Fermin Lopez chase faces complications as rivals enter the scene
Manchester United are set to face competition from Premier League rivals for a midfield target. Transfer flurry After securing the signings of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, the Red Devils fixed their sights on a striker. It seems that United have made excellent progress on a deal for Red Bull Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko and it is only a matter of time before he signs for the club. Midfield targets United have already moved on to midfield targets and there were huge reports on Wednesday that United had begun talks with Brighton and Hove Albion over Carlos Baleba. Ruben Amorim's side have also been linked to the likes of Atalanta's Ederson and Sporting CP's Morten Hjulmand. Fermin Lopez chase Another midfielder who has long been on United's radar is FC Barcelona's Fermin Lopez. United have reportedly already had a bid turned down for the Spaniard and there are a host of Premier League clubs interested in him, mainly Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool. Chelsea getting ready to pounce CaughtOffside report that United may need to act fast though as one of their Premier League rivals is readying a move for the 22-year-old. The website reports that 'Chelsea are understood to be preparing a bid in the region of €60m for Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez, who is also on Manchester United's radar.' It has been confirmed by sources that the Blues are not done yet in the window and have a 'strong interest' in the player. Lopez has had offers from Saudi Arabia but he is reportedly keen to stay in Europe at this stage of his career. The report adds that, 'Fermin is not desperate to leave Barcelona, but the Catalan giants have well-documented financial problems, which could mean they'd have to consider a sale for the right price.' It is also suggested that the board is split on what to do with him but that a 'substantial offer' would be required for the Catalans to sanction a sale. Upgraded sports centre opens for future Lionesses
An updated sports facility that hopes to encourage more female football players has been officially opened. Kettering Sports Park at Thurston Drive in the Northamptonshire town now has an all-weather astroturf pitch, new fencing, LED floodlights, spectator area as well as a refurbished sports pavilion. Partly supported by Lionesses Futures Fund, the pitch will prioritise access for women and girls through reserved peak-time slots and inclusive changing facilities, the local council said. The pavilion, originally built in the 1980s, will also support the Kettering Town Harriers Athletics Club, which gets a new flood-lit track on the site. The facility will also be open to the wider community, ensuring everyone can benefit, North Northamptonshire Council says. Construction on the improvements began in March 2025 following the award of over £1m in funding from various sources. Brian Benneyworth from North Northamptonshire Council said: "It's very timely to launch our new facilities here at Kettering as the Lionesses celebrate a phenomenal successive win in the 2025 UEFA Euros. "Football is a growing sport for women and girls and this is a much-needed resource for the Kettering community." Northamptonshire Football Association chief executive officer Kirsty Clarke said the organisation was "excited to welcome all members of the community" to the sports park. The new pitch at Kettering is one of more than 30 projects across England to benefit from the Lionesses Futures Fund, a £30m cash injection from the government and The FA delivered by the Football Foundation. Arsenal season betting preview: How likely are the Gunners to end title drought?
By Oli Gamp The optimists will tell you this is Arsenal's year. Six signings secured, including the long-awaited arrival of a new centre-forward, gives the Gunners a much upgraded squad from the one that struggled to keep pace with Liverpool last season. Arsenal finished second for the third season in a row and heartache is becoming a sensation far too familiar with supporters. And that is why the pessimists will tell you that more disappointment is set to follow. They'll tell you that watching Arsenal is like a Netflix series — because you always have to wait until next season to find out what happens next. Advertisement There might actually be some momentum behind the wave Arsenal have been riding in pre-season, however. They've leveled up in almost every position. Their talented youngsters like Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly have one more year of experience in the bank and another teenage star is on the horizon in Max Dowman. They now have one of the most menacing forward lines in the Premier League, after a season struggling without a recognised No 9. The problem for Arsenal is that title-holders Liverpool have strengthened too — spending nearly £300m on stars like Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike — while Newcastle striker Alexander Isak may yet arrive at Anfield. Chelsea and Manchester City have also shown their intent in this transfer window and should be challenging. Last year, Arsenal were the only challengers to Liverpool in the title race; now they face the prospect of a contest in much more trying circumstances. The 2024-25 Premier League table shows Arsenal lost the same number of games as Liverpool (four). The difference was that the Gunners drew a whopping 14 games, while Liverpool ended up with five more victories. Arsenal have to find a way to win games even when they're not at their best. That is the hallmark of a champion. Win the title. It's as simple as that. It's been more than two decades since Arsenal last won the Premier League in 2004. For a club as big as the Gunners, that's not good enough. It's been five years since they lifted a single trophy and at some point manager Mikel Arteta has got to start delivering. His classic mantra 'trust the process' has been turned into a parody by Arsenal's rival supporters and soon no one at the Emirates will trust the process. Yes, Arsenal have been one of the best teams to watch in the Premier League in recent years. Yes, they've been largely consistent on the pitch. Yes, they have improved as a team. You only have to see their progress from the 2021-22 (69 points) to the 2022-23 season (84) and then 2023-24 (89). Last season was a step back, but that was largely due to injuries and their lack of a prolific striker. Advertisement Now that Arsenal have the building blocks in place again, and after strengthening those foundations with more quality, they really do have a shot at the title, but they will need a near-faultless season. The margin for error is tiny. What about the cups? Going all the way in for the Premier League and finishing with a cup too is no easy feat. Liverpool couldn't manage it — going out of the Champions League in the knockouts, while losing to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final. That being said, if Arsenal were to miss out on the title but finish this season with a domestic trophy, you'd imagine most fans would take that. That would be demonstrable progress as a team. Arsenal are second favourites to win the Premier League title behind Liverpool, with Betfair backing them at 9/4 to break their 21-year hoodoo. The Reds are rated as the 7/4 favourites. Top four should be a formality for Arsenal and that's reflected in the 2/15 odds. You would not be surprised if they finished in the top two again and they are rated at 5/6 to do just that. Arsenal are odds-on to win at least one major trophy this season and 14/1 to win the Premier League alongside the League Cup or Champions League. It's been a busy window for the Gunners, who have splashed out nearly £200m on signings. Arteta should be mostly satisfied that nearly every area of the pitch has been upgraded. He has a new goalkeeper in Kepa Arrizabalaga, who joined in a bargain £5m from rivals Chelsea and gives the team a quality option to challenge David Raya. They also landed Cristhian Mosquera from Valencia, who is a versatile defender — capable of playing at both centre-back and right-back and he provides solid depth to the squad. In midfield, Arsenal finally wrapped up the signing of Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi for around £60m after lengthy negotiations, while the club also snapped up Brentford captain Christian Nørgaard for around £12m. Noni Madueke, who cost around £55m after joining from rivals Chelsea, has added more depth on the wings and will act as an understudy for Bukayo Saka. And up front, Arsenal finally got their man by sealing a move for Viktor Gyökeres after talks with Sporting Lisbon dragged on for much of the summer. He cost Arsenal around £63m and provides the club with a genuine quality goalscorer that could propel them to success after he bagged 54 goals from 52 games last season. There's no getting around it, Arsenal have a challenging start to the season. The Gunners better come prepared because the new Premier League campaign will come at them fast. They start with a trip to Old Trafford on August 17 to face Manchester United, which is usually a game Arsenal would be confident of winning after the Red Devils' calamitous campaign last season that saw them finish 15th. Arsenal is favoured for that match, but after a summer rebuild, Ruben Amorim's men could be a much more dangerous force this season. Advertisement Their second game is much more winnable as they welcome newly-promoted Leeds United to the Emirates on August 23. Then comes a monumental test as they go straight into an early title-defining clash against Liverpool at Anfield on August 31. That will be a real indicator of who is a serious contender for the crown this season. After the international break, Arsenal then face Nottingham Forest and Manchester City at home and Newcastle away. It doesn't get any tougher.
