Durand Cup Returns To Manipur's Imphal With Grand Trophy Tour
Imphal celebrated the arrival of the 134th Durand Cup trophies with a grand trophy tour, marking the return of Asia's oldest football tournament to Manipur's capital after a two-year hiatus. The three trophies were displayed at the City Convention Centre, attended by Shri Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Hon'ble Governor of Manipur, who was the Chief Guest. Also present were Shri Prashant Kumar Singh IAS, Chief Secretary, Government of Manipur, and senior military leaders including Lt Gen Mohit Malhotra AVSM SM, Chief of Staff, HQ Eastern Command and Chairman, Durand Cup Organising Committee, Lt Gen Abhijit S. Pendharkar AVSM YSM, General Officer Commanding, 3 Corps, Maj Gen S.S Karthikeya YSM SM, General Officer Commanding, 57 Mountain Division, Maj Gen Ravroop Singh YSM SM, Inspector General, Assam Rifles (South), and Shri Rajiv Singh IPS, DGP Manipur.
The displayed trophies included the Durand Cup, the original prize, the rolling Shimla Trophy (presented by residents of Shimla in 1904), and the President's Cup, which the winners keep permanently.
Shri Ajay Kumar Bhalla remarked, 'Hosting the 134th edition of the Durand Cup tournament once again in Imphal is a testament to our state's deep-rooted passion for football and the collective efforts of both civil and military establishments. I would like to convey my sincere appreciation to the Indian Army, particularly the Eastern Command for bringing this celebrated tournament back to the football-loving land of Manipur. Sports are an integral part of our state's identity. Manipur has always been at the forefront of sporting excellence, producing national heroes and Olympians who have brought immense pride to the nation. I wish the 134th Edition of the Durand Cup great success. I am confident that it will be bigger, better, and more thrilling than ever before. My heartfelt wishes to all the participating teams. May you play with honour, courage, and passion, inspiring countless young hearts along the way".

Lt Gen Abhijit S. Pendharkar added, The Durand Cup, is a tournament steeped in history and tradition, organized under the aegis of the Indian Armed Forces. It serves not only as a celebration of sporting excellence but also as a living tribute to the enduring bond between the military and the people of India. This unique tournament has, over generations, stood as a symbol of camaraderie, discipline, and sportsmanship. I wish to express how truly historic and meaningful it is to witness the Durand Cup, the oldest football tournament in Asia, being hosted once again in the glorious state of Manipur – a land synonymous with resilience, rich culture, and an unshakeable love for football. The trophy tour commenced in the morning from Sendra, passing through Moirang, Bishnupur, Nambol, Keishampat Junction, Singjamei BR, Manipur University, Kangla West Gate, Chingmeirong (War Cemetery), and Lamlong Bazar before arriving at the City Convention Centre.
Eight members of the Women's National team from Manipur, including captain Ngangbam Sweety Devi, Elangbam Panthoi Chanu, Nongmaithem Ratanbala Devi, Hemam Shilky Devi, Grace Dangmei, Phanjoubam Nirmala Devi, and Lynda Serto Kom, who recently qualified for the 2026 AFC Women's Asia Cup, were present at the roadshow flag-off.
What Durand Cup Matches Will Be Played In Manipur?
Six matches will be played in Imphal, with the first match scheduled for 30th July. The Khuman Lampak Stadium will host local teams NEROCA FC and TRAU FC in the Manipur derby. Real Kashmir FC and the Indian Navy Football Team are also in the group.

NEUFC begin preparations ahead of Durand Cup

They have also signed two of I-League's young talents in Mizo players Lalrinzuala Lalbiaknia and Lalbiakdika from Aizawl FC. And the excitement among the fans was evident at the training session which they attended in huge numbers and which began by everyone paying tribute to their star striker Ajaraie's late grandmother. "As defending champions of Durand Cup, we don't have any pressure. For us, the most important game is our first game of the tournament. We play for the Cup in the final, we need to win the final, but to reach the final, we need first to win our first game," Benali added at the press conference. Captain Michel Zabaco, who was joined by local favourite Parthib Gogoi and Redeem Tlang at the interaction, too, spoke of the importance of the three weeks of pre-season training in getting them ready for the title defence. "We have three weeks before we play our first game. We keep working hard to improve. We don't feel any pressure (as defending champions). Season on hold, ISL clubs told
Days before a decision on who should run India's top men's football competition can be expected from the Supreme Court, a letter reached Indian Super League (ISL) clubs informing them that the 2025-26 season has been placed on hold. ISL season runs from September to April. (ISL) Issued by Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL), AIFF's commercial partners and organisers of ISL, the letter informs clubs that since discussions on the 'potential renewal of the MRA (master rights agreement)…remain inconclusive at this time', the season has been 'placed on hold.' HT has a copy of the letter sent on Friday. The letter explains that since the 15-year MRA is due to expire on December 8, 2025, 'approximately one-third of the way through a typical ISL season which runs from September to April', it would not be possible for FSDL to 'effectively plan, organize or commercialise the 2025-26 ISL season.' The decision 'has not been taken lightly,' the letter states. Discussions on the MRA have been stalled following an observation by the Supreme Court bench comprising Justices PS Narasimha and Joymalya Bagchi that no major decision be taken till the verdict on the new AIFF constitution, one that could lead to fresh elections and direct whether the top league should be run by the federation. The hearing ended on April 30. AIFF not agreeing to FSDL's proposals that included a moratorium on promotion and relegation for 10 years and that ISL will be run by a joint-venture company comprising clubs, the federation and its commercial partners too have not helped. HT had reported on the proposals on June 21. The letter has come when six ISL clubs, including 2024-25 double winners Mohun Bagan Super Giant, continue to prepare for the Durand Cup that starts on July 23. And while FC Goa have opted out of the season opener, they are likely to start pre-seasons next week because of the Asian Champions League 2 qualifier against Oman; Al-Seeb on August 13. 'It's considerate of FSDL to keep the clubs informed,' said Mandar Tamhane, CEO of NorthEast United FC. 'What they've communicated isn't entirely new to us. There's a difference between the league being put on hold and the season being cancelled. At NorthEast United FC, we are focused on preparing to defend our Durand Cup title and remain hopeful that there will be clarity soon.' Clubs being active on the transfer market is proof that Tamhane is not alone in thinking this way. Mohun Bagan are rumoured to have signed Punjab FC and India left-back Tekcham Abhishek Singh, Ashique Kuruniyan has reportedly returned to Bengaluru FC and East Bengal have renewed with PV Vishnu and bought players from I-League clubs. And it is not as if only Indian players are being signed. Mumbai City FC have announced the signing of Argentine Jorge Pereyra Diaz from Bengaluru FC.

Next ISL season put on hold, adding to the bleak picture of Indian men's football
The 2025/26 season of the Indian Super League (ISL) has been put on hold amid uncertainty over the renewal of the Master Rights Agreement (MRA) between event organisers Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) and the All India Football Federation (AIFF). The FSDL informed all ISL clubs of the development in a letter on Friday. The ISL usually runs from September to April and the current MRA ends on December 8, 2025, in the third month of the league. The Indian Express has learnt that the FSDL has written to the ISL clubs that it is unable to effectively 'plan, organise, or commercialise' the 2025-26 ISL season. The letter states that while discussions between the two parties over renewal of the MRA were initiated several months ago, they 'remain inconclusive at this time'. The FSDL further says in the letter that it is hence placing the ISL 'on hold until further clarity emerges on the contractual structure beyond the end of current MRA term'. NorthEast United FC CEO Mandar Tamhane confirmed that the club has received the letter from FSDL and stated that what has been communicated isn't 'entirely new' to them. 'It's considerate of FSDL to keep the clubs informed. What they've communicated isn't entirely new to us. There's a difference between the league being put on hold and the season being cancelled. At NorthEast United FC, we are fully focused on preparing to defend our Durand Cup title and remain hopeful that there will be clarity soon,' Tamhane told this paper. The uncertainty around the next ISL season emerged when the tournament, which is now the top-tier of men's football in the country, was conspicuously absent from the AIFF's 2025/26 competition calendar. According to the current MRA which was signed in 2010, the FSDL pays the AIFF Rs 50 crore annually, and in turn gets the rights to broadcast, manage and commercialise various aspects of Indian football, including the national team. Mohun Bagan Super Giant won the 2024/25 season of the ISL, beating Bengaluru FC in the final at Kochi. They had earlier topped the league table as well and this made them the first team to have achieved the double of winning the League Shield and the ISL Trophy in the same season. It was Bagan's second ISL title, having previously won it in 2023. Friday's development comes amid a larger spate of negative news around men's football in the country. AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey, along with most of the federation's leadership, had hosted a lengthy press conference last month, just days after India were beaten by lower-ranked Hong Kong in the third round of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers. However, the top brass evaded questions related to the status of the partnership between AIFF and the FSDL at the time. This was followed closely by the AIFF announcing that they have parted ways with men's national team head coach Manolo Marquez. India have also dropped to 133 in the latest FIFA rankings, their worst position in nine years. In this scenario, the women's team qualifying for the AFC Asian Cup, on merit, is the only good news coming out of Indian football of late.
