Mass shooting at Manhattan skyscraper leaves 5 dead, including gunman

Reuters2 days ago
NEW YORK, July 28 (Reuters) - A gunman armed with an assault-style rifle killed four people inside a Manhattan skyscraper that houses the headquarters of the NFL and offices of several major financial firms and then shot himself dead, New York City officials said on Monday.
One of the four victims slain in the gun violence was a 36-year-old New York Police Department officer who immigrated to the U.S. from Bangladesh. Mayor Eric Adams described the officer, who had been on the force for about 3 1/2 years, as a "true blue" hero.
Authorities offered few details about the three other victims killed by the suspect - two men and a woman. A third male was gravely wounded by the gunfire and was "fighting for his life" in a nearby hospital, the mayor said.
New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the gunman, identified as Shane Tamura, 27-year-old Las Vegas resident with a history of mental illness, had driven cross-country to New York in recent days.
The gunman was believed to have acted alone, and investigators had yet to determine a possible motive for the shooting, Tisch told reporters at a late-night news briefing.
"Pure evil came to the heart of our city and struck innocent people and one of our police officers who were protecting those people," Patrick Hendry, president of the Police Benevolent Association, said at the press conference.
The slain policeman, Didarul Islam, a father of two whose wife is pregnant with a third child, was working at the time as part of an NYPD program that allows its uniformed patrol officers to be assigned as security detail in commercial establishments.
The shooting spree in the evening rush hour began in the lobby of the Park Avenue tower in Midtown Manhattan, then shifted to the upper-story offices of a management company as the suspect took the elevator to the 33rd floor. The bloodshed came to an end when the gunman fatally shot himself in the chest, Tisch told reporters.
A photo of the suspect that CNN said was shared by police showing a gunman walking into the building carrying a rifle was published by a number of major news media outlets. Preliminary checks of the suspect's background did not show a significant criminal history, the report added, citing officials.
The skyscraper at 345 Park Avenue houses offices of a number of financial institutions, including Blackstone and KPMG, along with the headquarters of the National Football League.
A large police presence converged on the area around the tower, according to Reuters journalists near the scene.
'I just saw a lot of commotion and cops and people screaming,' said Russ McGee, a 31-year-old sports bettor who was working out in a gym adjacent to the skyscraper, told Reuters in an interview near the scene.
Kyle Marshall, 38, was working at a Morgan Stanley office in a nearby Park building when his mother texted him, alerting him to an active-shooter incident, and asked if he was OK. "Then she texted me the address, and I was, like, 'Oh my God. That's right next door to my building," he said.
Police kept Marshall and others inside that property on lockdown until after 8 p.m., he told Reuters. Marshall lives in the San Francisco area but comes to New York about once a month for work.
"It doesn't make me feel less safe to be in Manhattan," he said. "The police responded quickly."
The FBI said agents from its New York field office were also responding to provide support at the scene.

Beautiful young family shattered 'after dad forgot about five month-old baby in hot car'

A young family has been shattered by the death of their five-month-old baby boy after he was unintentionally left in a hot car. The father, 36-year-old Jeremy Hansen, was arrested and charged with negligent child abuse resulting in death after the tragedy. Police were called to the parking lot of Pacha Soap Co. in Nebraska on Monday about 5pm amid reports of an unresponsive child in a hot car. Fire and Rescue officers arrived on the scene and tried to revive the little boy. He was transferred to Mary Lanning Healthcare in Hastings, where he died. According to a preliminary investigation, his cause of death was extreme heat exposure. On Tuesday, Hansen was formally charged by the Adams County Attorney. He will appear in court for a hearing on Friday. Despite the arrest, the community has rallied behind the Hanson family, with more than 400 donors coming together to raise over $33,000 for them in their time of grief. Loved ones have also set up a meal train where they can lock in dates to provide the couple and their surviving three children a meal. Dinners for the next three months have been scheduled and divided amongst friends and family. Other loved ones have railed against prosecutors for laying charges against a grieving father. 'I'm so deeply saddened and disappointed to see the judgement that has been cast so easily,' one schoolmate of Hansen's wrote online. 'Imagine your greatest fear, your largest human moment …as a parent being put on display for everyone to judge, while simultaneously trying to even comprehend the events that led to your greatest loss. 'He doesn't deserve this. His family doesn't deserve this. No one deserves this. Like it's been said before… how about we lift them up in prayer instead of tearing them down.

12 California department of transport employees held rowdy retirement with stripper and booze during work hours, report

Multiple members of the California Department of Transportation face the sack following a boozy retirement party that allegedly involved a hired stripper whom employees threw money at. The party, first reported by KSBW, resulted in 10 Caltrans workers being served termination notices and another two being given suspension notices. The alleged incident was held at the department's Monterey facility and, according to an email sent to the station by an anonymous employee, 'involved open consumption of alcohol, the presence of a hired stripper.' The participating employees were 'on the clock and being paid with taxpayer dollars,' the email added, per KSBW, adding: 'The event was interrupted by another supervisor who arrived unexpectedly and witnessed the situation firsthand." "Everyone returned to work as if nothing had happened." According to the source, the employees had been throwing money at the stripper. The tip continued: 'Some supervisors were seen consuming alcohol and then driving away from the yard in official state-issued Caltrans vehicles while under the influence... a blatant violation of Caltrans policy, but also a criminal offense and serious liability.' The Independent has reached out to Caltrans for comment about the alleged incident and the employee's claims. In a statement to KSBW, a Caltrans spokesman confirmed that a party had taken place on July 10 and that the department was investigating the allegations. "Caltrans takes these allegations with the utmost seriousness and is unwavering in holding those involved accountable,' the spokesperson said. The Caltrans spokesman said 12 employees have been put on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of their cases. "The behavior described has absolutely no place in our department and stands in direct opposition to our values and ethical standards. We quickly launched an investigation and have taken immediate disciplinary action,' Caltrans said in a statement, per KSWB.

Judge dismisses lawsuit filed by Alec Baldwin for malicious prosecution in fatal 'Rust' set shooting

A New Mexico judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed by actor Alec Baldwin for malicious prosecution and civil rights violations in the 2021 fatal shooting of a cinematographer on the set of the Western movie ' Rust.' The judge in a ruling made public Wednesday dismissed the case without prejudice for lack of any significant action with the claim, which was filed in state district court earlier this year. Baldwin's attorneys will have 30 days to file a motion seeking reinstatement. Luke Nikas, Baldwin's lead attorney, told The Associated Press in an email that the dismissal amounted to a nonevent since his team has been waiting to prosecute the case. 'We have been in good-faith settlement discussions with the parties to the lawsuit and will be refiling promptly if those discussions are not promptly and favorably resolved,' he said. Defendants include special prosecutor Kari Morrissey and Santa Fe District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies, along with three investigators from the Santa Fe County sheriff's office and the county board of commissioners. A charge of involuntary manslaughter against Baldwin was dismissed at trial last year on allegations that police and prosecutors withheld evidence from the defense. The trial was upended by revelations that ammunition was brought into the Santa Fe County sheriff's office months earlier by a man who said it could be related to the killing of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. The allegations in Baldwin's tort claim include defamation, with his attorneys saying that prosecutors and investigators targeted the actor and coproducer for professional or political gain. Hutchins died shortly after being wounded during a rehearsal for the movie 'Rust' in October 2021 at a film-set ranch on the outskirts of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Baldwin was pointing a pistol at Hutchins when it discharged, killing Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza. Baldwin has said he pulled back the hammer — but not the trigger — and the revolver fired. The actor recently spoke to The Associated Press at San Diego's Comic-Con International, saying he couldn't believe what happened that day in court as the trial came to an abrupt end and that his life over the last year has been far better than the few years that preceded it. Still, Baldwin and other producers of 'Rust' are being sued in New Mexico state court by the parents and younger sister of Hutchins. Court records show a deposition for Baldwin in that case was put off in May and has yet to be rescheduled.
