Weapons star Julia Garner looks unrecognizable as she transforms into convicted crypto fraudster for new show

Daily Mail10 hours ago
Julia Garner looked dramatically different from her usual self when she was spotted in Vancouver, Canada, on Wednesday.
The 31-year-old actress — who currently stars in the record-breaking horror hit Weapons — traded in her standard tightly curled blond locks in favor of long wavy brunette hair as she got into character as the convicted cryptocurrency fraudster Caroline Ellison.
Garner — who has been cast as Madonna in a long-delayed biopic — was joined by her costar Anthony Boyle, who plays the FTX cryptocurrency exchange founder and convicted felon Sam Bankman-Fried, as they filmed scenes for the upcoming Netflix adaptation of The Altruists, which details the collapses of the exchange and their intimate relationship.
Garner mimicked Ellison's ultra-casual style with a tan-and-green pullover atop a simple white shirt.
Her costume included black Asics trainers, and she appeared to be made up modestly.
In another shot, the Ozark star was outfitted with thick black plastic-frame glasses to mimic Ellison's prominent eyewear.
Boyle was also dressed casually, in line with how Bankman-Fried was normally attired before he began regularly wearing suits for his court dates.
The Irish actor sported a mass of messy dark curls and wore a pale-gray sweatshirt over a burgundy T-shirt, along with rumpled khakis and white athletic shoes.
The Altruists is written and executive produced by Graham Moore, who also serves as co-showrunner with EP Jacqueline Hoyt.
Barack and Michelle Obama are also executive producers via their production company Higher Ground, which has a multi-year deal with Netflix.
FTX, which is now bankrupt, was a cryptocurrency and exchange and hedge fund that was founded by Bankman-Fried and Gary Wang in 2019, before its collapse just three years later.
Ellison, who served as the CEO of FTX's sister company, the crypto trading company Alameda Research, testified that she had worked with Bankman-Fried to illegally funnel customer funds from FTX into Alameda, which were used to pay off the trading company's loans.
After the misuse of funds was first reported on, the rival cryptocurrency exchange Binance announced it was selling all of FTX's crypto coins that it held, which led multiple FTX investors to try to withdraw their funds.
In addition to propping up Alameda, Bankman-Fried was accused of using billions in customers' money to fund his lavish lifestyle, which allowed him to gain influence with other high-profile industry figures and politicians.
Ellison managed to secure a plea deal in exchange for testifying against Bankman-Fried and other FTX executives, under which terms she pleaded guilty in December 2022 to charges of wire fraud, multiple counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to commit commodities fraud, conspiracy to commit securities fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
She received a relatively light two-year prison sentence, and according to the Bureau of Prisons, she is currently slated to be released in April of 2026.
However, Ellison will also be required to pay $11 billion in fines.
At his trial, Bankman-Fried pleaded not guilty to seven counts of fraud and conspiracy, but a jury convicted him of all the charges in November 2023.
In March 2024, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison and required to pay over $11 billion in fines, though he is currently appealing his conviction.
Garner's turn playing Ellison on screen comes after she starred in the horror hit Weapons.
The film was well-reviewed, earning an impressive 87 percent fresh rating from the most prestigious critics surveyed by Rotten Tomatoes, and it has so far earned an impressive $100 million at the global box office against a relatively modest $38 million budget since debuting in theaters on August 8.
The film, which is written and directed by Barbarian filmmaker Zach Cregger — formerly a member of the sketch comedy troupe The Whitest Kids U Know — stars Garner as a third-grade teacher who arrives at school one day to find that only one of her students has showed up for class.
Police discover that that the other 17 children all mysteriously woke up and ran out of their homes into the night at exactly 2:17 a.m., but where they went — and what happened to them — remains a mystery.
Josh Brolin, who is also an executive producer on Weapons, costars as a parent who lashes at at Garner's character after his son was one of her students who disappeared.
The large cast also features Alden Ehrenreich, Marvel star Benedict Wong, Euphoria actor Austin Abrams and Oscar-nominee Amy Madigan.
Garner has had back-to-back blockbusters in just weeks, as she also starred as the Silver Surfer in Marvel's Fantastic Four reboot.

Jaw-dropping moment Love Is Blind UK star storms off set and rages 'get this mic off me!' after clash with 'really rude and disrespectful' Netflix co-star

The latest season of Love Is Blind UK is off to a very dramatic start - with one pod member storming off in tears and demanding someone 'get this mic of me' after a heated chat with a co-star. Netflix 's hit reality show sees hopefuls date each other through a wall - looking to fall in love based on personality alone. And the UK adaptation of the landmark US series has just landed with its second season, with married couple Emma and Matt Willis as the show's hosts. But while some connections are blossoming in the pods, others have not been so lucky in love. Gaming entrepreneur Kieran, 30, developed a relationship with two girls - Megan and Sophie. And he quickly admitted his head was 'in a bit of a pickle' as he was tasked with deciding between the two. Testing the waters, he left Megan a personal gift, which ruffled Sophie's feathers and prompted a fiery confrontation. An irritated Sophie told Kieran: 'Your actions have made your intentions very clear,' to which he responded: 'I have made a strong connection elsewhere.' 'I bring a lot to the table,' Sophie argued. 'I want to be with someone who sees that.' Annoyed and on the verge of tears, Sophie called out Kieran's decision as 'rude' and 'disrespectful.' 'I wouldn't do that to you because it's a sh** feeling,' she continued. 'If you truly cared about how I felt, you wouldn't have put me in that position. 'I'm a prize. I'm a catch and, on the outside world, you would see that, so I'm not here to beg you to love me.' Wiping away tears, Sophie told the camera: 'I just feel like I'm done now. I didn't find my husband and that's okay.' And after returning to the girls' living area, Sophie broke down in tears again, dabbing frantically at her eyes. Walking off screen, Sophie says: 'Someone needs to get this mic off me' and swears repeatedly 'I just want to go home, I've had enough,' she said, before storming off, saying: 'F**k this, I'm going home. F**k this - piece of sh**.' Walking off screen, Sophie says: 'Someone needs to get this mic off me.' Kieran did select Megan, and the pair got engaged, but the series teased at the end of episode four that Manchester-based Sophie will be back for a future cast mixer. Despite ending a five-year relationship a year ago, law graduate Sophie said she doesn't think she's ever been in love and is scared of having her heartbroken. Before the show, the senior commercial manager admitted she can be confrontational but thinks her over-protective dad and four brothers could be the reason she's still single. She said she's most attracted to men who can stand up for themselves and won't let her walk all over them. Love Is Blind UK season 2 is now available to watch on Netflix

And Just Like That comes to an end – this is where to watch Carrie Bradshaw's farewell

And Just Like That came to an end last night, with Sarah Jessica Parker 's character Carrie Bradshaw bidding a final farewell. Sex and the City became a cultural behemoth when it first aired in the Nineties, but the spin-off wasn't as warmly received in 2021. Among the mixed reviews of the first two seasons of And Just Like That, many fans and critics cringed at the show's attempts at inclusivity. Others, however, were charmed and compelled by Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte's return, alongside a cast of new characters, including Seema and Lisa. But last month, it was quietly announced that the third season would be its last, with showrunner Michael Patrick King calling it 'a wonderful place to stop'. This came as a shock for many fans, who felt like the series had finally got into its stride – The Independent awarded it three stars, finding that the show had 'found its groove.' Just like the original show, the reboot has become a form of Cosmopolitan-fuelled escapism – it romanticises New York, treats us to outlandish fashion and celebrates female friendships. But the reviews are in for the final episode of And Just Like That, and spoiler: they're not good. Thankfully, this isn't goodbye forever. If anything, the HBO reboot has only ignited love for the original Sex and the City series. Some decade-long fans have been revisiting older episodes as sweet relief from the spin-off, while younger generations are discovering it for the very first time. From where to watch season four of And Just Like That – including the last-ever episode – to how to stream all six seasons of Sex and the City, here's everything you need to know. The new season of The Sex and the City spin-off came to a close on Thursday, 14 August 2025, on Sky TV and Now. The season saw Carrie and Aidan enter a long-distance 'situationship' as she settled into her new townhouse in Gramercy Park and ventured into fiction writing. Miranda, meanwhile, explored new work and romantic opportunities, and Charlotte attempted to balance her career with parenting two teenagers. The season three finale closed the chapter for Carrie, but did she walk away from And Just Like That in a relationship? Or did she finally embrace her independence, rather than running away from it? You can watch the final episode on Now TV now. Where to watch the first two seasons of And Just Like That in the UK If you aren't a Sky customer, you can get a Sky Stream box (£15 per month, which comes with a Sky TV entertainment package and a free subscription to Netflix's standard plan with ads, as well as a free subscription to Discovery+ (the home of Eurosport). If you don't want to buy the Sky Stream box, but still want to watch And Just Like That, you can stream it on the Sky-owned Now streaming service (formerly Now TV). You'll need an entertainment membership to watch the show (£9.99 per month, You can also buy the entire season one and two box set on Apple TV+ ( and Amazon Prime Video ( If you're already mourning Carrie's departure from our screens (or want to erase And Just Like That from your memory), you can stream all six seasons of Sex and the City on Now TV. Following the sex columnist as she navigates New York with her three best friends – Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha – it's an addictive look at dating, friendship, careers and life in your thirties. With memorable fashion moments, iconic lines that are quoted to this day and men who are still ranked at the pub (Aidan always wins), there's a reason why Sex and the City has such a cult following.

Strictly star George Clarke reveals he's dating stunning lingerie model

The YouTube star is notorious for being single – up until now – as he subtly announces his new relationship just moments before his name is revealed in the Strictly Come Dancing lineup George Clarke has been announced as one of the 15 celebrity contestants of this year's Strictly Come Dancing, just after his first ever public relationship was confirmed. ‌ The 25-year-old YouTuber has made quite the name for himself in the online world, which was amplified by his appearance on the Netflix reality show Inside, which launched earlier this year. Fans of the comedic creator have always been in on the joke about his love life, as the star often talked about his dating mishaps and single life, having never confirmed any kind of relationship. ‌ That was until this week, when George addressed rumours about his relationship status, confirming that he does in fact have a girlfriend. It was during a livestream that the content creator spoke openly about being in a relationship with someone called Amelia. ‌ Fans were quick to find out all they needed to know, as it was discovered that his new love is a stunning model named Yasmin Amelia. She has an impressive 30k followers on Instagram – while George has 686k – and is signed to the J'adore Models agency. According to the Daily Mail, viewers were discussing the news on Reddit, sharing information after the livestream. One user wrote: "Caught me off guard because he is a very private person, especially about his dating/love life. Even on the pod, he has expressed his desire to keep things private and off socials." Another shared: "I heard about this on his stream, and I'm genuinely happy for him!" Someone else chimed in: "He confirmed he follows her Insta and requested to give her space to be her own person." Although, some of his followers couldn't help but speculate about the timing of his low-key announcement. They wrote: "Wonder whose idea it really was to all of a sudden hard launch his month-and-a-half-long relationship?" ‌ That's where the Strictly curse comes in; as many people understand, over the years, the show has been at the forefront of numerous cheating scandals, brought together many celebrity couples, and torn apart existing relationships. We saw this happen when Joe Sugg became the first-ever YouTuber to take on the show, and he began a relationship with his dance partner, and now long-term partner, Diana Bussell. Showing his support for the fellow online star, Sugg commented on the post announcing George's participation in the show. He wrote: "YES @georgeclarkeey, this is going to be brilliant," to which George jokingly responded, "You clearly haven't seen the hips move." Sugg promised to send him a video from his first day at rehearsals back in 2018, when he appeared in the 16th series of the show and finished as a runner-up. He reassured George that this clip would prove that "miracles can happen".
