
Trump's vision for a twin-engine F-55 fighter jet faces reality check
Speaking in Doha last month, Trump said the new "F-55" would feature "two engines and a super upgrade on the F-35." However, there is a caveat, with Trump saying, "if we get the right price."
Trump was not shown a twin-engine redesign of the F-35, the two sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter. Developing such a jet would require an extensive overhaul, running into billions of dollars and taking years to complete, the sources said.
Lockheed Martin (LMT.N), opens new tab had briefed Trump on a possible upgrade to the F-35 during multiple meetings before the Doha event, the people said. The proposal included just one "advanced" engine, a redesigned nose and forward fuselage, and a new sensor suite.
Trump's reference to the "F-55" - the designator of the jet - caught officials and industry insiders off guard, particularly the mention of twin engines, a feature Trump has said he prefers for safety in case one engine fails.
Lockheed is exploring the development of two new fighter jet variations, according to industry experts and the two sources.
The proposed F-55 emerges against a backdrop of intensifying global competition in military aviation. China continues rapid development of its J-36 and J-50 stealth fighters, while Russia advances its Su-57 program despite economic constraints.
After Doha, Lockheed acknowledged Trump's comments with measured enthusiasm, stating, "We thank President Trump for his support of the F-35 and F-22 and will continue to work closely with the Administration to realize its vision for air dominance."
A Wall Street analyst tracking what might replace Lockheed Martin's (LMT.N), opens new tab F-35, said "it sounds like Trump has asked DoD to consider a twin-engine variant of the F-35 'if we get the right price,'" according to a note from TD Cowen.
Shifting the F-55 to two engines would initiate a costly and lengthy redesign of the F-35's airframe - and while it would make the jet fast, it would delay production by years, industry experts and one of the people said.
Lockheed CEO James Taiclet had told investors in an April call that the company was exploring a "fifth-generation-plus" fighter concept that would apply technologies developed for its unsuccessful F-47 bid to enhance the F-35 platform.
These new technologies would make it much harder to export the F-55, the people said, adding that they are still highly controlled.
"We're basically going to take the chassis and turn it into a Ferrari," Taiclet told analysts in April, claiming such an approach could deliver 80% of next-generation capability at half the cost.
Boeing (BA.N), opens new tab beat out Lockheed to win the contract for Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD), now named the F-47 which will be America's first sixth-generation fighter and intended to replace Lockheed Martin's F-22 Raptor.
Because Lockheed lost the NGAD competition it is able to leverage its production plans for new jets.
Lockheed had production spaces already lined up, the people said, and the president was made aware the company was poised to move ahead. "Lockheed is much further along than he realized," one of the people said.
The timing of the F-55 announcement raises questions about how it fits into existing defense procurement plans and budgets. The Pentagon is already managing multiple high-cost aviation programs, including the ongoing F-35 program, the new F-47 development, and potentially the Navy's next generation carrier-based fighter jet - F/A-XX.
For Lockheed Martin, the F-55 concept represents a critical opportunity to maintain relevance in the high-end fighter market after significant setbacks in next-generation competitions.
Boeing's NGAD, which was just awarded and therefore is not in mass production yet, is expected to eclipse the F-22's capabilities, and so would F-55, the person said, making it a formidable fighter jet.

Mississippi Supreme Court election map dilutes Black voters' power, judge rules
Aug 20 (Reuters) - A federal judge has ordered Mississippi to redraw its election map used in voting for state supreme court justices after finding the current one dilutes the power of Black voters in violation of a landmark federal voting rights law. U.S. District Judge Sharion Aycock in Greenville sided with, opens new tab a group of Black citizens of the state in finding on Tuesday that the map in place since 1987 for Mississippi Supreme Court elections violated the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The court's nine justices are elected in nonpartisan races from three districts to serve eight-year, staggered terms. The map's lines are drawn by the state legislature and have changed little in over a century, according to the plaintiffs. Black people make up about 40% of the state's population, but Aycock noted that the Mississippi Supreme Court has had only four Black justices, none of whom have served at the same time. Each held the same seat in District 1, which includes the city of Jackson and part of the Mississippi Delta, and all four were first appointed by a governor. The only Black justice currently is Presiding Justice Leslie King. "In short, the evidence illustrates that Black candidates who desire to run for the Mississippi Supreme Court face a grim likelihood of success," Aycock wrote. The Republican-led state argued the current map was sufficient because District 1 already represented an election district in which Black people make up a majority of the voting age population, at 51.1%. But Aycock, who presided over a non-jury trial in the case, said that data did not reflect voter eligibility or account for the state's lifetime ban on voting for people convicted of certain felonies, which disproportionately affects Black people. Aycock pointed to a history of the southern state suppressing Black voters over nearly a century leading up to the Voting Rights Act's passage, after they gained the right to vote in the state in 1868 following the end of the Civil War. "The evidence reveals a history of voting-related discrimination in Mississippi and the utilization of voting practices and procedures that continue to enhance the opportunity to discriminate against or suppress the votes of Black Mississippians," Aycock wrote. The judge, an appointee of Republican President George W. Bush, blocked future use of the current map and directed the Mississippi legislature to draw up a new one. She said she would hold a hearing to address what deadline should be set. 'This win corrects a historic injustice,' Ari Savitzky, a lawyer with the American Civil Liberties Union who represented the plaintiffs, said in a statement. A spokesperson for Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch, whose office defended the current map, said her office is reviewing the ruling. The case is White v. State Board of Election Commissioners, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Mississippi, No. 22-cv-00062. That EV You Just Bought Probably Has Too Much Range

A new study indicates that EV owners aren't making frequent use of their car's full range capacity. Data from more than 40,000 EVs shows that owners are leaving range on the table in their daily routines, but the trend in the automotive industry is just the opposite – automakers continue to add range to their EVs through larger batteries and higher-density battery cells. EV Owners Aren't Using All That Range Source: Mercedes-Benz Research from a startup focused on 'providing more transparency and confidence in electric car transactions,' Recurrent, shows that owners aren't using more than 80% of their EVs' range. You might argue that's the point. After all, people don't go out every day and use all 27 gallons of gas in their car. It's silly to assume an EV owner should be going out and using all 325 miles of range in their car. All that range is nice when you need it, and provides more of a safety net than a smaller battery does. However, Recurrent argues that's a problem on its own, as larger batteries significantly increase cost. According to the study, an EV with 300 miles of range likely won't see more than 22 percent of its battery used in a day. Electric cars with an EPA-estimated range of between 350 and 375 miles will only average around 40.9 miles per day, and EVs with more available range do typically get driven further by their owners. Those with an EPA range of 100-125 miles see about 22.2 miles per day. The weighted average comes out to 12.6% of an EV's battery being used daily. Even the most range-rich owners still leave 88%+ of their range unused most days. Recurrent There's a few possible reasons: for one, the extra range is a sort of 'safety blanket,' and owners do still cite range anxiety as their largest concern before buying an EV. That changes after the purchase happens, and another Recurrent study has shown that range anxiety declines the longer you've owned and driven an EV. A bigger battery costs more to make because it uses more materials, and automakers will adjust prices to keep their margins intact. Consumers will pay more for range they don't use but a few times a year, in the event of, say, a long road trip, if ever. There's another issue: buyers are seeking affordable cars, and admittedly, some automakers are racing to provide them. Ford has just announced a new, cheap electric truck. It'll have a smaller battery and less range, not unlike Slate, another upcoming cheap truck with less-than-average range. But plenty of other automakers seek to pile on range through solid-state batteries and larger traditional battery packs, hoping to help pacify the 48% of EV buyers who say they're worried about range.
