Sainsbury's product's price rises by whopping 17 per cent more than rivals

Daily Mirror3 days ago
Our weekly shop comparison looks at a basket of eight items across six main supermarkets each week - and one store has been top of the list for three weeks
A supermarket is charging 17 per cent more for a staple item compared to nearly all other retailers. Our weekly price comparison examines the cost of eight items across the six main supermarkets. One product - a 500g pack of the cheapest supermarket mince (either 20 per cent or 25 per cent fat) - has seen a steady price increase, but now Sainsbury's is selling it for 17% more than Aldi, Lidl, Asda and Morrisons, and 13 per cent more than Tesco.

Most places offer their cheapest pack for £2.99 - a staggering 77 per cent increase from the lowest price (£1.69) at which it was sold at Aldi when we began tracking prices over three years ago.

Back then, Sainsbury's was still charging 50 per cent less than its current price, with a tag of £2. However, Sainsbury's price has now reached £3.50, the highest it's been throughout our comparison.
With an overall bill of £13.90, it remains the priciest supermarket for the third week running.
Aldi continues to be the most affordable for the fifth week, with a total of £13.09, just a penny less than Lidl's £13.10. Asda is now the third cheapest at £13.33, followed by Tesco at £13.46 and Morrisons at £13.55.

Despite being the most affordable option, Aldi has contested our comparison, arguing that the list doesn't consider quality differences, claiming, for instance, that its Diplomat Red Label tea bags and coffee are 'higher quality' than the comparative products used. The retailer also notes that its tins of beans are weightier than some competitors'.
When it comes to meat, however, Aldi and Lidl, as well as Morrisons, offer a 25% fat pack, while other supermarkets provide 20% fat, which is generally regarded as better quality.
An Aldi spokesperson further commented: "Our promise to customers is that they will make significant savings every time they shop with Aldi, which is why we've been named Which? Cheapest Supermarket of the Year for four years running."

Asda has also expressed disagreement, stating that our limited selection of items doesn't capture the full scope of their pricing or take into account their special offers. The supermarket maintains that its Just Essentials range is the most extensive and economical on the market, comparable to Aldi's.
Sainsbury's has highlighted that industry-wide factors have affected beef prices. A Sainsbury's representative remarked: "This review of a limited number of products does not reflect the fantastic value our customers will find at Sainsbury's. We are committed to offering the best possible value across a wide variety of products – whether that's through our value Stamford Street range, Low Everyday Prices, Aldi Price Match or Nectar Prices."

I tested Aldi's viral fish wine and it's all I want to drink

The supermarket giant's Baron Amarillo Rías Baixas Albariño (75cl) went viral last year upon its initial release, selling out quickly. It became an instant cult favourite among shoppers and experts alike, with the white wine being described as "absolutely gorgeous". Wine connoisseurs Tom Gilbey and The Wine Wally (Liam D'Arcy) took to social media upon its release last year to share their thoughts on the 'fish wine'. Tom Gilbey said: "If you want peaches, nectarines and white flowers, you can get them for well under ten quid.' While The Wine Wally added: "If you like really crisp, refreshing white wines, this is the one, I'm telling you.' Shoppers also praised Aldi's Baron Amarillo Rías Baixas Albariño, with this person commenting: 'It's absolutely gorgeous. One of the nicest wines I've had in a long time!' The Aldi wine gets its 'fishy' name due to the fact that there is a fish on the bottle, and it pairs well with seafood. Upon its return last week (July 14), I decided to give Aldi's viral 'fish wine' a try to see if it lives up to the hype. My take on Aldi's 'fish wine' - does it live up to the hype? I can confirm, Aldi's Baron Amarillo Rías Baixas Albariño (£8.99) most certainly does live up to the high praise heaped on it. Aldi's viral 'fish wine' definitely lives up to the hype. (Image: Patrick Glover) I am not a white wine drinker at all, but I found myself going back for a second and a third glass in quick succession. My wife, who is a white drinker, tried the wine with me, and between us, we polished the bottle off within a few hours over tea. Aldi's 'fish wine' had a lovely fruity taste to it, making it extremely moreish and drinkable. The bottle says it is a dry wine, but we found it to be sweet, offering a lovely, refreshing finish. To the nose, it gives off a clean, crisp aroma. RECOMMENDED READING: Aldi's Baron Amarillo Rías Baixas Albariño is available now at Aldi stores across the UK for £8.99, and is worth every penny. I can see why it has received such rave reviews and sold out so quickly upon its initial release last year. So do yourself a favour, next time you are in Aldi, grab a bottle of Baron Amarillo Rías Baixas Albariño, you won't be disappointed.

Little-known way to get half-price food from Sainsbury's, Asda and Morrisons

With food bills set to rise by an average of £275 this year, everyone will be looking for ways to cut costs on groceries. And while you can try and do this by visiting the UK's cheapest supermarket for your weekly food shop, there's also a little known way to save 50% when ordering items from the likes of Sainsbury's, Asda or Morrisons for a top up. If you find yourself reaching for Deliveroo on days where you just can't be bothered to go out, then you'll want to keep reading. That's because the delivery app has launched a new deal that allows customers to bag themselves half-price food. The Fridge Filler Monday offer is live every Monday and allows shoppers to save 50% on selected fresh and chilled items from Sainsbury's, Co-op, Asda, Iceland, Morrisons and more. This includes everything from fruit and vegetables to meat, fish, poultry, dairy, eggs, bakery and products like ready meals. Discounts are available nationwide and the best part is that there's no minimum spend requirement to use it. But there is a bit of a catch. The T&Cs state that only 90% of customers are eligible for the offer, so while it's the vast majority, not everyone is able to use it. Savvy shopper Lauren Kaye (@_thekayfamily on TikTok) shared a look at an order she'd placed using the Fridge Filler offer at Iceland. The total came to £18 and included part-baked baguettes, bananas, soft pittas, a tiger bloomer, a pineapple, crisps, frozen pizzas, TGI Fridays potato skins, chicken breast fillets and Lurpak butter. For Lauren, the butter was the real standout of her shop, as she managed to nab the 'absolute bargain' for 'just a quid'. Deliveroo isn't the only platform with a similar offer, as Uber Eats also has a Fresh Mondays promotion, which allows customers to buy half-price fruit and vegetables (selected items) at the start of each week. Supermarkets that are featured in this deal including Sainsbury's, Co-op, Iceland, Asda and Morrisons. The discount is automatically applied at checkout, but delivery and service fees still apply. Just Eat doesn't have a consistent weekly promotion, however they do sometimes run Half Price Wednesday offers. So it's worth checking the app to see what's available. If you'd prefer to still head to the supermarket to stock up on groceries, instead of ordering on an app, then there are still some ways to save money this summer, as Aldi and Iceland are offering millions of families money off their weekly shop. Iceland and The Food Warehouse are offering a great way to get money off your weekly shop, from June 30, until August 30, 2025. The supermarkets will be accepting free school meal vouchers to get you money off your groceries. The money you get off your shop is dependent on the monetary value of your free school meal vouchers, which varies depending on your council, but is typically £15 a week. What's more, is if you spend the minimum of £15 of School Meal Gift Cards, then you can get an extra £5 off your shop. More Trending This is as long as you have a registered Iceland and The Food Warehouse Bonus Card. You'll need to scan it in store when completing your shop, and then wait up to seven working days for the £5 bonus to be credited onto your card. Meanwhile, Aldi has launched its Summer Support Scheme which will see vouchers given away every day over the six-week break in July and August. This one is more of a competition format and, to enter, you'll need to send your name and email address to SummerSupportScheme@ to be eligible. View More » Of all the families that do this, one will be chosen at random each day to receive a £50 voucher to spend in store. There are a total of 62 vouchers up for grabs.
