Fourth former Drake Bulldog commits to Iowa basketball
Howard arrives with three seasons of eligibility and dons the black and gold after a freshman season at Drake in which he averaged 4.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game. The 6-foot-5, 200 pound guard shot 43.5% from the field, including 31.1% from 3-point range.

Howard played in 30 games and scored in double figures on three occasions, including his career-high 21-point outing against Southern Illinois on March 7 in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament semifinal.
A native of Plattsburg, Mo., Howard was ranked as a three-star signee to Drake in the 2024 class per 247Sports. 247Sports ranked Howard as the nation's No. 67 shooting guard and as the No. 10 player from Missouri.
Howard joins a Hawkeye roster that features a trio of his former Drake teammates in guards Bennett Stirtz and Kael Combs and in forward Cam Manyawu.
Iowa also brings back sophomore forward Cooper Koch, who decided upon a return to Iowa after briefly entering the transfer portal. Koch appeared in 10 games, averaging 4.6 points and 2.1 rebounds per game while shooting 48.4% from the field and 42.9% from 3-point range.

Stirtz was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year last season after posting averages of 19.2 points, 5.7 assists, and 4.3 rebounds per game while shooting 49.8% from the field and 39.5% from 3-point range.
Manyawu averaged 7.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game on 57.8% shooting from the field while starting all 35 games for the Bulldogs last season.
Lastly, Combs played in 31 games last season at Drake, averaging 3.8 points and 2.0 rebounds per game while shooting 51.1% from the field and 80.0% from the free throw line.

There's only one Big Ten team Tom Izzo believes is a cut above MSU entering next season
In the eyes of Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo, there's only one team in the Big Ten he considers a cut above his Spartans right now. Izzo was a guest on Jon Rothstein's podcast Inside College Basketball Now this week, where he answered a number critical questions. One of those was assessing his team and where it stacks up with the rest of the league -- which Izzo apparently feels pretty good about. Izzo said he feels his team has as good of a returning nucleus as anyone else in the Big Ten, except for the Purdue Boilermakers -- who he believes are a cut above the rest of the league. "We got our main stays," Izzo said during the interview. "Coen Carr has gotten a lot better, Jeremy Fears, Carson Cooper has really made some progress, and Jaxon Kohler, and that's four really good main stays that have played a lot of minutes here. Now it's about adding in the guys. Does a Kur Teng -- a shooter that we have -- really improve, does it have to be one of our new guys. I think we more than anybody but Purdue, maybe, we have a base of, I wouldn't say starters back, but top six or seven guys and now two of those guys are seniors." Michigan State won the Big Ten last season by three games and was clearly the best team in the league by the time March rolled around. But the Spartans have lost a number of key contributors from that squad, including top scorers Jase Richardson and Jaden Akins. But regardless of that, Izzo appears to be pretty excited about the team he has in front of him for this next season -- which is great news for us Spartans. Izzo has never been the type to sugarcoat anything and will call it as it is, so to hear him speak this highly of his team for next year is a great sign. The SEC will reportedly implement a 9 game conference schedule, starting in 2026
What was once a rumor has become reality, as Tuesday's breaking news revealed that the SEC will implement a nine-game conference schedule, which will begin during the 2026 season. Again, this was seemingly always in the works, knowing the obvious financial benefits for all 16 conference teams, while making the first two games of the season even more important regarding the College Football Playoff. To start, the SEC will remain divisionless, while each program will now have three permanent rivalries that it will face each season. Furthermore, nine conference games mean each SEC team will face one another at least once every two years, at home and away every four years. Outside of the conference, SEC teams will now be required to schedule one team from the Big 12, Big Ten, or Texas A&M's Week 3 opponent, Notre Dame, every season. This change only enhances the early-season competitiveness, providing the top-tier SEC teams an opportunity to schedule a top program out of three of the four Power conferences, or the Fighting Irish, to beef up their CFP resume. Texas A&M's current three permanent opponents are Texas, LSU, and Missouri, but with an extra conference game, the Aggies will now face Georgia for the first time since the 2019 season, and Kentucky in Lexington for the first time in program history. However, Texas A&M's new permanent opponents will change, and right now, I'll guess that Texas, LSU, and either Arkansas or South Carolina will be the top options, with the Longhorns and Tigers being the undeniable leaders. How did Bill Belichick compare UNC football practices to those in the NFL preseason? The North Carolina Tar Heels, desperately seeking for a return to college football relevancy, hired Bill Belichick to be their next head coach back in December. Belichick, who has nearly 50 years of NFL experience under his extensive coaching resume, won eight Super Bowls between his time with the New York Giants and New England Patriots. UNC is hoping that Belichick, despite being a first-time coach at the college level, will channel his NFL experience and intensity into a winning football program from Chapel Hill. That includes practices, which North Carolina players first donned offseason pads for on August 2 – the first day of Training Camp. During media availability on Wednesday inside the Kenan Football center, Belichick spoke extensively about his live work with the Tar Heels, comparing it to his time in the pros. 'We've done a lot more live work here than we ever did in the NFL, at any team I was ever on," Belichick said. "So that part of it's been actually an interesting thing to see. Some of the coaches that are on our staff that have had a lot of college experience have talked about the necessity to do that again, obviously, without pre season games. We do need to do it and we've done it. The amount of contact that we've had with the very few guys losing any playing time, at all, because of it has been good.' One of top issues Belichick has to solve, in practice, is finding UNC's next starting quarterback. Experience gives Max Johnson the upper-hand alone, but he spent most of 2024 recovering from a broken leg. Gio Lopez transferred in from South Alabama, leading the Jaguars to a winning record and their second-straight bowl victory. Bryce Baker wowed at East Forsyth High School – and he's one of three freshman (Au'Tori Newkirk, Gary Merrill) in North Carolina's QB room. The Tar Heels also need to choose nine new defensive starters, figure out their wide receiver depth chart and starting tight end, amongst other positional battles throughout the roster. Whomever UNC decides to start during Week 1 against TCU, there's just over a week to do so. Live practices give Belichick the best look at his players, who are excited to play for the GOAT this fall.
