The death toll from a collision between a bus carrying Afghan migrants returning from Iran and two other vehicles in western Afghanistan has risen to 76, a provincial official said on Wednesday.
'Seventy-six citizens of the country… lost their lives in the incident, and three others were seriously injured,' Mohammad Yousuf Saeedi, Herat provincial government spokesman, said in a statement.
The dead were transferred to a military hospital, with more than a dozen children among those killed, army statements said.
Many of the bodies were 'unidentifiable', said Mohammad Janan Moqadas, chief physician of Al-Farooq Army Corps Hospital.
Police in Guzara district outside Herat city, where the accident took place on Tuesday night, said the bus collided with a motorcycle and a truck carrying fuel, sparking a fire.

An AFP journalist on Tuesday night saw the burnt shell of the bus on the road hours after the accident.
The bus was carrying Afghans recently returned from Iran to the capital Kabul, Saeedi told AFP on Tuesday.
At least 1.5 million people have returned to Afghanistan since the start of this year from Iran and Pakistan, both of which have sought to force migrants out after decades of hosting them, according to the UN migration agency.
Many of those returning spent years outside the country and arrive without a place to go and carrying few belongings, facing steep challenges to resettle in a country facing endemic poverty and high unemployment.
The state-run Bakhtar News Agency said Tuesday's accident was one of the deadliest in the country in recent years.
Traffic accidents are common in Afghanistan, due in part to poor roads after decades of conflict, dangerous driving on highways and a lack of regulation.
In December last year, two bus accidents involving a fuel tanker and a truck on a highway through central Afghanistan killed at least 52.
In March 2024, more than 20 people were killed and 38 injured when a bus collided with a fuel tanker and burst into flames in southern Helmand province.

Another serious accident involving a fuel tanker took place in December 2022, when the vehicle overturned and caught fire in Afghanistan's high-altitude Salang Pass, killing 31 people.

‘Total victory': Trump after US court quashes $464 million civil penalty against him

United States President Donald Trump called a US court verdict quashing a $464 million civil penalty against him a 'total victory' on Thursday. In the initial ruling against Trump, Engoron ordered the US President to pay a civil penalty of $464 million, including interest.(REUTERS) The penalty on the US President had been imposed by a judge who found that Trump had fraudulently inflated his personal wealth. Judge Arthur Engoron had ruled against Trump in February 2024, during the launch of his campaign for the presidential elections, AFP reported. There were several active criminal prosecutions filed against Trump at the same time, with the Republic terming these as 'lawfare'. In the initial ruling against Trump, Engoron ordered the US President to pay a civil penalty of $464 million, including interest. The ruling also ordered his sons Eric and Don Jr. to pay more than $4 million each. The judge found that Trump and his company had fraudulently inflated his wealth, manipulating the value of their properties to get bank loans or insurance terms in their favour, according to AFP. In the ruling, Engoron also banned Trump from running businesses for three years. A US Appeals court on Thursday upheld the earlier verdict, but called the fine 'excessive', adding that it violates the Eighth Amendment of the United States Constitution. 'Political witch hunt,' says Trump after Appeals court verdict While hailing 'total victory' after the civil penalty was quashed, Trump called the earlier court ruling a 'political witch hunt". 'It was a Political Witch Hunt, in a business sense, the likes of which no one has ever seen before. This was a Case of Election Interference by the City and State trying to show, illegally, that I did things that were wrong when, in fact, everything I did was absolutely CORRECT and, even, PERFECT,' Trump said in a post on Truth Social. He further called the initial verdict a 'FAKE New York State Attorney General Letitia James Case'. Trump said that he respected the 'courage' shown by the US court in throwing out the 'unlawful and disgraceful Decision that was hurting Business all throughout New York State.' 'Others were afraid to do business there. The amount, including Interest and Penalties, was over $550 Million Dollars,' the US President said. In his post, Trump referred to Engoron as 'incompetent', while calling Attorney General Letitia James 'corrupt'. 'They made me bond the outrageous sum, which never happened before, and which cost me Millions of Dollars a month. It should have never been allowed to happen, and everyone knew it! Importantly, the Vote was 5 to 0,' Trump said.

Autopsy Rules Out Trauma Or Foul Play In Death Of French Streamer Who Died On Air

Last Updated: The initial autopsy results show 'no internal or external traumatic injuries' or burns on the body, with only minor bruises and healed lesions observed A post-mortem examination has ruled out trauma or third-party involvement in the death of French streamer Raphael Graven, who passed away during a live broadcast earlier this week. Graven, 46, known online as 'Jean Pormanove" or simply 'JP", died on Monday in the village of Contes near Nice. He was found unresponsive at home shortly after ending a livestream on the platform Kick. According to Nice prosecutor Damien Martinelli, the initial autopsy results show 'no internal or external traumatic injuries" or burns on the body, with only minor bruises and healed lesions observed. 'The probable causes of death appear to be medical and/or toxicological," he said, adding that more tests have been ordered. Footage from the livestream showed Graven lying under a sheet while another man threw a plastic bottle at him. Despite the disturbing nature of the scene, prosecutors confirmed there were no signs of violence or assault. 'The medical experts consider that Mr Graven's death was not traumatic in origin and was not related to the intervention of a third party," Martinelli said. Authorities said Graven had a history of heart problems and was receiving treatment for a thyroid condition, which could have played a role in his sudden death. Kick has suspended all co-streamers involved in the broadcast pending the results of the investigation. The company also announced a full review of its French content policies.
