Gautam Gambhir vs The Oval curator: Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak reveals 'silly' reason behind heated conversation
TimesofIndia.com in Manchester:
India's head coach
Gautam Gambhir
was involved in a verbal altercation with The Oval's pitch curator Lee Fortis during India's optional training session on Tuesday, ahead of the final Test match against England.
The incident occurred when Indian bowlers were marking their run-up areas in the nets, leading to a public confrontation between the two.
The situation escalated quickly before India's batting coach Sitanshu Kotak stepped in to diffuse the tension by pulling Fortis away, while Gambhir continued to express his displeasure from a distance.

Poll
Do you think Gautam Gambhir's reaction to the pitch curator was justified?
Yes, he had valid concerns.
No, he overreacted.
"When we were looking at pitch, they asked us to stand 2.5m away. We were wearing joggers. It was very odd. Looking at wicket with rubber spike, nothing wrong. We see ground is not damaged. Its a pitch, not antique,' he told reporters.
"Curator yelled at support staff when they were getting ice box. Gambhir objected at that. The way he spoke irked Gambhir. Everyone knows curator at The Oval is not the easiest person to deal with," he told reporters.

IND vs ENG: The Oval curator breaks silence on Gautam Gambhir's outburst ahead of 5th Test
Tensions have simmered throughout the series, spilling over on multiple occasions. It began at Lord's, where Shubman Gill visibly expressed his displeasure at England openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett arriving nearly 90 seconds late for their second innings.
The drama peaked in Manchester, where England, sensing an inevitable draw, offered to end play early. However,
Ravindra Jadeja
and Washington Sundar declined, both approaching personal milestones. Their decision didn't sit well with Ben Stokes and his teammates, triggering a verbal spat on the field.

England's Huge Advantage vs India Even Before 1st Ball Is Bowled On Final Day Of 5th Test
What will be the final result of the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy? The final day of the five-match series is here and yet we don't know the answer. At the start of the fourth day of the fifth Test, it seemed like India had the upper-hand with England chasing a huge target of 374. But Joe Root and Harry Brook 's centuries almost ruined India's day, before Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj dented the hosts. England ended the day on 339/6, still needing 35 runs to win. India need 3 wickets (4 if the injured Chris Woakes bats). Ahead of the day, England are likely to use the heavy roller which flattens and makes the surface compact, potentially making it easier for the batters. If the batting side requests, it can be used for a maximum of seven minutes before the start of play. With England needing only 35 runs, using the heavy roller might help their batters counter the effects of an uneven pitch. India need to strike fast if they are to make a match out of the final day. If the heavy roller does impact the pitch a lot, it will be all over for Shubman Gill and Co. Jamie Overton (0*) and Jamie Smith (2*) were unbeaten when rain forced early stumps. Former Indian seamer Varun Aaron believes Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna delivered high-intensity overs, resulting in key wickets in the third session of the fifth Test on Day 4. Aaron felt Siraj was unlucky, bowling very well but not getting LBW calls. Siraj and Prasidh bowled a fiery spell post Tea, however Siraj didn't took any wicket in the final session but was bowling on tight length, while Prasidh cleaned up Jacob Bethell for five followed by centurion Joe Root for 105 in his following over. "Siraj and Prasidh bowled five high-intensity overs each after tea, and that effort resulted in two crucial wickets. Siraj was quite unlucky, as he has been throughout the day--he bowled unbelievably well. So many of his deliveries hit the pad, but he just didn't get the LBW calls," JioHotstar expert Varun Aaron said. Aaron felt England find themselves in a tough spot and praised Indian skipper Shuman Gill for his smart captaincy post tea, which didn't allow easy singles to the visitors. "England now find themselves in a tough spot, and I genuinely feel this break is going to do India a world of good. The bowlers get to rest, stretch, have a massage, and get some treatment from the physios. They can come back fresh and give it everything again. This post-tea session has been brilliant--accurate bowling, smart captaincy by Shubman Gill, who didn't allow easy singles, and two very important wickets," he added.

Archery Association of India announces first edition of Archery League
The Archery Association of India (AAI) on Monday (August 4, 2025) announced the first-of-its-kind Archery League, which will see men and women recurve and compound archers from across the world competing in a franchise-styled tournament. The inaugural edition of the league is expected to take place over a 11-day period in October this year at the Yamuna Sports Complex in Delhi. If Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli were playing, I think the outcome would have been different: David Lloyd
Going into the final day of the series, India has an opportunity to level the series, or if England manages to get the remaining runs, they will win the series. This is the first big Test for this young Indian side after the retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Former England cricketer David Lloyd opined that if there were the experience of those two in the side, the outcomes might have been different. 'India have been very impressive over the series, but they haven't won the main moments. If Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli were playing, I think the outcome would have been different. Certain players sniff out the main moments and are proactive rather than reactive. Ben Stokes is fabulous at that. India will be scratching their heads thinking how on earth they could lose this 3-1,' Lloyd wrote in his column. Lloyd also said that the rain break came at the right time for England, who lost three wickets in quick succession. 'The break came at the right time for England because India were throwing the kitchen sink at it, and all of a sudden, the scoreboard stopped moving. India needs to be right on it because the ball is swinging. And just to add to the drama, the new ball is due in a few overs. Will India take it? What drama, what theatre,' said Lloyd. With both teams could win the final game from this stage, former India bowler Varun Aaron believes that India are now in a position to win Oval Test. 'Even a 10–15 minute extra break can do wonders for a team. It (the break on Sunday due to rain) gave the players time to regroup in the dressing room, talk strategy, and recover physically. I'm sure the message in the room was clear—'We've worked too hard over the past 60 days to let this game slip.' This team has travelled all the way from India and dominated large parts of the series. A series draw is the least they deserve. A loss from this position would really hurt. But after that spirited bowling spell post-tea, I genuinely believe India are now in a position to win this match,' Aaron said on JioHotstar.
