PM Modi makes cricket references in speech in Namibia Parliament, wishes success in co-hosting 2027 Cricket World Cup
PM Modi referred to cricket in the context of increasing bilateral trade and then said, 'we are just warming up'.
'Our bilateral trade has crossed 800 million dollars. But, like on the cricket field, we are just warming up. We will score faster and score more,' he said.
Concluding his remarks, PM Modi wished Namibia great success in co-hosting the 2027 Cricket World Cup.
'I conclude by wishing Namibia great success in co-hosting the 2027 Cricket World Cup. And, if your Eagles need any cricket tips, you know whom to call,' he said, evoking another round of applause.
Eagles is the nickname of the Namibian men's national cricket team.
The 2027 Cricket World Cup will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
'While the other two teams have qualified directly as hosts because they are full members of the International Cricket Council (ICC) and play Test cricket, the same privilege is not available for Namibia, who will have to play the qualifiers.
The event could also be the last chance for Indian legend Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to clinch the trophy as seniors, with Virat having won back in 2011. Rohit, leading the team in a 50-over World Cup in India back in 2023, endured one of the most heart-breaking losses as Pat Cummins-led Australia triumphed in the finals at Ahmedabad.
Namibia's sole appearance in the 50-over World Cup was in the 2003 edition, where they finished last, losing all six matches.
They did participate in the T20 World Cup 2021, concluding their campaign in the Super 12 Stage with three wins and five losses.
In the next tournament in Australia in 2022, they exited in the group stage, but secured a shocker win over former T20 World Cup winners Sri Lanka.
PM Modi received a standing ovation and non-stop applause after his address at the Namibian Parliament.
PM Modi departed from Namibia for New Delhi on Wednesday after concluding his five-nation tour. (ANI)

‘He thought that was a World Cup final': Ben Stokes recalls conversation when Jofra Archer confused date of ENG's 2019 WC triumph with IND's 2002 NatWest final win
After edging past India in a tense 3rd Test at Lord's which England won by 22 runs, captain Ben Stokes shared a hilarious conversation with pacer Jofra Archer ahead of the 5th day's play on Sunday. This was the same date (July 14) where on 6 years ago, England had won the 2019 World Cup with Archer and Stokes both playing pivotal roles. But according to Stokes, Archer got confused over the date and thought it was the day India had chased 326 to win the NatWest final at Lord's in 2002. 'You know what day today is, don't you?' Stokes had asked Archer. 'You know that highlight package of India knocking off 300-odd back in the day with Ganguly? He thought that was a World Cup final. He thought that was six years ago today. Absolute beauty, that boy,' Stokes revealed to the reporters after the 3rd Test on Sunday. 6 years ago, England had won the World Cup 2019 on basis of hitting more boundaries than New Zealand in the final. The match was a tie after 50 overs as well as after the Super Over. This was the first time England had won the World Cup title and also the first time a 50-over World Cup was decided after the Super Over. Stokes did not have much of a role to play in the first innings, but he played one of the innings of his life in the second one with the England side in crisis. When Jos Buttler came out to join him, England were struggling at 86/4 in the 24th over, their World Cup dreams threatening to evaporate. His 110-run partnership with Buttler brought the chase back to life. Not only that, with signs of mental exhaustion writ large on his face, he marshalled the England lower order to take the match to a Super Over by taking a single off the last ball. Not surprisingly, he was one of the batsmen nominated by England to bat in the Super Over. In the Super Over, Stokes and Buttler came out to bat for England and plundered 15 runs in the one over bowled by Trent Boult. Archer took the ball for England, while New Zealand sent out Martin Guptill and Jimmy Neesham. Neesham got off to a great start but there was a run out off the last ball. England were awarded the match for their superior boundary count.

IND vs ENG 3rd Test: Ex-England cricketer shares where India lost Lord's Test – 'The eight-minute over flipped…'
India's Shubman Gill and England's Zak Crawley have words at the end of the third day during the third cricket test match between England and India at Lord's cricket ground in London, Saturday, July 12, 2025. (Bradley Collyer/PA via AP) Former England pacer Stuart Broad revealed where the third Test between India and England flipped and made the Lord's Test a classic. England won the Lord's Test by 22 runs and lead the five-match Test series 2-1. The fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy will be played at Old Trafford in Manchester, starting from July 23. "I think the whole Test match flipped on that brilliant over at the end of Day Three," Broad said on For the Love of Cricket, his new podcast with Jos Buttler. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Broad was referring to the last over before the end of the day's play, where tempers flared between Indian fielders and England openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett. "It was sort of eight minutes to go. Obviously, England were thinking we can make this one over, India wanted to get two in. It had been a really sort of slow Test match, although we had Rooty's class with a hundred, KL Rahul's class with a hundred. India vs England: India fall short at Lord's, England lead series 2-1 "Then this over came, and Crawley's under a bit of pressure. Obviously, Bumrah charging in, pulling away—just absolute carnage and chaos. I think I put on my Instagram that I'd been whinging about slow play, mainly aimed at the umpires, who just dawdle along like they're listening to classical music between overs. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Concentrated Siberian Ginseng Extract 2oz Superior Ginseng Undo It takes forever for the play to start. I'd been whinging about everything speeding up, and then this over took eight minutes—and it was the most brilliant eight minutes of drama and play-acting. "Shubman Gill loses the plot and starts effing and blinding at Zak. I think that ignited the Test match completely because they walked off the field, Crawley got through it, still ding-donging on the way back to the pavilion," he added. Buttler chimed in and said the incident also riled up England captain Ben Stokes, who was watching everything from the Lord's balcony. Poll What was the turning point of the Lord's Test according to Stuart Broad? Last over of Day Three KL Rahul's century Ben Stokes' leadership Shubman Gill's outburst "I thought this Test showed both sides just how much this series meant to them—how desperate they were to win," he said. "I mean, Stokes the captain just drags his team with him all the way, and then the impact—you know, then you think about him watching that one over from the balcony thinking, 'Right, it's game on. You're going after one of my players, this is it. It's all on the line. We can't wait to get out there and have a go back at you,'" said Buttler.
