Royal Ascot: Illinois faces seven rivals in Gold Cup

RTÉ News5 hours ago

Ante-post favourite Illinois headlines eight declarations for Thursday's Gold Cup at Royal Ascot.
His trainer Aidan O'Brien has won the two-and-a-half-mile highlight a record nine times, with four-time winner Yeats and dual hero Kyprios among those to fly the Ballydoyle flag.
Kyprios was expected to bid for a hat-trick this year before suffering a career-ending injury last month, leaving St Leger runner-up Illinois to step into the staying breach.
Godolphin will be double-handed with the John and Thady Gosden-trained Trawlerman, who is ridden by William Buick, and Saeed bin Suroor's Dubai Future who will be partnered by James McDonald.
The latter finished last behind Candelari in a Longchamp Group One last time out and that Francis-Henri Graffard-trained rival is among the leading candidates here as he bids to become the first French-trained winner of the race since Westerner 20 years ago.
Sagaro Stakes first and second, Yashin and Coltrane renew rivalries, while Sweet William is a second Gosden-trained contender and completes the line up along with Wonder Legend.
Trueshan and Jan Brueghel were the only two horses not declared.
Musidora Stakes second Serenity Prayer heads 11 contenders for the Ribblesdale Stakes, having seen the York form boosted when winner Whirl ran a close second in the Oaks at Epsom.
Paddy Twomey fields Catalina Delcarpio, Garden Of Eden is one of three for O'Brien, with the Gosden team also triple-handed with Life Is Beautiful, Go Go Boots and Understudy.
O'Brien's Charles Darwin leads 16 chasing Norfolk Stakes glory and French Derby third Detain drops down in class as one of 14 runners in the Hampton Court Stakes.
The King George V Stakes, the Britannia and the closing Buckingham Palace Stakes have all drawn full fields of 19, 30 and 29 respectively.

Colin Keane labels Field Of Gold ‘the best I've ridden' after securing first Royal Ascot win

Colin Keane enjoyed a first Royal Ascot Group One success – and a perfect start to his new job as Juddmonte's No 1 jockey – when Field Of Gold routed his opposition in Tuesday's St James's Palace Stakes. A long-anticipated competitive clash of Europe's three major 2,000 Guineas winners ultimately turned into a coronation, leaving no doubt about Field Of Gold's status as the season's outstanding three-year-old colt. Having nominated the John and Thady Gosden trained grey as probably the best horse he's ridden after riding him to Curragh Guineas glory, Keane's mind was made up for certain by the impressive solo-show. The 8-11 favourite was galloping all over his opposition from two furlongs out and ultimately ran out a three-and-a-half length winner from Aidan O'Brien's French Guineas winner Henri Matisse. Field Of Gold's Newmarket conqueror Ruling Court was almost four lengths back in third. READ MORE 'He's a special horse and I'm lucky enough to join this team and to have a horse like him early on is amazing. I've had nothing compared to this and it's very special. 'He just proved what he did at the Curragh wasn't a mistake and it's similar to revving a motorbike, when you ask him it's instant. 'Without a doubt he's the best I've ridden. The next best would be Siskin who was in the same colours, but this lad is a level above, he's very special,' Keane said. 'I wasn't nervous, but there was plenty of anticipation and it was a very good renewal of the race. It was three Guineas winners taking each other on, but he's won like a very good horse. 'I couldn't wish for a better start, but when you're riding for this operation and this is the quality of horse you get, these are the opportunities you get and it's very special but also a bit of relief,' he admitted. Field Of Gold followed in the hoofprints of his sire Kingman, who also followed up an unlucky Guineas defeat at Newmarket with victory at the Curragh and also in the St James's Palace. Kingman went on to land the 2014 Sussex and his son might try to do the same. 'If we hadn't gone to Ireland, I would have been keen to go to the Eclipse,' John Gosden said. 'When they win like that and make it look easy they do take a lot out of themselves. I don't want to be someone seen running him back quick in an Eclipse straight off the back of this.' Henri Matisse had to settle for second best, and it almost felt like his stable companion Gstaad was in the same boat despite winning the Coventry Stakes in some style. Ryan Moore riding Gstaad wins The Coventry Stakes on day one of Royal Ascot. Photograph:for Ascot Racecourse It was an 11th Coventry for Aidan O'Brien in the week's biggest juvenile prize, but Gstaad is clearly playing second-fiddle to a stable companion at home in Ballydoyle. The Coventry had been the intended target for Albert Einstein, another unbeaten colt forced to miss out due to a setback. Gstaad proved a super substitute and justified 7-2 favouritism in style to prove himself a hugely valuable prospect in his own right. But if O'Brien labelled him 'the makings of a very nice horse' he was again notably effusive about the colt back in Ballydoyle. 'He [Albert Einstein] felt like something we didn't have before. The first day he worked, he was probably the most different horse we have ever seen – he was so quick. We had horses as quick as he is but not as big as he is,' O'Brien commented. The second Irish winner of the day came in very different circumstances as Henry de Bromhead combined with Billy Lee to land the marathon Ascot Stakes with Ascending. Willie Mullins's hopes of landing a famous royal success with the 11-4 favourite Reaching High were dashed as Ryan Moore couldn't secure a run at a vital time and the horse faded to ninth. 'I am delighted. I wanted to go for the Copper Horse Stakes. I thought we had a great chance, but we didn't get in and someone put us in this race and we win – happy days,' said De Bromhead who was enjoying a first Royal Ascot success. Earlier, Australian jockey Mark Zahra enjoyed a perfect first Royal Ascot ride when landing a thrilling Queen Anne Stakes on the 14-1 shot Docklands. Zahra dropped his whip at the furlong pole when challenging off a pedestrian early pace but the previous year's Queen Anne runner-up got the nod in a desperate finish with the favourite Rosallion. American Affair provided veteran Scottish trainer Jim Goldie with a popular first Group One victory by landing the King Charles III Stakes, beating Frost At Dawn by a neck. James Doyle completed a double in the final two races as last year's Jersey hero Haatem struck again in the Wolferton and French Master doubled up for the Gosden team by landing the Copper Horse Handicap.

I have a feeling this 11-1 Royal Ascot tip is going to be much better than what we've seen recently

THERE are plenty of folk who think Los Angeles won't be fast enoug — I'm not one of them. Yes, people, it's Day Two of an already fabulous Royal Meeting. 1 Los Angeles isn't the prettiest but, under Ryan Moore, he always finds a way to win Credit: PA And the feature event at 4.20 — the Group 1 Prince of Wales's Stakes over a mile and a quarter — promises to be a humdinger. It's a third battle between last year's Irish Derby hero LOS ANGELES and Anmaat. They first met in last season's Qipco Champion Stakes, won by Anmaat with Los Angeles ninth. More recently they came eyeball to eyeball in last month's Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh. Los Angeles went for home two furlongs out but Anmaat looked sure to pick him up. In the end he got there but couldn't finish the job and went down by half a length. Maybe it was the lack of a recent run or maybe he got worried out of it by the gunslinger that Los Angeles is. I believe he will win again. Most read in Horse Racing He is a real iron horse and I'm sure master trainer Aidan O'Brien and ace jockey Ryan Moore will turn this into a real stamina test with pacemaker Continuous — the 2023 St Leger winner — in the field. This is a decent line-up, with the exciting French raider Map of Stars no mug and Ombudsman sure to make his presence felt after a fair comeback at Sandown and filly See The Fire — a 12-length winner of a Group 2 last time out — in there too. Yet Los Angeles and Moore are made for each other and I fancy them to grind this out. The Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes for two-year-old fillies gets us underway today. It's over five furlongs and Zelaina will be all the rage after looking so good at Nottingham first time. I'm happy to chance another who has won one race, and that's the Michael Bell-trained SPICY MARG (2.30), who goes in the Emma Banks colours of Lady Bowthorpe. Spicy Marg looked special on debut at Newmarket in a small field and, at 50,000 gns as a yearling, looks a very good buy. Next up is the Group 2 Queen's Vase for three-year-olds over a mile and six furlongs. None of these have ever gone so far before although CARMERS (3.05) has two wins at a mile and five. He looks the safest option for Paddy Twomey and Billy Lee. Out of a Sea The Stars mare, Carmers hacked up in Listed company last time at Navan and stayed on powerfully to win Ballinrobe too. This is tougher, but clearly he gets the trip and he's already proven he's got a bit of class. The 3.40 is another Group 2 in the Duke Of Cambridge for older female horses over a mile. Cinderella's Dream was scintillating at Newmarket and she's a very strong stayer at this trip — she could easily hack up. At the odds I'm going to throw a few quid each-way on former 1,000 Guineas heroine ELMALKA who has never quite gone on from that success but has run pretty consistently ever since. I get the feeling Roger Varian feels she is better than we have seen recently. It's pin time in the day's big betting race - the Royal Hunt Cup (5.00) over a mile. I've been flagging up Greek Order for a long time when he was 25-1 but the price has gone now. He's got a huge chance off 95 if fit and ready. That all said, I'm going to be very boring because I suspect MY CLOUD (5.00) is well ahead of the handicapper off 95 for Varian again and Silvestre De Sousa. The selection kept on well to win at Newbury last time off 90 and would have won more easily but for edging left in the closing stages. There will be plenty of punters cheering on the King's runner Rainbows Edge in the Kensington Palace but I prefer SERIALISE (5.35) for Jessica Harrington. The four-year-old has two really good runs to her name in two big-field mile handicaps — a third at Leopardstown and a second at the Curragh. The card finishes with the Windsor Castle Stakes for juvenile sprinters over five furlongs This is a minefield of a race so keep stakes small. I'm risking HAVANA HURRICANE (6.10) for Eve Johnson-Houghton. A slow start at Epsom last time didn't help and this drop back in trip will suit. Good luck . . . and Yeeehaaa!
