Pratitee keen to make a mark

Time of India07-07-2025
Bengaluru: India has witnessed a significant rise in chess over the past few years. D. Gukesh and R. Praggnanandhaa have emerged as the top representatives of this trend, and the performance across various age categories is promising.
Among those making their mark is Bengaluru's Pratitee Bordoloi, who is eager to follow in their footsteps.
The 12-year-old recently won a gold medal in the U-12 category at the FIDE World Cup in Batumi, Georgia. She has an impressive collection of medals, including two international titles from last year, along with silver medals in her budding career. It's quite an achievement for someone who took up the sport four years ago.
Interestingly, her mother, Pranti Dutta Bordoloi, introduced her to chess, believing that Pratitee's strong mathematical skills could translate well into the game.
"My mother noticed that I was good at math calculations. That's when she suggested I try chess, since it also involves a lot of calculation. I'm glad that I did," said Pratitee, who returned to the city late Friday after her victory in Georgia. Currently coached by GM Pravin Thipsay, Pratitee started participating in state competitions in the U-9 category, where she found success.

Her accomplishments at the national level helped her family realise her potential. However, balancing chess and academics has not been easy for her. As fan of Magnus Carlsen, she often misses classes while traveling for competitions, but she makes sure to get class notes from her friends. While the seventh-grade student at Shishya BEML Public School is focused on her upcoming term examinations, which begin on July 18, her next major competition will be the World Cadet Championship in Kazakhstan this September.
Pratitee trains for an average of four hours a day, increasing to eight hours as competitions approach. "After my exams, I will be able to concentrate on my training," said Pratitee, revealing her aspirations. "I would love to win the Women's World Championship in the future."

Gautam Gambhir vs The Oval curator: Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak reveals 'silly' reason behind heated conversation

Gautam Gambhir had heated argument with the Oval's chief curator. (Screengrab) in Manchester: India's head coach Gautam Gambhir was involved in a verbal altercation with The Oval's pitch curator Lee Fortis during India's optional training session on Tuesday, ahead of the final Test match against England. The incident occurred when Indian bowlers were marking their run-up areas in the nets, leading to a public confrontation between the two. The situation escalated quickly before India's batting coach Sitanshu Kotak stepped in to diffuse the tension by pulling Fortis away, while Gambhir continued to express his displeasure from a distance. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Team India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak revealed the reason behind the heated argument. Poll Do you think Gautam Gambhir's reaction to the pitch curator was justified? Yes, he had valid concerns. No, he overreacted. "When we were looking at pitch, they asked us to stand 2.5m away. We were wearing joggers. It was very odd. Looking at wicket with rubber spike, nothing wrong. We see ground is not damaged. Its a pitch, not antique,' he told reporters. "Curator yelled at support staff when they were getting ice box. Gambhir objected at that. The way he spoke irked Gambhir. Everyone knows curator at The Oval is not the easiest person to deal with," he told reporters. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Japanese hair growth method Hair's Rich Learn More Undo IND vs ENG: Gautam Gambhir loses cool during heated exchange with ground staff at The Oval ahead of 5th Test The batting coach also clarified that India is not going to lodge any official complaint against the curator. The Oval Curator Lee Fortis presented his side of the story and has called India coach "bit touchy." "You saw what he was like this morning. He's a bit touchy!," he told reporters. "There's no side of the story. You'll have to ask him that," he added. Fortis evaded multiple attempts at providing facts of what transpired between him and Gambhir. "I'm okay we've have got nothing to hide here," he said. IND vs ENG: The Oval curator breaks silence on Gautam Gambhir's outburst ahead of 5th Test Tensions have simmered throughout the series, spilling over on multiple occasions. It began at Lord's, where Shubman Gill visibly expressed his displeasure at England openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett arriving nearly 90 seconds late for their second innings. The drama peaked in Manchester, where England, sensing an inevitable draw, offered to end play early. However, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar declined, both approaching personal milestones. Their decision didn't sit well with Ben Stokes and his teammates, triggering a verbal spat on the field. The fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy will start from Thursday. Tom Latham will remain with the squad and is likely to return for the second Test starting August 7. Santner is also New Zealand's white-ball captain and has played 30 Tests for the Blackcaps. He will assume the role fresh off a T20I Tri-Series victory in Harare where New Zealand remained undefeated throughout the five-match series. Poll Will Tom Latham's absence impact New Zealand's performance in the first Test? Yes, significantly Yes, but not too much No, they will manage fine "It's hugely disappointing for Tom to be missing the first Test, as captain but also as an integral part of the team,' New Zealand head coach Rob Walter said. 'It's never great when you lose your captain, who's a world-class opening batter and a great team man, but that said we're going to work really hard to have him available for the second Test. "We'll continue to assess and see whether a replacement player is necessary, but at this stage we are hopeful that he'll recover in time.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brain tumor has left my son feeling miserable; please help! "Whilst the format is different, he certainly has the respect of the players and will be supported by some highly experienced Test cricketers, so I trust that he's going to do a great job.' Washington Sundar's coach M Senthilnathan on 101* vs England - 'Very emotional, it will be remembered for long time'

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - JULY 27: India batsman Washington Sundar celebrates his century during day five of the 4th Test Match between England and India at Emirates Old Trafford on July 27, 2025 in Manchester, England. (Photo by) Ahmedabad: All-rounder Washington Sundar scored his maiden century in international cricket during Team India's fourth Test against England, helping the visitors remain alive in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Washington Sundar (101* off 206 balls) stitched an unbeaten 203-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja (107* off 185 balls. The hosts were in the driver's seat after reducing India to 0/2 in the first over of their second innings, and were all set to take a 3-1 lead in the series. However, an 188-run partnership between KL Rahul (90) and Shubman Gill (103), followed by Washington and Jadeja's heroics helped the Indian team pull off nothing short of a miracle. "I feel highly emotional because this is Washington's maiden international hundred and came at a time when it really mattered. This knock will be remembered for a long time because he held his own against the English bowlers, denying them a triumph in a dominant position. Washington came up the order following Rishabh Pant's injury and showed initiative, helping India save the Test, which is equal to a win considering the tough circumstances. A maiden international century after showcasing such character and desire to fight is certainly sweeter than achieving the same in easier circumstances, and the team management will certainly hold him in higher regard," said Washington Sundar's childhood coach M. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Senthilnathan in an exclusive interaction with Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! The all-rounder has scored 205 runs in three matches and has picked up seven wickets. "Washington Sundar missed out on a ton earlier in 2021 when he remained unbeaten on 96 in the fourth Test against England which was played in Ahmedabad. It took some time for him to get back and score a ton but I am happy that he has managed to reach the milestone. Washington Sundar is showing the world that he can be a very useful cricketer across departments, as evident from his run tally in the ongoing series," he added. IND vs ENG: Gautam Gambhir loses cool during heated exchange with ground staff at The Oval ahead of 5th Test The Tamil Nadu all-rounder had to return back early during the Indian team's earlier tours of England, suffering unfortunate and unexpected injuries. These setbacks demotivated the all-rounder, testing his character. "He was really down mentally due to unfortunate injuries in his ankle and finger one or two days before a match. Washington asked me, 'What should I do?'. I said, 'Nothing. Just work hard'. Those were the only instances where he would feel low. Even during the current tour, the only advice I gave Washington was to stay fit due to the unfortunate injuries previously while playing football or bowling," said the cricketer's coach. Poll What do you think about Washington Sundar's maiden century under pressure? A remarkable achievement Expected from a player of his caliber Just a lucky innings More of a team effort Two of the biggest factors behind Washington Sundar's success have been his patience and work ethic, especially considering the limited opportunities earlier due to the presence of Ravichandran Ashwin. "I told him to hang in there. Washington Sundar has never been lazy which is a big quality of his. He will be on the ground even after an early morning flight which showcases his commitment. Washington Sundar had to wait for a long time, nearly three to four years but he had the patience to keep performing and stay right behind Ashwin. You can never see his aggression outside, he is very subtle but inside he is a very strong person with very high self-confidence levels," stated Senthilnathan.
