
IIT-Bombay leads push for India-centric AI
The effort is part of BharatGen, a multilingual large language model (LLM) initiative led by IIT Bombay and funded by the Department of Science and Technology. So far, BharatGen has contributed 16 India centric datasets and launched 21 AI models on AIKosh. The initiative includes top institutions such as the International Institute of Information Technology in Hyderabad and the IITs of Kanpur, Mandi, Madras, Hyderabad, Indore.
IIT Bombay's datasets are designed to build a solid foundation for developing Indian AI tools and applications. These include over 218,000 sentences for improving digitisation of Sanskrit texts, audio-visual data on practical skills like upcycling discarded materials into toys and organic farming, English-Sanskrit translations with 53,000 sentences for modern prose, over 78 hours of Sanskrit audio for speech recognition, multilingual question-answer sets in 11 Indian languages, including Hindi and English, math word problems in Hindi and English for AI reasoning, and table detection datasets in 14 Indian languages.
The datasets include visual question answering models (a system capable of answering questions related to an image), datasets to improve translation accuracy and recognize text in videos, a comprehensive overview of Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS), cross-lingual video and text retrieval in seven Indian languages (allowing AI to retrieve relevant information when the document is written in a different language from the query), and handwritten and printed text detection datasets.
These datasets and models are part of a broader effort by IIT Bombay and BharatGen to build sovereign AI models for India aligned with the India AI Mission, a central government initiative that aims to build an ecosystem that allows AI innovation by enhancing data quality and facilitating computer access. The team is not just fine-tuning existing models, but training new ones from scratch using Indian data. They are also building benchmarks to test these models for Indian use in conversation and education.
A major highlight of this initiative is the launch of 'Param 1', a bilingual foundational language model with 2.9 billion parameters. It supports both English and Hindi and has been trained on 36% Indic language data—significantly more than international models like Meta's Llama, which had less than 0.01%.
'Pre-training (the initial stage of training a machine learning model on a large dataset) is an enormous undertaking and often a barrier for many. That's why we've taken on this challenge,' professor Ramakrishnan, lead of BharatGen. Developers can now fine-tune Param 1 to build Indic chatbots, copilots (virtual assistants for research), and knowledge systems. 'We hope our efforts toward creating a sovereign Generative AI ecosystem and milestones such as the release of such LLM model checkpoints, serves as a foundation for India-specific solutions,' said professor Ramakrishnan.
Alongside Param 1, BharatGen has launched over 20 speech models across 19 Indian languages. These include speaker adaptive text-to-speech (TTS) systems that can mimic a speaker's voice in languages like Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, and Bengali. Advanced speaker-conditioned TTS models and automatic speech recognition systems have also been developed to make voice-based applications more natural and inclusive.
'Our goal is not just to build AI models but to provide resources that startups and system integrators can leverage,' said professor Ramakrishnan.

Recognising the wide linguistic and regional diversity of India, DoT has expanded the app's accessibility by supporting English, Hindi, and 21 regional of fraudulent calls and messages has been made even more seamless, with users now able to file reports directly from their call and SMS logs in just a few the time of its launch, the Sanchar Saathi initiative has led to the recovery of over 5.35 lakh lost or stolen mobile handsets, the disconnection of more than 1 crore unauthorised mobile connections based on citizen reports, and the deactivation of over 29 lakh mobile numbers flagged through the Chakshu Sanchar Saathi Portal has witnessed over 16.7 crore visits, reflecting the growing public trust in this citizen-centric digital has also implemented the Financial Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI), which assesses and categorizes mobile numbers based on their association with financial fraud risk. This tool enables banks, NBFCs, and UPI service providers to take proactive actions to protect a result, 34 financial institutions have frozen 10.02 lakh bank accounts/payment wallets, and imposed debit/credit restrictions on 3.05 lakh accounts, based on FRI on the success of the portal launched on 16th May 2023, DoT introduced the Sanchar Saathi Mobile App on January 17 2025, offering users direct and convenient access to telecom security app, available on both Android and iOS platforms, empowers users to protect their telecom identity and take swift action against potential Sanchar Saathi initiative exemplifies Jan Bhagidari–citizen participation in governance. Reports submitted by users play a crucial role in preventing the misuse of telecom resources for cybercrime and financial frauds. MakeMyTrip launches AI-enabled travel agent Myra
Online travel booking platform MakeMyTrip has introduced an AI-powered virtual travel agent that can guide users through every step of their journey on the website, from trip planning and booking to handling post-sales queries such as cancellations and refunds, via both voice and text. Users can ask complex and open-ended queries in the realm of travel in Hindi or English like 'Where can I go in August for a relaxing holiday with my kids?,' or 'I want to go to south India to cover Madurai, Rameswaram, Kovalam, Kodaikanal. Can you suggest me the best route? But I don't want to travel via flight'. The virtual assistant Myra is built on a network of specialised AI agents across all major travel categories, flights, accommodation, holidays, ground transport, visas, and forex. It supports multimodal input (text, voice, image, video), continuous back-and-forth dialogue, itinerary edits, and post-sales support — all within the same interface. Myra will gives user personalised answers based on up-to-date availability, prices, and relevance. MakeMyTrip claims that while most AI travel tools only offer suggestions to users, this tool goes a step further by helping users move from travel ideas to actually helping travellers book their travel and complete payment online – something that hasn't been tried before. It will offer assistance not just with flights and hotels but also holiday planning, ground transport such as cabs and buses, visas and forex. CEO Rajesh Magow said such digital innovations helped 'reach the deepest corners, and bringing seamless, intelligent travel booking to those who have long been underserved by digital platforms.' 'MakeMyTrip has seen travel demand penetration grow deeper over the years, from metro to top 15 cities many years ago to now as many as 2,000 unique cities,' he told The Hindu. The portal commands more than 50% market share among all online travel booking portals. Myra may be able to facilitate bookings for an individual but it lacks the complexities of negotiating, handling customer bargains, accounting for individual preferences for a group bookings like a human travel agent, or helping during a travel emergency. 'Even if AI is able to do 50% of a human tour manager's work, there will still be room for workforce in other tasks and AI related human intervention,' he added. The tool is currently available in Hindi and English and will be expanded to include other regional languages too. It is currently available in beta version which will be released to a limited group of real users for testing before the official launch. Group Chief Technology Officer Sanjay Mohan called the product 'the most ambitious build' undertaken by the company. In the next stage, MakeMyTrip will add smarter search tools that can understand the meaning behind what you're looking for, even from images and videos. This means one won't have to rely only on fixed filters and can search in a more intuitive manner. The system will be able to pick up on subtle travel needs, making it easier and more personal to find what you want.
