Salah's tribute turns CHAN spotlight into message of hope for Sudan
Published: Wednesday, 20 August 2025 When Salah Eldin Adel Ahmed El Hassan walked off the pitch in Zanzibar after Sudan's goalless draw with Senegal, he was not only carrying the TotalEnergies Man of the Match award — he was carrying the weight of a nation. His performance was more than a midfield masterclass; it was a gesture of pride for a country striving for joy during turbulent times. 'This qualification is for them; we want to make our people happy,' Salah declared, dedicating his award to his family and the Sudanese people. Against defending champions Senegal, Salah anchored the midfield with remarkable precision, completing 90% of his passes and winning five tackles. His composure helped Sudan secure the point that guaranteed their progression to the quarter-finals. 'We entered the match with a plan. Senegal is a great team and the defending champions of the previous edition. We had to defend a lot, and that worked for us,' he explained. Sudan's disciplined approach in this fixture contrasted sharply with their earlier games. After a shaky opening draw and a 4-0 triumph over Nigeria, coach Kwesi Appiah's youthful side adapted their strategy — and Salah's leadership proved decisive. At 30, Salah is no stranger to the CHAN stage. Featuring in his second edition, the Al-Hilal midfielder has already logged 259 minutes in the group stage. His relentless drive underscores the Falcons of Jediane's ambitions. He reflected on the effort of his teammates: 'This qualification is for all the Sudanese people; we want to make our people happy.' Salah's perspective also reached beyond the match. He praised the evolution of the tournament itself, highlighting the improvements in organisation and atmosphere. 'The CHAN tournament has a good feeling; all the officials are working to develop the competition, which is great,' he noted. With the group phase behind them, Sudan now turn to their quarter-final clash against Algeria, coached by Madjid Bougherra, on Saturday the 23rd at Aman Stadium in Zanzibar. Asked about the challenge ahead, Salah remained grounded: 'We are taking the competition step by step.' As the knockout rounds beckon, one truth endures: in moments of pressure, big players step forward. And for Sudan, Salah Eldin Adel Ahmed El Hassan is proving to be more than a midfielder — he is a symbol of belief, carrying the hopes of a nation.

Preview: Zamalek aim to regain winning form against Modern Sport - Egyptian Football
Cairo giants Zamalek will be looking to bounce back when they face Modern Sport in the Egyptian Premier League at Suez Canal Stadium on Thursday. Despite launching their campaign brilliantly with a 2-0 victory over Ceramica Cleopatra, the White Knights suffered a setback after a goalless draw against Arab Contractors on Saturday. The match saw Zamalek struggle to create clear-cut scoring opportunities, a point highlighted by coach Yannick Ferrera. The Belgian tactician admitted that his side struggled during the game against Arab Contractors. "We faced challenges in the final third of the field during the last match, where some mistakes affected our ability to score goals. However, we learn from every match and strive to improve our performance day by day," Ferrera explained during the pre-match press conference on Tuesday. He added that "the conditions for the Arab Contractors match were difficult, especially the quality of the pitch, which was not ideal, affecting our playing style." Furthermore, Ferrara noted that "the opponent relied on long balls and time-wasting," but that it was their role as a team to find solutions to these challenges instead of complaining. He also said he was happy to play against Modern Sport at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium. The Cairo-based side received a blow ahead of the game, however, when midfielder Nabil 'Donga' Emad was ruled out due to a knee injury sustained in the previous match. On the other hand, Zamalek could benefit from the services of left-back Ahmed Fatouh, who returned to training after apologising for attending a party without permission. Whether he participates in the match remains at the coach's discretion. Zamalek, currently fifth in the league standings with four points, will be looking to cement their supremacy over Modern Sport. Zamalek have emerged victorious in five of their previous seven league games, while Modern Sport have won one match and drawn one. On the other hand, sixth-placed Modern Sport kicked off their campaign with an impressive 2-2 draw against title holders Ahly. Then the team claimed a 2-1 victory over Ittihad of Alexandria in the previous matchday. Coach Magdy Abdel-Aaty, who took the helm at Modern Sport back in June, is expected to rely on veteran players such as Mohamed Abou Gabal, defender Ali El Fil, and striker Hossam Hassan to provide the experience needed in such games. He will also eye new signings Mahmoud Mamdouh, Rashad El Metwaly, Godwin Chika, and Adem Redjem to bolster his squad. Shearer accuses Isak of pouring 'flames on fire' of Newcastle row - World
Newcastle great Alan Shearer has accused wantaway striker Alexander Isak of pouring "flames on the fire" of his row with the Magpies by accusing the northeast club of breaking promises. The Sweden international, who was the second-highest goalscorer in the Premier League last season, has not featured for Newcastle in pre-season or their opening game of the campaign, a goalless draw away at Aston Villa last Saturday. Liverpool have reportedly had a £110 million bid ($149 million) rejected for the 25-year-old, with Newcastle holding out for a British transfer record fee of up to £150 million. Isak released a statement on Tuesday after deciding not to appear at the Professional Footballers' Association awards event despite being selected in the Premier League 2024/25 team of the year. "The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time," said Isak, with the 25-year-old adding: "When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue." But former Newcastle captain and manager Shearer, speaking to Betfair, labelled the current situation an "absolute mess" as he accused Isak's agent, Vlado Lemic, of failing his client. "If I was him, I'd get his agent in a room and sack him on the spot immediately, because he is meant to be giving him the advice to sign that six-year deal and there's no get out clause," Shearer said. "I mean, it's ridiculous. And to take anyone's word in football... it's nonsensical to say that someone said, 'Oh, I'll be able to get out at the end of the season'. Really? I mean, come on." The ex-England striker added: "I've always said there are two sides to every story, but my feelings are exactly the same: he's gone about it in the wrong way. "I just think even releasing this statement last night has thrown flames onto the fire, which he didn't need to do... It doesn't benefit anyone." According to reports, Isak had been promised an improved contract only for northeast side Newcastle to hold off due to pressures of meeting financial sustainability rules. Newcastle issued a statement late Tuesday saying while they were saddened by Isak's comments, they could yet welcome him back into the squad. "No commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer," said the statement. "We want to keep our best players... Alex remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he is ready to rejoin his teammates." According to reports, Isak had been promised an improved contract only for northeast side Newcastle to hold off due to pressures of meeting financial sustainability rules. Isak has scored 62 goals in 109 appearances since joining from Real Sociedad in 2022, including the winner against Liverpool in the League Cup final earlier this year that ended Newcastle's 70-year wait to win a domestic trophy. Liverpool have already spent around £300 million overhauling a squad that romped to the Premier League title last season. But they have also recouped over £200 million in sales and are still in the market for attacking options after the departures of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez and tragic death of Diogo Jota. Any deal is unlikely to be done before the two clubs face off in their next Premier League game on Monday at St James' Park.
