Petawawa shooting investigation leads to 8 arrests, major drug seizure
Eight people are facing charges that include drug trafficking and conspiracy to commit murder as part of an investigation into gunfire earlier this year at a Petawawa, Ont., apartment building.
Ontario Provincial Police officers were called to the Wolfe Avenue building on March 22 after getting a report someone had fired a gun in the hallway.
In a news release Saturday, OPP said their investigation revealed the shooter had targeted the wrong residence.
No one was injured, they added.
While that suspect remains on the loose, eight other people were arrested after police executed search warrants in Ontario and Quebec on June 5, OPP said.
Major drug seizure
The warrants resulted in a major illegal drug haul, with police seizing more than 12 kilograms of fentanyl, more than 15 kilograms of cocaine and roughly 17,000 methamphetamine tablets.
Officers also seized quantities of other drugs, OPP said, along with one real and two fake handguns, ammunition, cash and jewelry.
The eight people charged range in age from 20 to 63. Most are from either eastern Ontario or western Quebec.
Four of the accused have been charged with conspiracy to commit murder. Police have also laid numerous drug and weapons trafficking charges.
Some face as few as two counts, while one of the accused, a 44-year-old man from Gatineau, Que, has been charged with 23 offences.
All but one of the eight remained in custody as of Friday, OPP said.
As for the initial shooting suspect, police said he may be in the Montreal area but they're still trying to locate him.

Search operation underway for man, 20, who possibly drowned at Verdun Beach
Montreal police and firefighters are searching for a 20-year-old man who went missing in the waters of the St. Lawrence River near Verdun Beach on Saturday afternoon. Police say several 911 calls were placed at about 5:20 p.m. concerning a man in distress in the water. When police arrived at the scene, they were unable to locate him from the shore, police spokesperson Caroline Chèvrefils said. Nautical patrols with Montreal police and firefighters are currently on the water. The Canadian Coast Guard has also been called in to help with the search operation, Chèvrefils said. According to preliminary information, the man was partaking in a sporting activity in the water when he started to feel unwell, she said. Police have evacuated the beach and are interviewing witnesses.

Remains of Merritt, B.C., man found 2 years after disappearance
RCMP in the B.C. Interior have confirmed that a Merritt man's body was found more than two years after his disappearance. Miguel Mack was last seen on Feb. 27, 2023. He was reported missing on March 3 when family had not seen or heard from him for several days. On Wednesday, RCMP said that they had learned that his remains had been found and identified in April. Police said that Mack's family had been told of the discovery, but they did not disclose where exactly his remains were found. "The investigation into Miguel Mack's death continues to remain a priority," said Staff Sgt. Jason Smart with the Southeast District Major Crime Unit. "There are people out there with direct and indirect knowledge of Miguel Mack's death and we are asking those individuals to come forward and contact the police." The major crime unit had been looking into Mack's disappearance in 2023, saying that it was suspicious and involved criminality. Mack's brother told CBC News in 2023 that family and friends had been searching for the Nuxalk man since he went missing. Volunteers had covered much of the Nicola Valley in the search, and it reached as far as Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, Victoria, Bella Coola and Prince George. Mack was described as an athlete with a love for soccer, basketball, and slo-pitch.

Suspect at large in fatal Hobbs shooting
HOBBS, N.M. (KRQE) – Hobbs police are asking the public for help in tracking down the suspect of a deadly shooting. Officers were called to the area of East Lincoln Road and Dal Paso to reports of shots fired. They located two gunshot victims; one was transported to the hospital and has since been released, and the second was identified as 19-year-old Ismael Rios. He was declared dead on the scene. Las Cruces Police release images of suspected vehicle involved in deadly shooting Investigators identified the suspect as 20-year-old Michael Alonzo Wynne Garcia. Police found him a few blocks away, but he fled the scene and remains at large. Garcia has been charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery, and aggravated fleeing an officer.
