Govt to carry out surprise checks on 13MP projects
Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said the Policy Implementation Monitoring System (PPD), mentioned by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the 13MP tabling on Aug 1, will be jointly managed by the Finance and Economy Ministries.
"We have scheduled reporting, twice a year if I'm not mistaken.
"This time, we will ensure everything proceeds as planned since it spans until 2030.
"I will personally carry out regular monitoring, surprise checks and project site visits," he told reporters after flagging off the 20th Premier Public Service Assembly (MAPPA XX) Run at Dataran Putrajaya this morning.
Also present was Public Service Department director-general Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz.
During the 13MP tabling in the Dewan Rakyat, the prime minister said monitoring mechanisms would be strengthened through the PPD system, while the 13MP governance structure would be implemented in stages up to Cabinet reporting.
Shamsul Azri also urged civil servants to ensure approved projects are promptly executed.
He acknowledged that every project has its own timeline, but warned delays would frustrate the public who are meant to benefit.
"Our purpose is to serve the people. We are supposed to make them happy.
"So we must carry out development swiftly, without delay and free of bureaucracy," he said.
Major 13MP projects include the construction and upgrading of 2,800km of rural roads in Sarawak, Perak and Pahang; a road-to-rail cargo initiative to reduce road accidents; infrastructure projects to strengthen cross-border connectivity and the economy; upgrading of Bukit Kayu Hitam and Rantau Panjang Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) complexes and Sabah and Sarawak Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQs); and the construction of one million affordable homes by the federal and state governments and private developers between 2026 and 2035.

MCMC to record Muhyiddin's statement over RON95 subsidy claim

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission says it has contacted former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin to record his statement in its probe into a claim on the RON95 subsidy. In a statement MCMC said that Muhyiddin would be questioned as a witness. 'The focus of the probe is to confirm the context of the content that was uploaded. 'The probe does not include any claims or allegations levelled against him.' MCMC also said it would be contacting the relevant individuals to complete its probe. Yesterday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim ordered MCMC to look into his claim that Muhyiddin had defended the distribution of government subsidies to foreigners. In a statement, the Prime Minister's Office said it acknowledged the Perikatan Nasional chairman's denial of ever making such a statement involving targeted RON95 petrol subsidy. On Tuesday, Sinar Harian quoted Anwar as saying that Muhyiddin, who is also the Bersatu president, had questioned the government for burdening foreigners when they have also made significant contributions to the country. Anwar said the government had decided on targeted subsidies for electricity and RON95 petrol so that it could continue helping Malaysians while reducing the nation's fiscal deficit. Muhyiddin later denied having made such a statement and urged Anwar to furnish proof of his claim. The former prime minister said Anwar's claim was slanderous and that his stand from the beginning was that government subsidies should be for Malaysians, not foreigners.

UTM AI faculty receives over 60 international applications for 2nd cohort
JOHOR BARU: Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Faculty of Artificial Intelligence (FAI), the first of its kind in the country, continues to attract international students with over 60 applications received for the second cohort in October. The faculty's dean Prof Dr Mohd Naz'ri Mahrin said the number involved international candidates who applied directly to UTM without going through the University Admissions Unit (UPU). "Our first cohort currently consists of 114 students, including 14 international students from China, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and the Middle East. For the October cohort, over 60 international student applications are already on the list, but not yet finalised," he told Bernama recently. He said the encouraging response was driven by UTM's global reputation, which is currently ranked 153rd in the QS World University Rankings, as well as international recognition of its academic programmes offered. In addition, UTM's position in the top 100 in the QS subject ranking for Data Science and AI is also among the factors contributing to the confidence of applicants in pursuing their studies with FAI UTM. "For example, international students choose UTM because our certificates are recognised and enables them to continue their studies or work in other countries such as Canada, Australia and the United States. "Moreover, Malaysia is also more strategic and the cost of living is lower than countries like Singapore," he said. He said the Bachelor of Artificial Intelligence with Honours programme at FAI UTM is offered for three years, with three semesters per year, and includes four main branches, namely Robotics & Automation, Intelligence Informatics and Creative AI. He said that the faculty is also supported by more than 60 lecturers specialised in the field of AI in addition to 40 experts from the field of Engineering, bringing the total academic and support staff to 150 at present. "This faculty received an initial allocation of RM20 million. "Apart from training experts in the field of AI, we are also responsible for helping other public universities develop their own AI programmes or faculty," he said. UTM's AI Faculty was launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on May 10, 2024, which among other things aims to train AI talent with knowledge, skills, ethics, and competencies in the field of AI with a focus on attracting domestic and foreign investors while strengthening the local industry. — Bernama
