Masdar and Iberdrola power up $17.5bn clean energy alliance with UK and Germany offshore wind breakthroughs
The first milestone is their co-investment in the 1.4GW East Anglia THREE offshore wind farm in the UK —one of the decade's biggest offshore wind transactions.
The second is the full energisation of the 476MW Baltic Eagle wind farm in the German Baltic Sea, now supplying power to 475,000 homes and cutting carbon emissions by approximately 800,000 tonnes annually.
Signed in December 2023, the Masdar–Iberdrola partnership is among the largest bilateral clean energy alliances globally, aimed at tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030.
It includes offshore wind and green hydrogen projects with a combined value of €15bn ($17.5bn), targeting the UK, Germany, the US, and other key markets.
East Anglia THREE: A UK Masdar project
Under the agreement, Masdar and Iberdrola will each hold a 50 per cent stake in the East Anglia THREE wind farm, located off the Suffolk coast. When operational in Q4 2026, it will be among the world's two largest offshore wind farms and will generate enough electricity to power 1.3 million British homes.
A key financial milestone was reached on July 9 when project financing of £3.5bn ($4.7bn) was secured through 24 international banks.
The oversubscribed loan, one of the largest of its kind, will cover a substantial portion of the project's total cost without affecting the partners' consolidated debt.
The project has secured long-term revenue certainty through a 15-year CPI-linked Contract for Difference (CfD) awarded by the UK Government and a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Amazon, signed in 2024.
More than 2,300 construction jobs will be created, with 100 permanent roles once operational.
Baltic Eagle: Energised and Operational in Germany
The second major milestone in the partnership is the full energisation of the 476MW Baltic Eagle wind farm in Germany.
This marks Masdar's first project in Germany and with Iberdrola, and also represents its largest euro-denominated financing to date.
Baltic Eagle will supply green energy to 475,000 households, helping Germany accelerate toward its clean energy targets.
Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of Masdar, said: 'Masdar and Iberdrola are continuing to forge one of the largest and most powerful strategic clean energy partnerships to accelerate capacity growth in Europe and worldwide.
'Offshore wind will play a crucial role in the global energy transformation, and landmark developments like Baltic Eagle and East Anglia THREE are significant advances towards clean energy targets in major European nations.
'With demand surging due to exponential AI growth and the rise of emerging markets, projects such as these have never been more critical.'
Ignacio Galán, Iberdrola's Executive Chairman, said: 'Joining forces with Masdar in the East Anglia THREE offshore windfarm will allow Iberdrola to accelerate our strategic focus on the UK, where we are investing £24bn ($32.6bn) to 2028 in transmission and distribution networks and in renewable energy, contributing to the delivery of the UK Government's ambitious electrification plans.'
Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, Chief Executive Officer of Masdar, said: 'This landmark partnership underscores our commitment to driving Europe's energy transformation and advancing global climate goals.'

Shell's profit drops by almost a third but easily beats expectations
LONDON - Shell's second-quarter adjusted earnings, its definition of net profit, tumbled by almost a third on Thursday, dragged down by a drop in oil prices, but still easily beat analysts' forecasts. The oil major said it would maintain the pace of its share buyback programme at $3.5 billion over the next three months, the 15th consecutive quarter of at least $3 billion. Shell has, meanwhile, achieved $3.9 billion in cost cuts compared with 2022, part of a cost-cutting programme aimed at saving between $5 billion and $7 billion by the end of 2028. It recorded cash flow from operations of $11.9 billion in the quarter, down from $13.5 billion a year ago. Together with $2.1 billion in dividends, that brings shareholder distributions to 46% of operating cashflow, within its 40% to 50% guided range. Shell's adjusted earnings reached $4.264 billion in the second quarter, smashing the $3.74 billion average in an analyst poll provided by the company but down 32% from a year ago. Global benchmark Brent crude prices averaged around $67 a barrel during the April-to-June quarter, compared with $75 a barrel in the first quarter and $85 a year earlier. Crude oil prices fell in the quarter as OPEC+, made up of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies such as Russia, began unwinding self-imposed production cuts aimed at supporting the market. Their most recent decision calls for an oil output increase of 548,000 barrels per day in August. Shell had guided in a trading update that it expected earnings to be hit by weaker trading in its integrated gas division and losses at its chemicals and products operations after an outage at its U.S. Monaca polymer plant.

Egypt partners with Italian academy to launch applied technology schools for electricity sector
Egypt has signed a cooperation protocol with Italy's Nova Technology della Vita Academy to establish and develop five applied technology schools focused on the electricity sector, the prime minister's office said in a statement. Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly witnessed the signing ceremony on Wednesday in the city of New Alamein. The agreement is between the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, the Ministry of Education and Technical Education, and the Italian academy. The schools, which will apply international quality standards in the fields of electricity production, transmission, and distribution, are set to begin operating in the 2025/2026 academic year. Madbouly said the agreement enhances the state's plans to develop its technical education and vocational training systems to produce graduates qualified to meet the needs of both local and international labour markets, particularly in the priority sector of electricity and renewable energy. Education Minister Mohamed Abdel Latif stated that the ministry is implementing a national strategy to develop technical education by updating curricula in consultation with the labour market. He said the ministry aims to expand the number of applied technology schools and introduce new practical specialisations to boost Egyptian industry. 'This cooperation represents a serious step towards building a new generation of qualified technicians capable of contributing effectively to building the national economy,' Abdel Latif said. Electricity Minister Mahmoud Essmat added that the development of a smart grid and the expansion of renewable energy require a workforce with specific skills. He said this protocol aims to prepare qualified technical cadres with the skills and standards required globally to keep pace with developments in the sector. According to the protocol, the schools will aim to graduate technicians qualified to work in electricity generation, transmission, distribution, and new and renewable energy. The study period will be three to five years, and successful graduates will receive a certificate of completion of secondary education in applied technology, a certificate of experience from the Ministry of Electricity, and a certificate from the Italian academy. The protocol aims to improve the quality of technical education outputs, address unemployment by creating real job opportunities for graduates, and support economic development by empowering Egyptian youth with modern skills.
