Cape visitors set to thrill at Aldo Scribante Raceway
An exciting change to this weekend's third round of the Algoa Motorsport Club's Regional championship is the addition of the Cape Town-based Kaltron Formula Supercars that are making the trip to Aldo Scribante Raceway.
The cars that run a 2-litre Opel Motor were all built by the late Owen Ashley and celebrate their 30th year of existence next year. They will take part in three races, with the first two being for championship points and the third being a fun race where they will be joined by local Supercar racers Peter Schultz and Tom Hugo.
A strong field of 20 modified saloons will be in action and sees legendary racer Syd Lippstreu with his immaculate Toyota Celica moving from the Retro Classic class and joining the modified saloons for the first time.
The battle up front should once again be between the class B cars of Ian Riddle in his VW SuperPolo and Ian Oberholzer in his Volvo 850 station wagon as well as relative newcomer Elan Buchman in a VW SuperPolo.
In the Wide Horizon Advance Training-sponsored Coastal Challenge for historics, classics and retro classics is Brent Watts, who is making a welcome return to circuit racing at Aldo Scribante Raceway in his Nissan Skyline and is set to give the similar Skylines of usual frontrunners Rane Berry and Tom Hugo a run for their money.
East London visitor Neil Stephen returns with the only Opel Manta in the country that is racing and joins a whole fleet of classic Ford Escorts, Anglias and Capris as well as a classic VW Beetle with Henry Adams behind the wheel. Included in the mix are the street and fine cars with Barry Buchman in his Mercedes A45S and Ayrton Pilz in a Renault Clio 3 RS.
Dylan Grobler returns to action after a short break in the open motorcycle class on his new 600cc Yamaha R6 and will be up against fellow 600cc competitors Ethan Diener, Ruan van Zyl and Ashton Heideman in what promises to be an epic battle on track.
Kiera Potgieter is also back after taking a nasty tumble at the last round of the championship during qualifying and joins fellow girl racers Emma Diener and Kirsty Oberholzer in the CBR 150/250 motorcycle class where they will be up against Craig Benn, Dylan Grobler, Ruan van Zyl, Rob de Vos and Anthony Lippstreu
Racing is set to start at 10.15am tomorrow and there will be three heats per class including the Ingco 45-Minute race that ends off the day and is set to start at about 4.15pm.

Elite Eastern Cape runners eye top spots in Comrades
Sidziya is competing in his back-to-back run, buoyed by the silver medal he got in his debut in 2024, when he finished the race in 7:16:43. Komani Runners Club's Sikelela Tulelo, who has two Bill Rowan medals (bronze), will start his silver medal attempt from wave B, group 1. 'I believe in myself. I know my body, I know what it wants. 'Over-training is not good because it can hurt you. I listen to my body and train accordingly,' Tulelo said. For Nedbank Running Club's Lulamile Danile, who will also run from wave A, group 1, this will be Comrades number eight and he hopes to improve his time from the 6:17:40 he ran last year that earned him a fifth silver medal, adding to his two Bill Rowan medals. 'I used my personal best marathon time to qualify for the elite field. It has been my dream to run in the elite field. I got in for the first time because of the qualifying time I ran,' Danile said. He said he had been struggling to break into a sub-six-hour time at the Comrades. 'Running a 2:28 time in this marathon for the Comrades qualifying race made me ponder the meaning of this ahead of Sunday. 'I think it means I will be able to run sub-six hours. My best time for comrades is 6:13, so I think this will get me there,' Danile said. New Zealand cricket names SA's Rob Walter as new coach in all formats
South African Rob Walter was appointed New Zealand coach in all formats on Friday in the wake of Gary Stead's decision to stand down after seven years in charge. Stead announced on Wednesday he would leave the job of test coach at the end of the month, having relinquished the short format roles in April. Walter, 49, was most recently coach of SA's one-day international and Twenty20 teams but knows New Zealand cricket well after stints in charge of provincial teams and his time overseeing a Black Caps "A" tour of India in 2022. "The Black Caps have been a successful and highly-regarded team on the world scene for some time and it's a real privilege to be given the chance to add to that," Walter said in a New Zealand Cricket (NZC) statement. "It's an amazing opportunity to work with such a talented group of players and support staff through time in which so many global events, ands massive bilateral series, will be contested." Walter, who led SA to the semi-finals of the 2023 World Cup and final of last year's Twenty20 World Cup, is contracted through to the end of the 2028 World Cup, which New Zealand is co-hosting with Australia. "Rob is a world-class coach with an outstanding pedigree," said NZC CEO Scott Weenink. "His success in New Zealand's domestic game, combined with his recent achievements on the global stage with SA, makes him the ideal candidate to lead the Black Caps."
