Bills' Josh Allen downplays MVP accolade, says winning a championship remains 'the only goal'

Fox News7 hours ago

Last season, Josh Allen produced arguably the best performance of his NFL career.
Shortly after finishing the regular season with 12 rushing touchdowns and 28 passing touchdowns against six interceptions, Allen was named the NFL MVP. Allen recently took a moment to reflect on his personal achievements, but also made it clear that hoisting the coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy remains his primary goal.
"I don't play too much into it," Allen told Sports Illustrated. "You know, it is such a great honor, and I do appreciate being honored for my work. But at the same time, I still didn't win a Super Bowl. Didn't win a ring, and that is the only goal. It's the only focus that I've ever had going into this league."
While the Buffalo Bills have had considerable regular-season success with Allen under center, the star quarterback has helped guide the Bills to six consecutive playoff appearances. The Bills have also won five straight AFC East division titles.
However, the team has come up short in the postseason in the past several years.
This past January's AFC Championship game against the Kansas City Chiefs marked the most recent disappointment for the Bills. Allen came up just inches short on the Bills version of the "tush push" in the fourth quarter, which allowed the Chiefs to hold on for a 32-29 victory.
The Chiefs have managed to eliminate the Bills four times over the past five NFL postseasons.
Allen vowed to continue to put in the necessary work with the hopes of getting Buffalo "over that hump."
"At the end of the day, you got to make the playoffs, and then you got to win three, maybe four games," Allen added. "And that's what we need to do. And we're going to continue to work as hard as we can, and myself included. What can we do to find a way over that hump? So that's the only goal going forward."
It's been more than three decades since the Bills advanced to the Super Bowl. The franchise suffered four consecutive defeats in the big game from 1991-94.
The Bills open the 2025 regular season on Sept. 7 at home against the Baltimore Ravens.

Pirates remove Cruz after he doesn't run out double-play grounder. He says he lost track of the outs

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Pittsburgh's Oneil Cruz said he lost track of the outs when he didn't run out a double-play grounder, a move that led to his removal from the Pirates' 9-3 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night. The Pirates trailed 7-3 and had a runner on first with one out in the seventh when Cruz grounded into a 6-4-3 double play. Cruz slowed down after the Brewers got the force play at second, and he said afterward he believed that was the third out of the inning. Pirates manager Don Kelly removed Cruz in favor of a defensive replacement in the eighth inning and said it was due to Cruz's 'energy and effort going down the line.' Cruz said after the game he understood Kelly's decision. 'DK had all the rights to do what he did, and I'll back him up on that,' Cruz said through an interpreter. 'It was my fault because I thought there were two outs in that situation. That's why I let off running to first base.' Kelly said he explained to Cruz the reason for the benching. 'We talked,' Kelly said. 'He knows the expectation. Right there, I feel we fell a little short.' When he was asked whether Cruz would be back in the starting lineup Wednesday, Kelly was noncommittal. 'We're going to sit down and talk, and we'll figure that out,' Kelly said. Cruz, 26, has batted just .156 (12 of 77) with 31 strikeouts this month after having a productive start to the season that included owning a .911 OPS in early May and hitting a 122.9-mph homer against the Brewers on May 25. That homer was the hardest-hit ball since Statcast started tracking that data in 2015. Cruz is now hitting .208 with a .321 on-base percentage, .404 slugging percentage, 13 homers, 31 RBIs and 26 steals in 71 games. 'He's struggling at the plate right now,' Kelly said. 'It's difficult when you're going through that and trying to figure it out. He's working hard to do that. That's one thing we've got to be mindful of, is not letting that offense carry over to defense and base running, and the energy and effort that we're giving on any other aspects of the game as well.' Cruz said his hitting slump 'had nothing to do with what happened today' and isn't impacting his focus on the basepaths or in the field. But he also said he appreciated Kelly's instructions to him and noted how he can learn from veteran teammates Andrew McCutchen and Tommy Pham. 'They're a really good example,' Cruz said. 'They always run hard. They always go out there to do their 100%. That's a teaching point for me. I accepted the way DK came to me and explained it and presented it to me.' ___ AP MLB:

It's more than just wins and losses—it's about timing, consistency, and life outside the cage. For some, real life eventually calls louder than the roar of the Octagon. A veteran appears to be facing that very fork in the road. Advertisement Cheyanne Vlismas, also known as the 'Warrior Princess,' has officially announced her retirement from the UFC at just 29 years old. In an emotional Instagram post, Vlismas opened up about why she's stepping away from fighting: UFC CEO Dana WhitePhoto by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC 'This decision comes with a lot of heartbreak. But this is something that I need to do... After having my second child, my time is very limited. I am unable to give 100% into my training without giving less of myself to my babies... I'm choosing to be the parent I wish I always had.' Cheyanne VlismasGetty Images Vlismas retires with a professional record of 7-3, including a 3-2 stint in the UFC. After debuting in March 2021 with a loss to Montserrat Ruiz, she quickly rebounded with impressive wins over Gloria de Paula and Mallory Martin. Her last UFC appearance was a December 2022 decision loss to Cory McKenna. Her most memorable moment came after her 22-second TKO over de Paula. In a post-fight interview captured by MMA Junkie, she was visibly emotional and revealed: 'I am negative in my account right now… I've been so broke my whole life because of this sport.' Advertisement The performance earned her a $50,000 bonus from Dana White and the UFC—a high point in a career built on heart and grit. While she didn't fulfill every dream inside the cage, Vlismas leaves behind a legacy of resilience—and steps fully into the role she values most: mother.
