Ronit Roy reveals reason he quit alcohol: ‘I have this phobia…'

Indian Express3 days ago

For Ronit Roy, alcohol is not a pleasurable indulgence. It's been years since he has touched it, and in a candid conversation, the actor, who rose to fame with Kasautii Zindagii Kay, stressed that he quit alcohol for logical reasons. 'Alcohol makes you wake up dizzy. I don't like it anymore. I like to be up and about. Another thing is that you have kids at home, your wife at home,' Roy, 59, said.
He also admitted having a phobia of any emergency and not being able to help. 'I have this phobia inside me. My daughter is studying in Los Angeles. I have this phobia that what if something happens in the night to anybody…either in my family…or my friends who are like my family…and I get a call…and I am not able to react because I am under the influence of alcohol…I don't want that to happen…,' he told Lehren TV.
Dr Kushal Bangar, consultant physician and intensivist, AIMS Hospital, Dombivli, said that alcohol doesn't just affect your judgment, but it also slows your reflexes and clouds your mind.
'Moreover, it weakens your liver over time, making it harder to be the strong, dependable presence your family may one day need. The emotional distance, mood swings, and fog it creates can silently harm relationships and the mental peace of the individual,' said Dr Bangar.
This isn't just about giving up a drink; it's about choosing love over habit, clarity over confusion, and responsibility over risk.
Dr Bangar asserted that one should be responsible enough to handle himself/herself and his/her family members and avoid these risky habits.
'Quitting alcohol strengthens your liver, clears your mind, lifts your mood, and deepens your connection with the people who matter most. If not for yourself, do it for those who count on you,' said Dr Bangar.
Apart from liver cancer, alcohol can lead to heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, digestive issues, and brain damage.
'It also increases the risk of depression, anxiety, and several other types of cancers, like mouth, throat, and breast cancer. It is better to quit alcohol right away and improve the quality of life,' said Dr Bangar.
