Southern Europe wildfires: 3 killed, thousands evacuated in Greece, Spain, Turkey, Albania; EU sends aid
Wildfires intensified across southern Europe on Wednesday, killing at least three people and forcing thousands to evacuate homes in Greece, Spain, Turkey and Albania.
In Greece, firefighters worked through the night to protect the port city of Patras, the country's third-largest city.
Flames swept through pine forests and olive groves, burning houses, agricultural sites and dozens of vehicles.
The fire service said the risk of more fires remained 'very high' in several regions. At least 15 firefighters were injured or treated for burns, smoke inhalation and exhaustion.
Residents joined the firefighting effort, using buckets of water and tree branches to beat down flames. Aircraft dropped water over the affected areas.
Weeks of heatwaves have stretched firefighting resources across Greece and its neighbours. On the Greek island of Chios, exhausted firefighters were seen sleeping on the roadside after overnight shifts.
In Albania, an 80-year-old man died in a fire south of Tirana. Villages in central Albania were evacuated, and explosions were reported in the Korca district due to buried World War II-era shells. Dozens of homes were destroyed.

Officials across the region cited lightning storms, farming activities, faulty power lines and arson as possible causes.
The European Union has sent ground teams and aircraft to help, including in Montenegro, where large fires continue to burn near the capital, Podgorica.

Panaji: After nearly three weeks of dry weather, the monsoon showed signs of revival over Goa as the state recorded 69.9mm of rainfall as of 8.30am on Aug 14. This marked the end of one of the longest lulls of the season, which lasted from July 26 to Aug 13. 'The prolonged dry period, spanning about 18 days, was unusual for Goa. However, recent weather developments indicate an active southwest monsoon phase returning to the region,' said M R Ramesh Kumar, meteorologist and retired scientist from the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Goa. He highlighted the potential formation of a low-pressure system in the central Bay of Bengal, which is likely to intensify into a depression. 'This weather system is expected to draw significant moisture from surrounding seas, resulting in heavy rainfall across peninsular India, including Goa,' he said. On Thursday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported moderate to heavy rainfall across most parts of Goa, signalling the resurgence of the monsoon. Panaji recorded 22mm of rainfall in 12 hours from 8.30am to 8.30pm. At least 51 killed in Kishtwar's Chisoti cloudburst

Prakasam barrage overflows, second flood warning issued
Vijayawada: The Krishna river swelled past its banks at the Prakasam barrage on Thursday afternoon, peaking at 5.67 lakh cusecs around 2 pm, prompting a second flood warning. By evening, inflows eased to 5.20 lakh cusecs, allowing officials to downgrade the alert to the first warning. Irrigation authorities expect the volume to drop to 2 lakh cusecs by Friday morning. Triggered by a low-pressure system, heavy rains lashed NTR, Palnadu, and Guntur districts in Andhra Pradesh, and Khammam, Nalgonda, and Hyderabad in Telangana. These downpours sent massive inflows into the Srisailam, Nagarjunasagar, Pulichintala, and Prakasam barrages. While inflows at Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar receded by Friday evening, Pulichintala and Prakasam continued to discharge heavily.
