H.E Abdallah Sultan Al Owais, Vice Chairman of the Federation of UAE Chambers of Commerce and Industry and Chairman of SCCI, extended a warm welcome to the Malian trade delegation visiting the UAE from 13 to 18 August. He praised the growing bilateral relations between the two friendly countries and emphasized that the investment opportunities on offer present strong appeal for Emirati investors, especially within the framework of the UAE's economic diversification strategy. Al Owais affirmed the commitment of the UAE Chambers, and specifically the Sharjah Chamber, to actively promote these opportunities among their business communities to encourage investment in Mali, pointing out that they cover a wide range of sectors. He emphasized the UAE business community's growing interest in exploring Mali's investment environment, underlining the UAE Chambers' commitment to strengthen cooperation with their Malian counterparts in the coming period. He pointed out plans to sign a memorandum of understanding aimed at establishing a joint business council that will serve as a structured platform for direct engagement between private sector representatives from both sides. The council will focus on strategic sectors such as agriculture, food security, infrastructure, energy, and mining. Al Owais voiced his optimism that the UAE-Mali Business Forum would serve as a catalyst for expanded trade and investment cooperation between the UAE and Mali. Real Estate Developers urge flexible land pricing, streamlined licensing, and dollar-based transactions

The Association of Real Estate Developers (arD) convened this week to address the mounting challenges facing Egypt's property market, underscoring the need for urgent regulatory reforms and greater flexibility to sustain growth. Developers stressed the importance of focusing on completing existing projects rather than launching new ones that could exceed their financial capacity. They highlighted that bottlenecks in land allocation and pricing remain among the most pressing issues for market stability. One of the key concerns raised was the complexity of Egypt's current licensing framework. Developers noted that securing approvals for administrative and commercial projects requires clearance from more than 14 different entities — a process they described as cumbersome and discouraging for investors. To address this, developers called for the unification of regulatory bodies responsible for issuing construction permits, proposing the establishment of a 'one-stop shop' to streamline approvals. Such a step, they argued, would speed up construction timelines, reduce investment risks, and enhance the sector's overall competitiveness. Participants also pointed to the need for greater flexibility in granting permits, stressing that residential, touristic, and commercial projects each require tailored government facilitation. Revisiting land pricing mechanisms was another priority raised during the discussions. Developers cautioned that abrupt changes in land valuation disrupt feasibility studies and financial planning, creating instability across the sector. The recent decision to revoke licenses in certain cases was also flagged as a source of added uncertainty. The association further criticised the blanket policy of pricing land exclusively in US dollars. While acknowledging that foreign currency financing may sometimes be necessary, they warned that tying all land values to the dollar reduces competitiveness and discourages local investors. Instead, they called for more flexible mechanisms that better reflect domestic economic realities. At the same time, developers urged the government to authorise foreign currency sales of property units, allowing transactions in dollars or euros rather than restricting them to the Egyptian pound. They cited Saudi Arabia as a model, where foreign investors are permitted to purchase property without being obliged to pay in local currency. On financing, developers pushed back against the perception that high interest rates directly lead to lower property prices. Rising construction and development costs, they argued, continue to offset any potential downward pressure on prices. The association concluded that resolving these issues — from licensing and land pricing to flexible currency options — is vital to reinforcing the resilience of Egypt's real estate market and sustaining investor confidence.

Egypt, Japan discuss economic ties, preparations for TICAD conference

Egyptian and Japanese officials have discussed strengthening their economic relations and preparations for the upcoming Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD), Egypt's planning ministry said. Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation, Rania Al-Mashat, met with Japanese Ambassador to Cairo, Fumio Iwai, and the chief representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Egypt, Ebisawa Yu, the ministry said in a statement on Sunday. Al-Mashat praised the economic and development relations between the two countries, which span more than 70 years, and highlighted the elevation of bilateral ties to a strategic partnership during the visit of former Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to Egypt in April 2023. The officials discussed various aspects of their cooperation, particularly in sectors prioritised by the Egyptian government, including education, health, human capital investment, and the green economy transition. They also expressed their anticipation for the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum in early November and reaffirmed their commitment to completing the fourth phase of the Greater Cairo Metro. With the 9th edition of TICAD scheduled for Aug. 20-22, Al-Mashat emphasized the conference's importance in strengthening African-Japanese relations and creating constructive partnerships to advance development in Africa. She underscored the importance of exploring new opportunities for trilateral economic and investment cooperation between Egypt, Japan, and African countries, particularly in renewable energy. The minister also reaffirmed the government's aspiration to increase investments and participation by the Japanese private sector, JICA, and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) to support development financing for the private sector in Egypt. Japan is one of Egypt's most important Asian development partners, with a current cooperation portfolio of about 18 development projects. The total technical support and grants provided by Japan amount to approximately $2.4 billion, in addition to development financing of approximately $7.2 billion in various fields, the ministry said.
