Bezzecchi takes pole for Austrian MotoGP as Marc Marquez crashes
The Aprilia rider will start on the front row ahead of Alex Marquez (Ducati-Gresini) and his Italian compatriot Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati), who is third.
Championship leader Marc Marquez was one of several riders to slide off the track and will start from fourth.
Bezzecchi, who was second in the last race in Brno before the summer break, had to go through Q1 qualifying earlier in the morning to reach Q2 where pole position is decided among the 12 fastest riders.
His fastest lap of 1min 28.060 sec was 0.016sec quicker than Alex Marquez who will have to serve a long-lap penalty in Sunday's main race after wiping out Honda's Joan Mir in an accident last time at the Czech MotoGP.
"It's always a surprise when you come from Q1 to Q2 because everyone is super quick. To grab pole is fantastic because yesterday we had some problems," said Bezzecchi.
"Pace-wise it will be tough because I am not as quick as them, the KTMs are really good here. I will try and make a good start and then go out and give my all."
Marc Marquez goes into this 13th round of the 22-race campaign a massive 120 points clear of the pack led by his younger brother. - AFP

Marc Marquez wins Austrian MotoGP for sixth straight victory
MARC MARQUEZ claimed his first-ever victory at the Red Bull Ring in the Austrian MotoGP. The Ducati rider secured his ninth win of the season, further solidifying his lead in the championship standings. Starting fourth on the grid, Marquez overtook pole-sitter Marco Bezzecchi on lap 20 before pulling away for his sixth straight win. Rookie Fermin Aldeguer pushed hard in the closing laps but settled for second, marking his best career finish. Bezzecchi completed the podium in third place after a strong performance. 'Super happy to finally take the first victory here in Austria,' said Marquez. The win also marked a milestone as it came in the 1000th MotoGP race. Marquez had earlier won the sprint race on Saturday despite a poor qualifying session. At 32, he now moves closer to a potential seventh world title, his first since 2019. With 13 rounds completed, Marquez leads his brother Alex by 142 points in the standings. Marquez made a strong start, passing Alex on the first turn and teammate Francesco Bagnaia on lap two. A strategic battle with Bezzecchi followed before Marquez made his decisive move with eight laps remaining. Aldeguer briefly challenged Marquez but ultimately secured second place. 'I waited and attacked near the end,' Marquez explained. Alex Marquez struggled after serving a long-lap penalty for an incident in the Czech MotoGP. He dropped to 11th and finished 10th, unable to recover his position. Reigning champion Jorge Martin crashed out on lap 15, continuing his difficult season. Martin, who will stay with Aprilia next year, has faced multiple setbacks due to injuries. The next race will take place in Hungary next weekend. - AFP

SPIELBERG, Austria: Marc Marquez chalked up his ninth win of the season at the Austrian MotoGP at the Red Bull Ring on Sunday to stretch his lead at the head of the championship standings. The Ducati rider, who started fourth on the grid, swept past pole-sitter Marco Bezzecchi on lap 20, and pulled away for victory. Rookie Fermin Aldeguer closed on him in the final laps but had to settle for second, the best result of his fledgling career, with Bezzecchi completing the podium. Marquez's victory in the 1000th MotoGP race completed a perfect weekend for the Spaniard who, after a poor qualifying that saw him slide off the track, also won his 12th sprint of the season on Saturday. Remarkably for a man who has already won six world titles, this was the first time that he had ever won at Spielberg. After 13 rounds of the 22-race season, Marquez is now 142 points clear of his brother Alex Marquez in the standings.
