"This seems to be the worst natural disaster the northern region of the country has witnessed in recent times. Dead bodies and injured are arriving at the hospital frequently. We need more and more medical staff here," said Farooq Ahmad, a Kishtwar resident who was present at one of the hospitals.

The cloudburst struck around 12:30 pm in Chisoti area, around 90 km from Kishtwar town, which is the last motorable village en route to Machail Mata temple. A large number of pilgrims were present in the area for the annual yatra, which started on July 25 and was scheduled to end on September 5. The 8.5 kilometre trek to the 9,500-feet-high shrine begins from Chisoti.
The cloudburst struck the community kitchen set up for the pilgrims in the village which led to flash floods and washed away several structures including shops and a security outpost.
"Spoke with the LG and chief minister of J&K on the cloudburst," Union home minister Amit Shah said in a post on X. Lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha said rescue and relief operations were in full swing.
Army's Jammu-based White Knight Corps said efforts were on to safeguard lives and aid the survivors. "Efforts are centred on safeguarding lives and aiding survivors. Search for missing continues. Relief stores, medical teams and rescue gear rushed to site. We Serve, We Protect," it posted on X.

L udhiana: The district has recorded 23% more rainfall than usual this monsoon season, even as the current month shows a modest deficit that weather officials classify as normal. Tthe meteorological department has observed that rainfall in Ludhiana between June 1 and Aug 17 reached 396.4 mm, compared with the seasonal norm of 321.4 mm. That puts the district among eight in Punjab with above-average rainfall this year. Tarn Taran saw the sharpest excess at 79%, while Kapurthala reported the steepest seasonal shortfall at 70%. For Aug, Ludhiana received 84.4 mm of rain in the first 17 days, about 12% less than the norm of 96.5 mm. A Chandigarh-based weather official said such a variation falls within the "normal" range, defined as rainfall 19% above or below average. Elsewhere in Punjab, Pathankot recorded 108% excess rainfall this month, while Bathinda saw a deficit of 96%. Despite the uneven distribution, residents say this year's monsoon has brought timely relief. "It rains often after hot and humid spells," said Gurpreet Singh, a Ludhiana resident. At least 7 killed in landslides in J&K's Kathua; 11 injured
Synopsis Heavy rains triggered landslides in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the tragic death of seven people, including five children, and injuries to eleven others across Jodh Ghati and Bagra villages. The calamity followed a recent cloudburst in Kishtwar, where rescue operations continue amidst a rising death toll. Authorities are providing assistance and initiating restoration efforts. Srinagar: Seven persons were killed and 11 other injured in two separate incidents of landslides on Sunday morning in Kathua district of Jammu and calamity struck Jodh Ghati village of Rajbagh and Bagra village of Janglote where seven members of four families were killed, including five children. Heavy rains that continued overnight also triggered landslides in Changda village of Kathua and Dilwan-Hutli in Lakhanpur but no major damage was reported from the area. The rains submerged several low-lying areas in the district and the railway line passing through Kathua was also shut. This fresh string of cloudbursts and landslides in Kathua came a few days after a cloudburst triggered flash floods in Chisoti village in Kishtwar district on August 14, at least 60 people dead, more than 100 injured and several people Kathua, the roads leading to the affected villages were damaged and washed away in some places, and all the rivers and canals in the area were flowing above the danger mark on Sunday. Chennai: Rain and returning weekend travellers brought traffic to a grinding halt on GST Road and adjoining highways on Sunday evening, with vehicles crawling bumper to bumper from Chengalpet to Tambaram.
