RSS student wing finally breaches Left citadel JNU

India Today28-04-2025

New Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), where red ran deep, is now showing a saffron shift. In the hotly contested Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) elections, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has achieved a massive breakthrough in the traditionally Left-dominated campus. While the Left alliance secured key central panel posts, the ABVP made unprecedented gains in councillor seats. The ABVP won 23 out of 42 councillor seats across 16 schools and special centres, which is the highest number of seats won by any student body, according to BJP leader Amit Malviya.advertisementMoreover, the ABVP has also secured two out of five seats in the School of Social Sciences and the School of International Studies, strongholds long controlled by Left student bodies. The election's verdict, which was declared late on Sunday, marks the first time in 25 years that ABVP has won seats in the School of Social Sciences.ABVP GAVE LEFT UNIONS A CLOSE FIGHT FOR ALL JNUSU POSTS
Among the four key posts, ABVP's Vaibhav Meena has been elected Joint Secretary. Even in the vice-president and general secretary posts, where the Left alliance won, the ABVP fought close battles, losing by just 34 and 114 votes respectively.Meena's victory marks the first time since 2015–16, when ABVP's Saurav Sharma last clinched the joint secretary post, that the student wing has secured a central panel seat. The last time the ABVP won the JNUSU presidency was in 2000-01 when Sandeep Mahapatra was elected."History was created and this is just the beginning," posted the ABVP-JNU X handle.advertisementIn the JNUSU, the council is made up of the central panel (president, vice-president, secretary, and joint secretary) and the councillors, who hold the power to approve all proposals. With 23 seats now under its belt, the ABVP's influence over decision-making is set to rise significantly.ABVP SUCCESS IN JNU NO SURPRISE, GREW IN LAST 10 YEARSThe performance of the ABVP is a testimony to its growing presence and purchase on the JNU campus, where Left organisations like the All India Students' Association (AISA) and Students' Federation of India (SFI) have historically held sway. The Left's dominance in JNU, long hailed as a Left bastion, now stands shaken by the rise of the Saffron on the campus. The ABVP has significantly expanded its presence in JNU over the past decade. The AVBP's Sunday win follows a decade of incremental gains, with ABVP consistently polling 800-1,000 votes every year.In the 2024 JNUSU elections too, the ABVP came second in all the four key seats. The Left parties, on the other hand, had been hit by challenges of internal divisions before the 2024 elections. Unlike previous years, the Left went into the elections fragmented. The Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist)'s AISA and the SFI contested separately.Yet, despite the ABVP's sweep of the councillor seats and winning the joint secretary post is the beginning of the breach of the Left citadel. It will only be complete when the ABVP is able to win all the four top posts of the university's students union.Trending Reel

CPI(M) demands regularisation of houses built by poor on govt. lands

Communist Party of India-Marxist [CPI(M)] State Secretary V. Srinivasa Rao on Sunday (June 8) demanded that the government give land titles to the poor residing in houses on government land, as per the G.O. No. 30. Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Srinivasa Rao said the G.O. 30, issued in January to provide houses to the poor, has not been implemented. The G.O. clearly states that titles should be issued to those residing even on objectionable government land and that their settlements be regularised. The government did not carry out any door-to-door campaign, and even when people voluntarily submitted applications, the process remains pending. In places like Palakoderu, applications were not even accepted and were summarily rejected, he pointed out. In West Godavari district, the officials demolished the houses even after the residents applied for regularisation. Action should be taken against such officers and the police who carried out the demolitions, and houses should be built immediately or alternative homes provided at the same locations, he said. CPIM State secretariat member Ch. Babu Rao said the kind of attention being given to 'Yogandhra' should instead be focused on 'Gr̥hāndhra' (Home-Andhra) and 'Nivāsāndhra' (Residential-Andhra), but unfortunately, the government is not taking up such work. During the elections, the NDA promised to provide house sites—three cents in villages and two cents in towns—to the people. Now that a year has passed since the NDA came to power, he demanded that the government release a White Paper, detailing how many people have actually received the house sites.

DU students demand 50% concession on Metro and DTC rides

New Delhi: Members of the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) on Sunday took to the streets, demanding a 50% concession on metro and DTC rides for Delhi University (DU) students. Leading the protest, DUSU President Ronak Khatri addressed chief minister Rekha Gupta, urging her to act on this long-standing student demand. Khatri criticised the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad ( ABVP ) for failing to deliver on similar promises over the past decade and appealed to Gupta, a former DUSU President, to understand the challenges faced by the march, Khatri emphasised the determination of the students, stating, "Today, we are on the streets. If we are not heard, we will go to the CM's office. But we will ensure that students get what they deserve." The demand for concessional metro passes was a recurring issue in Delhi University politics, frequently appearing in DUSU election manifestos and gaining momentum through online campaigns. Student organisations such as ABVP, NSUI, AISA, and SFI consistently included metro pass discounts or even free passes in their platforms, but the initiative was yet to be implemented. In the 2024 DUSU elections, ABVP's manifesto promised discounted metro access, while AISA's 2023 manifesto pledged free metro passes in response to rising living costs under the National Education Policy reforms. Additionally, SFI launched an online campaign in late 2024 under the hashtag #StudentsForMetroPass, tagging key authorities and highlighting the financial burden on students who spend upwards of ₹3,000 monthly on commuting. The campaign included a social media storm and a protest outside the transport ministry, even garnering a 60,000-signature these efforts, the demand for concessional metro passes remains unmet, and student organisations continue to advocate for affordable transportation options to ease the financial strain on students.
