This NC grocery store just announced 2 new locations in the Triangle
A North Carolina-based grocer will open two new locations in the Triangle. Lowes Foods, which is headquartered in Winston-Salem, is expanding to Wendell and Fuquay-Varina. This follows the closures of multiple Lowes Foods stores as part of the grocer's parent company's 'broader growth strategy to invest in new stores and remodel existing stores.' While the grocer has not announced anticipated opening dates for the new stores, it provided their locations. Wendell: The new store will be in the Wendell Commons development at the intersection of Wendell Falls Parkway and Eagle Rock Road. Barnett Properties is the developer behind the project, which will include 90,000 square feet when complete, Alan Maness, a vice president of development, told The News & Observer in an email. The Lowes Foods is expected to open in 2026, though the schedule has not been finalized, Maness said. Fuquay-Varina: The store will be in the mixed-use Academy Village development at Old Honeycutt Road and Purfoy Road. Shelly Johnson, the director of marketing for Academy Village developer MPV Properties, told The News & Observer in an email that the Lowes Foods building is expected to be delivered in the first quarter of 2027, pointing to a late 2027 store opening. Academy Village will feature 85,000 square feet of commercial space, 300 apartment units and 54 townhomes, with Proffitt Dixon overseeing the residential component. Nearby grocers include Harris Teeter and Aldi. Lowes Foods has more than a dozen stores in the Triangle, across Raleigh, Garner, Cary, Knightdale, Holly Springs, Apex, Clayton, Wake Forest, Chapel Hill and Pittsboro. The Holly Springs store at 112 Bass Lake Road is being remodeled and will reopen Thursday, June 26. 'Our remodeling efforts are focused on enriching the everyday shopping experience,' Tim Lowe, the president of Lowes Foods, said in a news release. 'We want guests to feel at home in our stores and to discover something new each time they visit. Whether it's through new store openings or reimagined spaces, we are committed to offering an engaging grocery destination that reflects the spirit of each community.' The grocer also announced that the Kj's Market in John's Island, South Carolina, will be converted into a Lowes Foods. The grocer has closed multiple North Carolina locations over the past year. Its store at 8201 Rowlock Way in northwest Raleigh shut down last year, along with a Lowes Foods location in Wilmington and a Kj's Market in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. Earlier this year, Lowes Foods closed its Cary store at 930 High House Road. The location at 6430 Tryon Road in Cary remains open. Have a question about your community you'd like answered? Good Samaritans honored for saving Mebane stabbing victim in Lowes Foods
MEBANE, N.C. (WGHP) — On March 7, Christina Forrest and her brother John Harden came to the Lowes Foods off Mebane Oaks Road with one objective. 'We just came with my mom to get some milk,' Harden said. To their surprise, they walked into the grocery store. They say they saw someone stab a man named Dave. The suspect was later identified as 24-year-old Dason Hodge. 'I quickly got my mom out of the store, and then I realized that I needed to go back into the store to see where my brother went,' Forrest said Without thinking twice, Harden jumped into action. 'I don't know what was going on in my mind. I just saw people running and screaming. Dave got taken down to the ground, and I figured he needed some help, so I just came back to help,' he said. Forrest ran inside the grocery store and helped her brother save Dave. 'Once the assailant was away from the victim, my brother started applying pressure. I quickly jumped in to apply pressure, too,' Forrest said. Harden, an ex-military air traffic controller, and Forrest, a registered nurse, used their skills to save Dave. 'My background is always protecting patients and people. My first instinct is going back to find my brother and making sure the victim is OK,' Harden said. One month later, their heroic efforts were recognized during Monday night's Mebane City Council meeting alongside Joshua Castleberry and Nai Mtoo Hooks read a letter from Dave's wife: 'We're unable to attend the meeting but wanted to say a heartfelt 'thank you' to the people that helped. My husband would not be here today without the courage of store patrons who bravely intervened in a horrifying situation.' It's a situation Forrest hopes never happens again but is glad to have been in the right place at the right time. Harden and Forrest hope to meet Dave in person at a later date. Additionally, an Alamance County judge handed down a bond of $2.5 million to Hodge, who is charged with attempted first-degree murder. A GoFundMe has been set up for the victim. Mebane Lowe's Foods stabbing suspect given $2.5 million bond in court
ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) — In court on Monday afternoon, an Alamance County judge handed down a bond of $2.5 million to the suspect in the stabbing that happened at a Mebane grocery store last week. Dason Hodge is charged with attempted first-degree murder and faces up to 40 years in jail. In the courtroom, there were several friends and family members. They didn't want to speak on camera but told FOX8 they were shocked. One of the friend's wives didn't want to go to the grocery store alone this weekend after hearing the news that a man allegedly stabbed a stranger five times for no reason. 'This was extreme unprovoked violence,' the prosecutor said in court. Plans for a Friday afternoon drink at the beer den in Lowes Foods in Mebane turned violent. The victim had at least five stab wounds. There was a graphic description of the bloody scene inside the store, and the entire incident was caught on camera. 'Almost immediately after he had sat down, the defendant grabbed the victim from behind,' the prosecutor said in court. The suspect is 24-year-old Dason Hodge. He has no prior record. On Monday in court, he only spoke when the judge asked if he wanted a court-appointed attorney. Hodge lives only about five minutes from the Lowes Foods, and prosecutors fear that if he is out on bond, he could do it again in the busy shopping area. 'If he is out on bond, he can just walk now to any one of these other locations or a similarly located fast food restaurant or some that are in that same area and engage in the same conduct,' the prosecutor said. People inside the store at the time rushed to help the victim and keep Hodge there until police arrived. Over the weekend, the victim had several surgeries, and his friends say he is still in the ICU but doing OK. Some of his friends told FOX8 that they have had nightmares. It will be a tough road ahead, so they ask for prayers for the family. A GoFundMe has been set up. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
