US envoy says Israel's turn to ‘comply' as Lebanon moves to disarm Hezbollah

BEIRUT: US envoy Tom Barrack called on Israel to honor its commitments under a ceasefire that ended its war with Hezbollah, after the Lebanese government launched a process to disarm the militant group. Under the truce agreement, weapons in Lebanon were to be restricted to the state and Israel was to fully withdraw its troops from the country, although it has kept forces in five border points it deems strategic. 'I think the Lebanese government has done their part. They've taken the first step. Now what we need is Israel to comply with that equal handshake,' Barrack said following a meeting in Beirut with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun.

US envoy says discussed Hezbollah's weapons with Lebanese president

US envoy Tom Barrack said on Monday that he discussed Hezbollah's arms with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, adding that the Lebanese government took the first step and that Israel now has to follow suit. Aoun met with Barrack and Deputy Special Envoy for the Middle East Morgan Ortagus at the presidential palace. The Lebanese president told Al Arabiya in an interview aired Monday that a US proposal that had been delivered by Barrack included 'Israeli withdrawal and the revival of Lebanon's economy.' Aoun explained that Lebanon had two choices: either accept the American paper or face isolation. 'But we did not receive any threats to implement the proposal's terms,' he added. 'We are waiting for Washington to secure Israel's approval of Tom Barrack's plan.'
