The sixth edition of the King Hamad Award for Agricultural Development will introduce a major shift in eligibility criteria, with the use of agricultural technology now made mandatory for all participants.
H.E. Shaikha Maram bint Isa Al Khalifa, Secretary General of the National Initiative for Agricultural Development, announced the changes as part of broader efforts to modernise the Kingdom's agricultural sector and ensure that the award remains aligned with global best practices.
Updated criteria
In previous editions, technology use gave participants an edge through bonus points. Starting this cycle, however, integration of agri-tech solutions is no longer optional.
Agricultural technology adoption has been shown to increase productivity by over 20% in small-scale farms across the GCC, according to UN FAO research. These updates aim to make the award more rigorous and forward-focused.
The move reflects a growing consensus that sustainability and productivity must be driven by innovation and smart farming tools. H.E. Shaikha Maram confirmed that evaluation criteria are being revised, and new judging panels are being set up to enhance standards and review past cycles.
Support and inclusion
H.E. Shaikha Maram reaffirmed the initiative's commitment to supporting all individuals and organisations working toward agricultural advancement. While transformation takes time, she encouraged widespread participation, noting that the award welcomes contributions from across the spectrum of the agricultural ecosystem.
SMEs recognised
H.E. Shaikha Maram also highlighted the increasing role of small and medium-sized agricultural companies in the Kingdom. These businesses, which now receive recognition under separate categories for production and agricultural services, are becoming vital to ensuring the sector's long-term sustainability.
The changes are expected to raise the bar for excellence and broaden the award's impact on the Kingdom's food security and innovation landscape.

'Safeguarding workers' rights and promoting decent jobs are not just values, they are engines of development,' H.E. the minister said, reflecting on the conference theme, 'Forging the Link Between Jobs, Rights, and Economic Growth.' Integrated reforms H.E. the minister outlined a series of reforms and legal initiatives underway in Bahrain to protect trade union freedoms, support social dialogue, and strengthen workplace safety. The Minister drew attention to Bahrain's Tier 1 status in the US Department of State's Trafficking in Persons Report for the seventh consecutive year, calling it an international recognition of the Kingdom's effective and proactive efforts to combat exploitation. His Excellency Khalaf also noted the complete absence of child labour in the Kingdom, the country's anti-discrimination protections, and the rollout of updated occupational health and safety standards. Youth and women H.E. Also stressed that Bahrain's labour vision also prioritises inclusion, with programmes aimed at increasing youth participation in the labour market and promoting the advancement of women in the workforce. Khalaf praised the report by ILO Director-General Gilbert F. Houngbo and echoed its call to see workers' rights as integral to economic resilience.

TDT | Manama Bahrain's brightest young innovators are set to represent the Kingdom on the regional stage in Egypt this November, after topping INJAZ Bahrain's 17th Young Entrepreneurs Competition. Held at Crowne Plaza Bahrain, the event brought together more than 1,000 students from schools and universities nationwide, who pitched bold business ideas in a high-stakes entrepreneurial contest. Winning teams will now compete in the INJAZ Al-Arab Regional Young Entrepreneurs Competition in Cairo. Bold ideas The national-level contest featured 20 student-led companies formed under INJAZ Bahrain's flagship Company Programme, giving participants the chance to launch real businesses and build investor-ready products and services. This year's edition also marked the organisation's 20th anniversary, underscoring two decades of commitment to equipping youth with business acumen and leadership skills. Cash, celebration and a grand prize
TDT | Manama Al Baraka Islamic Bank marked Eid Al Adha with a celebration of loyalty and good fortune, awarding its June Grand Prize worth USD 120,000 and naming 50 additional winners of Eid cash rewards under its Al Barakat Investment Account programme. The headline prize, structured as a monthly salary of USD 10,000 for one full year, went to Mr. Sayed Hadi Mohsen Alawi. His name was drawn in a public raffle held at the bank's Bahrain Bay headquarters, where customers, auditors, and officials from the Ministry of Industry and Commerce were present. Branch visitors also took part in the process by helping randomly select winners. Banking with rewards Alongside the main winner, 50 Al Barakat customers received Eid Al Adha cash prizes of USD 500 each. The festive timing and scale of the draw underscored the Bank's message of inclusivity, customer appreciation, and community celebration. Chief Retail Officer Mazin Dhaif noted that the Al Barakat Account continues to turn clients' savings into opportunities.
