udhiana: The district has recorded 23% more rainfall than usual this monsoon season, even as the current month shows a modest deficit that weather officials classify as normal.
Tthe meteorological department has observed that rainfall in Ludhiana between June 1 and Aug 17 reached 396.4 mm, compared with the seasonal norm of 321.4 mm. That puts the district among eight in Punjab with above-average rainfall this year. Tarn Taran saw the sharpest excess at 79%, while Kapurthala reported the steepest seasonal shortfall at 70%.
For Aug, Ludhiana received 84.4 mm of rain in the first 17 days, about 12% less than the norm of 96.5 mm.
A Chandigarh-based weather official said such a variation falls within the "normal" range, defined as rainfall 19% above or below average. Elsewhere in Punjab, Pathankot recorded 108% excess rainfall this month, while Bathinda saw a deficit of 96%.
Despite the uneven distribution, residents say this year's monsoon has brought timely relief. "It rains often after hot and humid spells," said Gurpreet Singh, a Ludhiana resident. "The weather feels much better than in previous years."
