PM Modi makes cricket references in speech in Namibia Parliament, wishes success in co-hosting 2027 Cricket World Cup
PM Modi referred to cricket in the context of increasing bilateral trade and then said, 'we are just warming up'.
'Our bilateral trade has crossed 800 million dollars. But, like on the cricket field, we are just warming up. We will score faster and score more,' he said.
Concluding his remarks, PM Modi wished Namibia great success in co-hosting the 2027 Cricket World Cup.
'I conclude by wishing Namibia great success in co-hosting the 2027 Cricket World Cup. And, if your Eagles need any cricket tips, you know whom to call,' he said, evoking another round of applause.
Eagles is the nickname of the Namibian men's national cricket team.
The 2027 Cricket World Cup will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
'While the other two teams have qualified directly as hosts because they are full members of the International Cricket Council (ICC) and play Test cricket, the same privilege is not available for Namibia, who will have to play the qualifiers.
The event could also be the last chance for Indian legend Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to clinch the trophy as seniors, with Virat having won back in 2011. Rohit, leading the team in a 50-over World Cup in India back in 2023, endured one of the most heart-breaking losses as Pat Cummins-led Australia triumphed in the finals at Ahmedabad.
Namibia's sole appearance in the 50-over World Cup was in the 2003 edition, where they finished last, losing all six matches.
They did participate in the T20 World Cup 2021, concluding their campaign in the Super 12 Stage with three wins and five losses.
In the next tournament in Australia in 2022, they exited in the group stage, but secured a shocker win over former T20 World Cup winners Sri Lanka.
PM Modi received a standing ovation and non-stop applause after his address at the Namibian Parliament.

The match was a tie after 50 overs as well as after the Super Over. This was the first time England had won the World Cup title and also the first time a 50-over World Cup was decided after the Super Over. Stokes did not have much of a role to play in the first innings, but he played one of the innings of his life in the second one with the England side in crisis. When Jos Buttler came out to join him, England were struggling at 86/4 in the 24th over, their World Cup dreams threatening to evaporate. His 110-run partnership with Buttler brought the chase back to life. Not only that, with signs of mental exhaustion writ large on his face, he marshalled the England lower order to take the match to a Super Over by taking a single off the last ball. Not surprisingly, he was one of the batsmen nominated by England to bat in the Super Over. In the Super Over, Stokes and Buttler came out to bat for England and plundered 15 runs in the one over bowled by Trent Boult. Archer took the ball for England, while New Zealand sent out Martin Guptill and Jimmy Neesham. Neesham got off to a great start but there was a run out off the last ball. England were awarded the match for their superior boundary count.

India to play warmups against England, NZ ahead of Womens World Cup
Dubai, Jul 15 (PTI) India will play warmup matches against England and New Zealand in Bengaluru, ahead of the Women's ODI World Cup being jointly organised by India and Sri Lanka in September-October this year. Pakistan will play both their warmup games as well as its World Cup matches in Sri Lanka, as agreed mutually by the BCCI and Pakistan Cricket Board. India will take on England in the first warmup game on September 25 at BCCI's Centre of Excellence ground and play New Zealand at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on September 27, three days before the start of the tournament at the same venue on September 30. Pakistan will play their warmup games in Colombo on September 25 and 28 at the Colombo Cricket Club against Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka 'A' teams respectively. "In all, nine day-night matches will be played from 25-28 September at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, the BCCI Centre of Excellence 1 ground (both Bengaluru), R Premadasa Stadium and Colombo Cricket Club (both Colombo)," ICC said in a release on Tuesday. Eight teams are competing in the round-robin warmups with matches across four venues in Bengaluru and Colombo. Defending champions Australia, the only team not playing on the opening day of the warmups, start with a match against arch-foes England at the BCCI Centre of Excellence 1 ground on September 27.
