BBC News14 hours ago
Hosting the Tall Ships Races is making Aberdeen "proud", organisers have said. The four-day event - described as Scotland's biggest tourist event this year - began on Saturday, with hundreds of thousands of people expected to see the dozens of majestic vessels from around the world.Monday is the last full day, before Tuesday sees the Parade of Sail as the vessels leave port, heading for Norway.Martin Greig, chairman of the Aberdeen Tall Ships organising committee, said: "It has been inspiring to see the passion and fun shared by residents and visitors. This event lifts the spirits and makes you proud of what we can achieve together."
Deacon Blue kicked off the event on Friday night with a harbourside gig.
The main Tall Ships event then opened to the public on Saturday morning, followed a classical concert in the evening.
Sunday saw the Tall Ships Races crews parade through city streets.
On Monday, local chef Kevin Dalgleish was on board one of the ships, teaching young cadets how to cook. They used local shellfish to put together a lunch at sea. "I'm hugely passionate about nurturing young talent and helping to bring up the next generation of world-class chefs," he said.
"So to be able to teach these young cadets some cooking skills aboard the TS Royalist feels like the perfect fit."He added: "Tall Ships has been a hugely anticipated event for the city and the region, and is really helping to establish Aberdeenshire as a top travel destination."
Rock band Kaiser Chiefs will play a gig on Monday night.Tall Ships Aberdeen is billed as Europe's largest free family event, with almost 50 ships taking part.About 2,000 international crew members are attending from as far afield as Uruguay and Oman.
The races are designed to encourage international friendship and training for young people in the art of sailing. The ships are berthed in Waterloo Quay, Regent Quay, Trinity Quay, Upper Quay, Jamieson's Quay and Blaikies Quay. Girlfriend's tribute to 'inspirational' ice hockey star killed in horror Ibiza fall

Gary Kelly, from Dundee, died instantly in the fall at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel during the early hours of Monday morning, July 21, with his devastated girlfriend leading tributes The heartbroken girlfriend of a Scottish ice hockey star who tragically died after falling from an Ibiza hotel has paid tribute to her "inspiring" late boyfriend. ‌ Gary Kelly, a talented sportsman from Dundee, tragically lost his life in a fall at Ibiza Rocks during the early hours of Monday morning, July 21. Despite two ambulances rushing to the scene, paramedics sadly confirmed there was nothing they could do to save him. ‌ This same hotel has now seen four tourists fall to their deaths while staying at the establishment in recent months. Louise Essery, the 19-year-old's girlfriend, shared a touching tribute to Gary, whom she described as inspirational in every aspect of his life. ‌ Taking to Facebook with a poignant statement, Louise told loved ones that she would "remember the good times" and "celebrate the love he brought into their lives." She penned: "I never thought I would be sat here writing a goodbye. For those who knew Gary, oh you were so lucky. His passion and dedication was inspiring, whether in hockey, work, or with loved ones. I'm struggling to understand how you are no longer with me. ‌ "It hasn't really hit me yet. Gary taught and showed me valuable lessons that I'll carry with me forever. I think it's important to remember the good times and to celebrate the love he brought into our lives." She went on: "Everything feels heavy, and words can't express the love I have for Gary. I wish you could see how much you are loved. Even though our experiences together have paused, the memories we made will stay with me forever. I miss you so much already. "Thank you for the kind messages about Gary; they mean a lot. I love you forever and always, Gary Kelly." ‌ Spanish authorities confirmed in a statement that they were alerted to the incident at around 12.40am, reports the Daily Record. An investigation has been initiated following the most recent fatality at the hotel. Evan Thomson, from Aberdeen, tragically lost his life just two weeks ago at the same four-star hotel. The 26-year-old, who was on holiday with a mate celebrating his birthday, fell to his death on July 7. ‌ Gary, who played ice hockey for both Dundee Stars and Aberdeen Lynx last season, was remembered as a "hugely talented and charismatic individual". His sister, Kharis Kelly, also left a heartfelt tribute saying: "Our hearts are shattered beyond words. Our handsome boy has gone to the other side, Absolutely no words. We are asking everyone to respect our privacy as a family while we try to navigate through this tragic news. You'll forever be our boy Gary, Sleep tight." ‌ A spokesman for the Spanish Civil Guard added: "The fall could be accidental based on the early information obtained from cameras but as part of the investigation possible witnesses will need to be located and interviewed. The results of the post-mortem will also be important to the investigation." On Monday, bosses at Ibiza Rocks said they were "deeply shocked and devastated" following the latest tragedy as they suspended all events at the hotel. A spokesperson stated: "Our priority is to support those affected and their loved ones during this incredibly difficult time, and to fully assist the authorities with their investigations. "The safety and wellbeing of our guests has, and always will remain, our highest priority. Given the seriousness of the situation and out of respect for those involved, we believe it is right to pause our advertised events programme at this time."
