Stunning Docklands riverside hotel is perfect spot to enjoy trip with ‘Friends'

The hotel was ideal for visit to the Friends exhibition at the ExCel
WHEN people head for a trip to London, it's usually to take in iconic sights like Big Ben or Buckingham Palace.
But when I booked a surprise trip for my sister Lorna's big 50, having already seen the Big Smoke's most famous landmarks a few times over, we decided to check out a different side of the city.

So, I arranged an afternoon of comedy and capers at the incredible Friends Experience in the ExCeL Centre and after flying down to Heathrow we headed for London's Docklands.
Our base for the weekend was the Crown Plaza London Docklands — and what a beautiful one it was.
The hotel sits right on the water's edge, sharing its peak spot with some quirky street food vendors.
After a quick selfie by the funky flower wall, we headed upstairs to our superior room which offered plenty of space, TWO king-sized beds and a cracking river view.

Dinner was at stylish in-house restaurant Fremantle, where the menu offers tastes from around the globe and the drinks are just as varied.
We both opted for the tempura prawns for our starters, which were deliciously crisp and juicy.
I followed that with the BBQ steak flatbread with bourbon chipotle, tomato salsa and szechuan crunch which was a delight.

Sis enjoyed the chicken katsu sando with pickled shallots, peppers and Thai chilli jam, all washed down with a beautiful bottle of Malbec.
Next day, after tucking into Fremantle's massive hot buffet breakfast we went exploring after deciding to stay local in the Docklands.
Just a stone's throw from the hotel is Heroica, a unique bar and dining experience where you can enjoy a beer and a pizza inside an old London bus.

Still too full from breakfast, we enjoyed a refreshing pre-lunch Aperol Spritz.

Nearby is the IFS Cloud Cable Car which takes you (as the name suggests) into the clouds, 90 metres above the River Thames to the Greenwich Peninsula and home of the Millennium Dome — now known as the O2 — where between shops, bars and restaurants and various different experiences, you won't be stuck to fill your day.
Birthday celebration
As it happened we had a date with some 'Friends', so after a bite to eat at Gordon Ramsay's Street Burger, we hopped back on the cable car and headed to the ExCeL London, which was, conveniently, a five- minute walk from the hotel.
After watching Friends together over and over (and over!), for more than 30 years the Friends Experience was the perfect way to spend a big birthday celebration.
We ambled through the set recreations and interactive displays reminiscing about all the moments over the last three decades that have made us laugh again and again.

Walking into Monica and Rachel's and Chandler and Joey's apartments was so surreal and so special.

We sat by the big window, hoping not to catch a glimpse of Ugly Naked Guy, played some fusball in the boys' kitchen and had a go on Phoebe's guitar and Ross's keyboard in the world famous Central Perk, before enjoying a glass of bubbly watching the world go by.
After that we jumped on the Elizabeth Line and headed just one short stop to the thriving Canary Wharf for some dinner at Wahaca — an authentic and trendy Mexican restaurant set up by Masterchef winner, Thomasina Miers, which serves up the best nachos and margaritas I've ever had.

Once a hub for shipping and industry, London's Docklands has made a name for itself as a vibrant, fun place to both live and visit.
The Crowne Plaza is the perfect spot to stay for a gig at the O2 or ExCeL or even if you're looking for an easy way to get in and out of the Big Smoke's more bustling parts.
It's also a great place to unwind away from the crowds and enjoy London at leisure.

Greek hotel hits back at gran who complained it didn't serve English food

A hotel on island of Corfu has hit back at a grandmother who swore she would never return because they didn't serve British food. Susan Edwards, 69, went on what she hoped would be a dream all-inclusive holiday at the Lido Corfu Sun Hotel. But the Greek resort – roughly 1,600 miles away from England – didn't serve any English food. She flew to the hotel in May with her daughter and three cousins at a cost of around £750 each. However, she said conditions were horrendous from the minute they arrived. The all-inclusive drinks on offer only included wine, lager, ouzo or brandy, meaning she had to pay extra for her Bacardi and coke. Susan, from Westerhope, Newcastle, says that she could not eat a lot of what was on offer due to her ulcerative colitis – a condition that is not caused by diet, but can be helped by avoiding certain foods. But the hotel boss has defended what they had on offer, branding her claims as 'false and disrespectful'. Manager Makis Triantafyllos told The Sun the food service is 'generous and diverse, offering fresh salads, fruits, hot and cold dishes daily'. He said: 'Targeting a hotel with excellent ratings (8+/10 on and 4.3/5 on Google) and many loyal, returning guests, based solely on questionable accusations, is both unfair and damaging.' Makis added Susan even complained to staff about the weather while she was there, and was 'sarcastic and dismissive'. Susan allegedly complained about not having a second key for the room she shared with her daughter, but the manager said this was taken off of her after 'it was used solely to keep the electricity running – leaving the air conditioning on 24 hours a day, even with open windows and the room unoccupied'. More Trending To be fair to Susan, the hotel's TripAdvisor page shows that she is not the only disgruntled holiday maker at the Lido Corfu Sun Hotel. In May alone, five out of the six reviews gave one-star reviews with titles like 'good luck', 'absolutely disgusting', 'don't go', and 'close this hotel down'. Among their complaints are issues about food, that it is too far from 'Corfu town', and broken toilet seats. Tui said: 'We are sorry to hear that Mrs Edwards felt dissatisfied with her holiday. We have been in touch directly with Mrs Edwards to come to a resolution.' Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@ For more stories like this, check our news page. Victoria Beckham suffers another blow as fresh feud emerges amid Brooklyn drama

Fashion designer Victoria Beckham's world has been rocked by her ongoing family drama with eldest son Brooklyn Beckham as the Spice Girls try to put a reunion plan together Victoria Beckham is said to have been wrapped up in even more drama as she comes to terms with her eldest son Brooklyn Beckham distancing himself from their famous family. The fashion designer, 51, has seen her beloved family hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons. She has been left hurt by the ongoing feud with her son and his wife Nicola Peltz, that all came to blows when the young couple skipped David Beckham's 50th birthday celebrations. Since then, there has been a stark divide in the Beckham clan amid fears there's "no way back" for them. ‌ Amidst the drama, it seems Victoria has another issue at hand as her Spice Girls bandmates plan to reunite. The iconic girl group will mark their 30th anniversary next year, with bosses keen to get the band back together. ‌ It seems Mel C, Mel B and Emma Bunton are all on board, while Geri and Victoria have taken a little longer to persuade. Reports now claim that Geri is keen for an ABBA-style avatar of the band that will create a virtual show for fans. Victoria is said to have been left out of discussions and would not be part of the virtual band. A source told the Daily Mail:"There will be a Spice Girls reunion and all the details are now being debated by everyone apart from Victoria." They claimed Geri "isn't interested in coming back and doing a tour" but the virtual idea has "tempted her". Their former manager, Simon Fuller, is reportedly the brains behind the new plan. Although Victoria opted out of their 2019 tour, other insiders have said she's open to the new approach as long as all the other members are on board. Another insider shared to The Sun.: 'Simon is eager to pull off one final spectacle with the Spice Girls, and this is his latest brainchild. He was the mastermind behind ABBA's groundbreaking digital shows and believes this strategy would suit the Spice Girls perfectly. ‌ "Touring again seems doubtful - Victoria, for instance, isn't likely to return as a full-time member - so this could be their best chance to reunite.' Victoria herself previously voiced support for a virtual Spice Girls residency. When asked on American television in 2022 about the idea, she responded: 'That is a great idea.' However, Victoria received a huge boost this week as husband David is finally getting a knighthood in the King's Birthday Honours list next week after year after years of waiting. ‌ In her home life, the feud continues to rumble on despite son Romeo Beckham splitting from his girlfriend Kim Turnbull. Insiders have said it would take a 'small miracle at present' for peace to break out between Brooklyn and his parents David and Victoria. It comes as his wife Nicola 's friends previously blamed Kim for them not going to David's 50th. Pals alleged it was because Brooklyn had a brief romantic liaison with her, which was denied by Beckham's friends. 'There are no signs of reconciliation, sadly. There is still a lot of hurt to process,' a source told us. Sources close to Nicola have previously insisted that as 'an outsider coming into the Beckham family, she has helped Brooklyn see the emotional abuse and toxic behaviour within'. The claims cut deep as a source said: 'It was a low, low can you say such things about your own family. It will be interesting to see if Brooklyn and Nicola make any attempt to heal things now Kim is out of the picture.' The Mirror has contacted the Spice Girls and Victoria's representatives for comment.

Dakota Johnson left feeling 'incredible pain' after split with Chris Martin

Dakota Johnson, who was in the popular Fifty Shades film series, was in a relationship with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin for nearly eight years until their split Dakota Johnson is has been left feeling "incredible pain" amid her split from Chris Martin, it is said. The 35-year-old actress, who was in the Fifty Shades film series and last year's Madame Web, was reportedly determined to make the relationship work but, after almost eight years together, the pair confirmed they've gone their separate ways. They found their relationship, which began in 2017, stalled, a source said. ‌ But the split is believed to have hit Dakota hard. A source told The Sun: "Dakota wanted this relationship to work. She not only loves Chris, but his two kids, and that loss feels incredibly painful. The decision to end things was amicable, but Dakota is finding it hard. Over the past year, it became clear that their relationship had stalled and wasn't moving forwards." ‌ Coldplay's epic world tour continues and Dakota has been away on shoots for upcoming films Materialists and Verity recently. It is thought their flourishing careers have provided challenges for their relationship. "Settling down, as in Chris properly taking his foot off the pedal, isn't going to happen. And, ultimately, it was one of the many straws that broke the back of them," the source continued. A sombre Dakota was last pictured in New York City on Wednesday hours before the split news broke, and without her engagement ring. However, the couple were hit by split rumours in August last year, speculation sources close to them denied. But now that decision has been reached with an insider confirming the "relationship had been over for a long time". Speaking earlier this week, the insider added: "They just haven't been able to figure out to make it official. Dakota held a flame for them to be together because she loved him so much and loved his kids so much. "Breakups aren't instant and they continued to breakup and makeup and sometimes things would work when they were away from each other, while they were working because absence makes the heart grow fonder, but then they'd get back together and little things just kept adding up to where they weren't right for each other anymore... Dakota is devastated that she isn't going to be around his kids as much anymore, but wants them to know that she is always there for them." Chris, 48, shares those two children with actress Gwyneth Paltrow, whom he married in December 2003. They divorced in 2016, a split Gwyneth described as "conscious uncoupling". The Grammy Award nominee, 52, has since gone on to marry writer and producer Brad Falchuk, whom Gwyneth met on the set of Glee when she had a recurring guest role in the musical comedy-drama.
