Transfer news LIVE: Arsenal to seal Eze deal, Liverpool's Isak and Guehi wait, Man Utd latest

Daily Mirror8 hours ago
The opening weekend of Premier League matches has given plenty of teams a wake-up call when it comes to summer transfers. And now, as all 20 sides prepare to return to action, work is being done to get those last few deals over the line.
Eberechi Eze has been a man in demand all summer, and the expiry of his release clause hasn't changed that one bit. Tottenham had looked to be in pole position to sign the England international but Arsenal have now stolen a march.
Reigning champions Liverpool have been among the busiest in the league, but they might not be done. Alexander Isak's statement on Tuesday night could accelerate a move to Anfield for the Newcastle star, while a move for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi remains possible.
Unlike Liverpool and Arsenal, Manchester United made a losing start to the campaign. A new central midfielder could be on the cards, even if Carlos Baleba is out of their price range, while they could also rival Manchester City for goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Ruben Amorim has already named 'complete' midfielder Man Utd must sign

Ruben Amorim has already named the player he regards as a 'complete' midfielder as Manchester United seek reinforcements in the middle of the park. United have spent close to £200million rebuilding their attack with the signings of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko this summer. The club are still working on deals to offload Jadon Sancho, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho to help fund a move for a midfielder before the summer transfer window closes on 1 September. United explored a move to sign Carlos Baleba from Brighton, identifying the 21-year-old star as their top target. But the Seagulls' huge asking price, in the excess of £100million, has forced them to shelve those plans until next year. United are still light on options in midfield with Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro starting in the opening game of the season against Arsenal on Sunday. Metro's weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. The Portugal international is not a natural central midfielder with his best work coming further up the pitch with questions over whether Casemiro can withstand the pace of another season in the Premier League. Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo are the club's only other recognised options. While a move for Baleba now looks increasingly unlikely, United are exploring other midfield options. The Premier League side have been credited with interest in Sevilla's Lucien Agoume, linked with Arsenal earlier in the window. Reports also suggest Sporting CP captain Morten Hjulmand is an option being considered – one Amorim thinks very highly of. The Denmark international captained Sporting to another title last season having been signed by the club during Amorim's reign in charge. Hjulmand joined Sporting from Italian side Lecce in the summer of 2023, replacing Manuel Ugarte following his £51million move to Paris Saint-Germain. More Trending Ugarte had two impressive seasons in the Portuguese capital, effectively taking Joao Palhinha's place in the side before replacing him permanently when the Portugal international was sold to Fulham in the summer of 2022. Following Hjulmand's arrival, Sporting went onto win the Portuguese title that season with the Dane playing a key role in midfield. It was Sporting's first title in 19 years and while Amorim 'loved' the industry of Palhinha and Ugarte, he explained at the time he was keen to move away from that type of midfielder, describing Hjulmand as a 'more complete player.' 'The big difference is that we have improved in our organised attack. We had the principles of the first year, when defensively we were very good, but we didn't spend much time in organised attack,' Amorim said. 'We spent a lot of time creating offensive nuances and then we discovered what kind of players we need.' He continued: 'We are always growing and I think we have to be clearer in defending and we have to change some characteristics that will help us in the future. It's a normal evolution and then there's also the merit of scouting. I love Palhinha and Ugarte, but I would say that Hjulmand is the most complete player in his position. I'm certainly no longer their favourite coach, but it's a matter of everyone at the Academy understanding our playing philosophy.' Sheffield Wednesday want Cardiff City star as Barry-Murphy gives verdict on outcast trio

Sheffield Wednesday want Cardiff City star as Barry-Murphy gives verdict on outcast trio Three players appear to have been frozen out, while one is reportedly attracting interest from the Championship Ethan Horvath of Cardiff City celebrates with teammates following the team's victory in the penalty shootout against Stoke (Image: Getty Images) Cardiff City goalkeeper Ethan Horvath has reportedly emerged as a target for Sheffield Wednesday as the Championship club scramble to solve their growing goalkeeping crisis. ‌ The USA international, who has yet to feature for the Bluebirds this season, is being lined up by the Owls as a short-term replacement for first-choice keeper Pierce Charles, who has been sidelined with a shoulder injury, according to Football League World. ‌ Horvath, 30, made 33 Championship appearances for Cardiff over the past two campaigns but has slipped down the pecking order following the summer arrival of Nathan Trott on loan from FC Copenhagen. Join the Cardiff City breaking news and top stories WhatsApp community. ‌ He has not been named in any of Brian Barry-Murphy's matchday squads so far this term and it is understood the shot-stopper is free to leave, with Matt Turner occupying the back-up 'keeper role on the bench at present. Indeed there are two others in a similar position to Horvath, with fellow goalkeeper Jak Alnwick also not featuring in any of the matchday squads this term. Jesper Daland, meanwhile, has not been seen since the home game against Peterborough United, with Barry-Murphy revealing he is in talks with other clubs over an exit. ‌ When asked by WalesOnline about the frozen-out trio, Barry-Murphy said on Thursday: "Jesper was in discussions with another club. I have no update on that because I have no idea how close it is or what the progress has been on that. "The situation hasn't changed from my point of view. "No update on Ethan or Jak. I don't know the conversations they may or may not be having with their representatives. ‌ "But as it is now, they are our players." Barry-Murphy further clarified saying that Daland was in talks with other clubs, but, to his knowledge Horvath and Alnwick were not. Sign up to our daily Cardiff City newsletter here. Reports, however, suggest Wednesday are weighing up either a free transfer or emergency loan deal to bring Horvath to Hillsborough, with boss Henrik Pedersen currently without a senior goalkeeper to call upon. ‌ Horvath has significant Championship experience with Nottingham Forest, Luton Town and Cardiff, as well as Champions League outings during his time at Belgian giants Club Brugge. He played a key role in Luton's promotion-winning season in 2022/23, keeping 20 clean sheets under Rob Edwards as the Hatters reached the Premier League via the play-offs. A move to Yorkshire would hand Horvath the chance to get back on the pitch and provide Wednesday with an experienced option as they contend with a squad crisis under owner Dejphon Chansiri. ‌ --- *Follow all of our social channels to ensure you stay up to date with the latest Bluebirds news. Tottenham remain interested in Savinho after missing out on Eberechi Eze

Spurs were all set to capture Eze after they reached an agreement with Crystal Palace on Wednesday for a £60million plus £7.5m in adds-on deal until Arsenal swooped in to hijack the transfer of the England international. Eze would have filled the creative void at Tottenham left by James Maddison, who is set to miss the rest of the season after he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee earlier this month, but Thomas Frank must now shift focus elsewhere. Intensity 🆙 💪 @BetMGMUK — Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) August 20, 2025 Talks were opened between Spurs and Manchester City on August 11 regarding the versatile Savinho, who made 48 appearances and produced 13 assists in his debut campaign at Etihad Stadium. While dialogue cooled as Tottenham explored a big-money move for Eze over the past week, Savinho is still a target for the north London club, PA understands, and reports in Brazil suggest an 80million euros (£69.2m) bid is being prepared. Frank has enjoyed a strong start to life at Spurs, with an impressive Super Cup display in defeat to Paris St Germain followed by a 3-0 victory over Burnley last Saturday but next month will bring the challenge of Champions League football. With Maddison out long-term and Dejan Kulusevski (knee) sidelined for the foreseeable future, the Danish coach is in need of attacking reinforcements and talks over Savinho could soon accelerate, especially after Saturday's trip to Man City.
