Mebane Lowe's Foods stabbing suspect given $2.5 million bond in court
Dason Hodge is charged with attempted first-degree murder and faces up to 40 years in jail.
In the courtroom, there were several friends and family members. They didn't want to speak on camera but told FOX8 they were shocked.
One of the friend's wives didn't want to go to the grocery store alone this weekend after hearing the news that a man allegedly stabbed a stranger five times for no reason.
'This was extreme unprovoked violence,' the prosecutor said in court.
Plans for a Friday afternoon drink at the beer den in Lowes Foods in Mebane turned violent.
The victim had at least five stab wounds. There was a graphic description of the bloody scene inside the store, and the entire incident was caught on camera.
'Almost immediately after he had sat down, the defendant grabbed the victim from behind,' the prosecutor said in court.
The suspect is 24-year-old Dason Hodge. He has no prior record. On Monday in court, he only spoke when the judge asked if he wanted a court-appointed attorney.
Hodge lives only about five minutes from the Lowes Foods, and prosecutors fear that if he is out on bond, he could do it again in the busy shopping area.
'If he is out on bond, he can just walk now to any one of these other locations or a similarly located fast food restaurant or some that are in that same area and engage in the same conduct,' the prosecutor said.
People inside the store at the time rushed to help the victim and keep Hodge there until police arrived. Over the weekend, the victim had several surgeries, and his friends say he is still in the ICU but doing OK.
Some of his friends told FOX8 that they have had nightmares. It will be a tough road ahead, so they ask for prayers for the family.

One image shows her lovingly cradling her baby sister, Mia, while in another she is seen standing next to a family friend, reports the Mirror. A heartfelt tribute from her 'best mate', Cole, read: "RIP Casey you'll be missed so much. Can't believe you left us so early, you're flying with the angels now, fly high, love you lots my thunder buddie in the sky." Her aunt, Dani, expressed her sorrow, saying she missed her "so much" and that she would remain "Forever 13". Paula Mills wrote: "Fly high with the angels beautiful girl. I hope there's an amazing afterlife waiting for you where all your hopes and dreams come true." Another person wrote: "You've left a massive hole in the lives of all who had the pleasure of knowing you. Sweet dreams Casey, you'll be sadly missed xx." Casey-Louise attended Mossley Hollins High School in Tameside, with a statement released this week paying tribute to her as "bright, full of character, always full of life, and never afraid to be herself. "She was funny, sweet, had a smile that could brighten anyone's day and will be deeply missed by our school community", the statement continued. Students will receive support when lessons resume in September. A GoFundMe appeal has been launched to assist her family and contribute towards funeral expenses. In their most recent statement, DCI Stacey Atkinson, from West Yorkshire Police's Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said: "We are continuing to conduct a number of enquiries following the death of a 13-year-old girl following an incident at a flat on Sheepridge Road. "A post-mortem was not able to determine how she died and we continue to treat her death as unexplained at this time, pending more enquiries. "Those enquiries are complex and are likely to be lengthy as we work to fully understand the circumstances of the girl's death. Specially trained officers are supporting her family at this time." ‘Beloved' 18-year-old shot dead at house party, NM officials say. Man sentenced
A man has been sentenced to prison in connection to the 2022 shooting that left a 'beloved' 18-year-old dead, New Mexico officials said. In December 2022, now-21-year-old Jesse Parra showed up uninvited to an Albuquerque house party with Cruz Medina, Isaiah Espinosa and Jesse Barrios after learning about it on social media, according to an Aug. 19 Facebook post by the Bernalillo County District Attorney's Office. After they were asked to leave because they were taking photos with guns, they returned and began shooting, officials said. Parra drove the car during the shooting, 'maneuvering the vehicle so the two shooters could fire at the home and flee the scene,' officials said. An 18-year-old, later identified as Jada Gonzales, was fatally shot in the stomach, officials said. Gonzales had plans to attend Texas Christian University and was an 'exemplary student' who worked two jobs, a GoFundMe page to raise money for funeral expenses said. 'This is the greatest pain I've ever known and not one I'd wish any parent to ever feel,' the GoFundMe page said. Medina, then 16, was sentenced to 24 years in prison, officials said. Espinosa, 16 at the time and the one accused of firing the shot that killed Gonzales, was sentenced to 29 years in prison, prosecutors said. Barrios, then 18, 'recorded the crime on his phone and was taken into ICE custody,' prosecutors said. Husband killed trying to break up brawl on night out with wife, Texas family says
A Texas man was fatally stabbed while trying to break up a brawl during a night out with his wife, his family says. Officers responded to a call about a 'large disturbance between multiple individuals' in a parking lot on the city's northeast side at about 12:10 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, the News Braunfels Police Department said in a news release. A 52-year-old old man with stab wounds was taken to a hospital where he later died, police said. Mario Saldana and his wife were leaving El Flaco Event Center after a party when the fight broke out, his wife, Rosanna Perez, told KENS, adding that her husband stepped in despite not knowing any of the people involved. 'I told my husband, we needed to leave, let's go,' she told the station. 'Immediately he's like, 'No, let me go tell these people to calm down, they need to stop.' He was trying to deescalate the situation.' A man, later identified as 55-year-old David Saldana, killed Mario Saldana, according to police. 'He tried to separate people, and I guess they got angry,' Perez told KSAT. 'Next thing, he stabbed him. This was something that didn't need to happen.' There's no relation between Mario Saldana and David Saldana, the outlet reported. 'He stabbed him first in the chest, several times,' Perez told KENS. 'We tried to get away, and I guess that wasn't enough for him. He came and tackled him to the ground and stabbed him in the back.' Mario Saldana didn't have life insurance and was the 'sole provider' for his family so Perez could stay home to take care of her mother full time, according to a GoFundMe. 'Mario always had an optimistic attitude toward life and lived life to the fullest. He loved to joke around and lift people's spirits. And I know that he loved all of us dearly,' it read. David Saldana was arrested on a charge of murder, and his bond is set at $500,000, jail records show.
