Early B on song at Aldo Scribante Raceway
Hoping to at least finish on the podium at his first home race at Aldo Scribante Raceway, rap-singer Earl Swartz (Early B) went one better with two second places and a maiden win to end the day on the top step of the podium after three exhilarating heats during round five of the Algoa Motorsport Club Regional Championship on Saturday. It was a busy day for Swartz, who spent many hours engaging with the huge legion of fans who had come out to support him. 'The first thing I need to say is thank you to Liqui Moly and the team,' he said. 'The help from everyone and the camaraderie in Super Vee's are the best thing you can experience, where everyone helps everyone. 'I was lucky enough to bring my dad and a few kids from the neighbourhood to watch today, which was super special, and it was a great experience for them.' Another local hero who enjoyed a great day on his home circuit was Joshua Moore, who took his first overall win in the VW Rookie Cup Interprovincial Championship after a hard-fought battle in all three heats. With two second-place finishes and a win in the last heat, Moore now moves into the lead of the championship with two rounds to go. With the cars all identically matched, Moore knew he had to do something special in the third heat if he was to get the win. Starting from the second row of the grid, he pulled off a spectacular overtaking move in the first corner, outbraking the rest of the field. He hugged the apex to get his nose in front and somehow managed to hold it steady to emerge as the leader as they exited turn two and then fought off the pressure from the rest of the pack as they chased him to the line with the top six cars all finishing within seconds of each other. To round off the day of maiden wins, Tiann Coetzer put in a stunning performance in his Opel Tigra to win the odified saloon class to upstage the ever-consistent Deon Slabbert in his immaculately prepared VW Polo. Slabbert did, however, come back strongly to win the Bronscor Ingco 45-minute endurance race by 17 seconds, with Timothy Ball second. Rane Berry was back to his best in his Nissan Skyline and though pushed hard by Angelique Griffin in race one, cruised to overall victory in the Wide Horizon Advance Training Coastal Challenge for historic, classic and retro cars. From rapping to racing, Early B heads to Aldo Scribante
Home-grown rapping sensation Earl Swartz, or Early B to his thousands of fans, will be in action at Aldo Scribante Raceway for the first time this weekend when the Algoa Motorsport Club host the fifth round of their regional and club championship. Swartz, now enjoying his second season of circuit racing, will be behind the wheel of a Liqui Moly-backed Forza Super Vee single seater. 'This will be my first time racing on the full track at Scribante, so I'm super excited. I have done some drag racing here before, so at least I know my way down the main straight,' he said. 'I feel way more comfortable in the car now as we have sorted out all of the little gremlins on the car, which has resulted in me qualifying in the top three at the last three race meetings, with a fourth place being my best finish so far. 'Maybe the PE wind will give me the extra edge to get me onto my first podium finish. 'Though the goal would be to get a good result, my main objective is just to finish all three races and have fun on the track, as I am a huge car lover. 'I would like to thank Liqui Moly for making it possible for me to race and would also like to wish all of the racers across all of the classes the very best of luck for the weekend.' This weekend's race day has been dubbed The Tiny Marriner Memorial Race Day in memory of local motorcycle legend Tiny Marriner, who recently passed away at the age of 86. Marriner's racing journey started in 1957, and his talents took him across the globe to many of the famous racetracks, including the Isle of Man TT, where he proudly represented SA, earning respect from riders from all parts of the world. Always a fierce competitor, he remained a true gentleman who inspired generations of racers with his humility, passion, knowledge and his relentless passion for speed and excellence. Motorsport lovers are in for a treat as the Super Vee single-seaters are a National Challenge class and adding to the bumper-filled programme is the VW Rookie Cup Inter-Provincial Challenge Series that will also be in action, with local star Joshua Moore now just one point off the lead in the championship after three rounds. Local classes that will be in action are the EP Modified Saloons that will have 27 cars lining up at the start, the Wide Horizon Coastal Challenge for Historic, Classic and Retro Cars, Street & Fine Cars, as well as open motorcycles. The race day will end in the evening with the regular Bronscor Ingco-sponsored 45-minute Endurance Race. Qualifying for all classes will get under way at 8am on Saturday, with racing scheduled to start at 10am. Tickets to the event are available at the gate at a cost of R70 for adults. Lotus Challenge to add spice to Scribante Race Day
The Lotus Challenge Racing SA Series, based in Gauteng, will have their second away race of the season when they join Algoa Motorsport Club at Aldo Scribante Raceway for their regional and club championship event this weekend. After already having had three rounds of their series at Redstar Raceway near Delmas, one at Zwartkops near Pretoria and one a Dezzi Raceway near Port Shepstone in KZN, round six will see them in action at Scribante. The 2.48km circuit is ideally situated for the lightweight Lotus cars with its tight technical stretches that ensure that the racing is close among the 15-strong field that is divided into two different classes, class B and the Locost class. Having secured the sponsorship of Dunlop and ATS Motorsport Supplies, the Lotus Challenge Series, which was started in 1996, continues to flourish and has had 311 different drivers taking part since its inception. With the season at the halfway stage now, Jeff Gable has a healthy 62-point lead in the Class B championship standings with JP Nortje in second place and David Jermy a further 9 points adrift. Nick Hodgson is the runaway leader in the Locost Class, enjoying a massive 73-point lead over Sean Hepburn in second, with Andy Fulton 19 points off in third. Saturday's racing action will see the Lotus series taking part in three 8-lap heats, and hopefully the weather gods will be kind to the competitors in their open cockpits. With rain forecast for most of the weekend, spectators can watch from the comfort of their vehicles parked around the circuit and listen to the live commentary on their radios. Included in the busy race schedule on Saturday is round four of the Algoa Motorsport Club championship that includes modified saloons, Advance Horizon Coastal Challenge for historic, classic, retro cars, as well as street and fine cars, CBR 150/250 motorcycles and the open motorcycle class. Qualifying is scheduled to start at 8.15am on Saturday with the first race at 10.15am and the race day will end with the Bronscor Ingco 45-Minute Endurance race that continues to grow in popularity, with the winner of the index-of-performance during the endurance race winning an Ingco 400NM impact gun. Cape visitors set to thrill at Aldo Scribante Raceway
An exciting change to this weekend's third round of the Algoa Motorsport Club's Regional championship is the addition of the Cape Town-based Kaltron Formula Supercars that are making the trip to Aldo Scribante Raceway. The cars that run a 2-litre Opel Motor were all built by the late Owen Ashley and celebrate their 30th year of existence next year. They will take part in three races, with the first two being for championship points and the third being a fun race where they will be joined by local Supercar racers Peter Schultz and Tom Hugo. A strong field of 20 modified saloons will be in action and sees legendary racer Syd Lippstreu with his immaculate Toyota Celica moving from the Retro Classic class and joining the modified saloons for the first time. The battle up front should once again be between the class B cars of Ian Riddle in his VW SuperPolo and Ian Oberholzer in his Volvo 850 station wagon as well as relative newcomer Elan Buchman in a VW SuperPolo. In the Wide Horizon Advance Training-sponsored Coastal Challenge for historics, classics and retro classics is Brent Watts, who is making a welcome return to circuit racing at Aldo Scribante Raceway in his Nissan Skyline and is set to give the similar Skylines of usual frontrunners Rane Berry and Tom Hugo a run for their money. East London visitor Neil Stephen returns with the only Opel Manta in the country that is racing and joins a whole fleet of classic Ford Escorts, Anglias and Capris as well as a classic VW Beetle with Henry Adams behind the wheel. Included in the mix are the street and fine cars with Barry Buchman in his Mercedes A45S and Ayrton Pilz in a Renault Clio 3 RS. Dylan Grobler returns to action after a short break in the open motorcycle class on his new 600cc Yamaha R6 and will be up against fellow 600cc competitors Ethan Diener, Ruan van Zyl and Ashton Heideman in what promises to be an epic battle on track. Kiera Potgieter is also back after taking a nasty tumble at the last round of the championship during qualifying and joins fellow girl racers Emma Diener and Kirsty Oberholzer in the CBR 150/250 motorcycle class where they will be up against Craig Benn, Dylan Grobler, Ruan van Zyl, Rob de Vos and Anthony Lippstreu Racing is set to start at 10.15am tomorrow and there will be three heats per class including the Ingco 45-Minute race that ends off the day and is set to start at about 4.15pm.
