Agama violation: Two Perur temple staff suspended
Following the incident, a devotee had staged a sit-in protest in front of the temple along with members of the Hindu Munnani, demanding action against those who permitted the entry.
Sources said the temple staff allowed the officer inside based on instructions from a senior HR&CE official. However, access to the inner precincts of temples after 9 pm is considered a violation of the Agama Vidhi (the temple's rituals and practices prescribed in the Agama scriptures).
Meanwhile, the HR&CE department has also banned devotees from carrying cellphones inside the temple. The restriction came into effect on Thursday, coinciding with the Adi Amavasai, when thousands of devotees flock to the shrine.
A dedicated counter has been set up to collect mobile phones, and tokens are being issued in exchange. However, officials denied that the ban was linked to the SP incident, stating that the move was already under consideration to prevent devotees from photographing the deities.

Punjab: Soldiers killed in Kulgam encounter cremated with military honours
Lance Naik Pritpal Singh (28) from Manupur village near Samrala and sepoy Harminder Singh (26) from Mandi Gobindgarh, who lost their lives during an ongoing army operation in Akhal area of Kulgam in Jammu and Kashmir, were cremated with military and state honours on Sunday. The MLA said the state government would provide financial assistance to the family as per its policy. Samrala BDPO Lakhwinder Kaur, naib tehsildar Rajesh Ahuja and senior army officers, along with a large number of local residents, social and religious figures also offered tributes. Pritpal had joined the army in 2015. His uncle and father's elder brother are also retired army personnel. He was married off just six months ago. Pritpal's brother Harpreet Singh said he received a call on Friday morning from army officials that he died in a gunfight. He was eagerly awaited by his family, as this Diwali was to be his first visit home after his wedding just a few months ago. Sepoy Harminder Singh (26) was to return home on leave in a week, his cousin said. He is survived by his elderly parents, a brother and a sister. The two soldiers were killed in an overnight gunfight with terrorists on the ninth day of an ongoing encounter in Kulgam on Saturday. The encounter began on August 1 after security forces launched a cordon and search operation in a forest at Akhal in the south Kashmir district, following intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists there. Chief minister Bhagwant Mann has already expressed grief over the death of the two soldiers. Former CM Amarinder Singh, too, condoled their death. 'Their supreme sacrifice in service to the nation will never be forgotten,' Singh posted on X. (With PTI inputs)

SP's Gonda chief gets two years in jail in assault case
Lucknow/Ayodhya: Additional district and sessions judge (III) of Gonda Rajesh Kumar sentenced five accused, including Samajwadi Party (SP) Gonda district president Arshad Hussain, to two years in prison and imposed a fine of Rs 11,000 on each of them. The case dates back to Sep 28, 2014, when a violent clash broke out between two groups in Chishtipur village under Kotwali Dehat police station over a land dispute. The altercation escalated into a severe physical confrontation, with both sides filing FIRs, alleging assault and attempted murder. District govt counsel, Gonda, Basant Shukla said that first FIR of the incident was filed by Sarfaraz Hussain — now the national vice-president of the Samajwadi Yuvjan Sabha, accusing Shakir Ali, Arif, Firoz Khan, Mobin, Tasleem, Qayyum, Maroof and seven others of attempting to kill him and his associates. The counter-FIR was lodged by Shakir Ali, alleging that Arshad Hussain, his brother Afsar Hussain, Sarfaraz Hussain, Masoom Ali of Sarai Zargar, and Ghulam Haider of Daulatpur assaulted him during the incident. Following investigation and corroboration of evidence, police filed charge sheets against the accused in court, said Shukla. "During the course of the trial, two of the accused from the first faction, Idrees and Chunnan, passed away, while the cases against five others — Mohammad Jaleel Khan, Waseem Khan, Saddam Hussain, Shakib, and Akhtar — remain pending in the subordinate court," added DGC Shukla. Shukla said that in the first FIR, Shakir Ali, Arif, Firoz Khan, Mobin, Tasleem, Qayyum and Maroof were awarded seven years' rigorous imprisonment and a total fine of Rs 54,250. Reacting to the judgment, SP district president told journalists in Gonda, "We will approach the high court against the lower court's verdict. We respect the court's decision but will place our side before the HC to seek either a reduction or complete dismissal of the sentence. The process of filing the petition has already begun." All five convicts from Hussain's group have been granted bail until the appeal is heard with the court allowing them time to challenge the verdict in the Allahabad High Court.

Kadapa police arrest 6 most wanted red sanders smugglers, Rs 1 cr worth logs seized
Tirupati: Kadapa district police arrested six most wanted red sanders smugglers and seized red sanders logs worth approximately 1 cr near the Lankamalla forest area. According to Kadapa SP EG Ashok Kumar, Chapadu police arrested E Naga Dasthagiri Reddy (35), M Ramamohan Reddy (47), U Krishnaiah (53), K Srinivasulu (44), B Obul Reddy (54) and S Balagangi Reddy (44). Police recovered 52 red sanders logs weighing around one tonne and seized two cars and a bike from the possession of the accused. Naga Dasthagiri Reddy was a most wanted smuggler, accused in about 84 smuggling cases and 34 theft cases. He was even booked thrice under the Preventive Detention Act but continued to involve in smuggling activities. His wife Lalubi is also a smuggler, who is serving a jail sentence at present. Many others in his family are also involved in smuggling activities, the SP said. Police investigation revealed that Delhi-based red sanders kingpin Saleem and others used to route money through hawala network headed by Hyderabad-based Vikram Singh Solanki to Naga Dasthagiri Reddy. Police had recently arrested Vikram Solanki. Police said other smugglers nabbed by the police were also seasoned offenders involved in multiple smuggling cases.
