Mystery as first-ever ‘affordable' Tesla delayed ‘at least several months' again – as sales in EV firm plunge
TESLA has delayed its affordable EV once again, after promising affordable cars for years.
Elon Musk's company has long promised an affordable vehicle to bolster sales but buyers will be forced to keep waiting.

A cheap and very basic Model Y car was expected to arrive in the first half of this year.
But it has now been postponed by "at least several months', according to a report by Reuters.
The more affordable vehicle, codenamed E41, may begin production as early as the third quarter of 2025, or possibly even later, according to sources speaking to Reuters.
The company hasn't disclosed the cause of the delay, but the report comes at a time of significant financial volatility in the industry, with tariffs expected to have a major impact on the
markets
.
Elon Musk
's focus on overseeing the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has also been suggested as a contributing factor to the delay of the affordable EV.
The company had initially planned to release a standalone $25,000 car in 2025, but Musk is said to have scrapped those plans, shifting focus to a two-door Robotaxi, called the Cybercab.
The Cybercab is expected to launch in 2026.
Tesla
is now looking to introduce a more affordable Model Y, followed by a cheaper Model 3 in the
future
, according to Reuters.

The vehicle will be smaller and 20 percent less expensive to manufacture compared to the standard Model Y, according to the Reuters report.
Currently, the most affordable
Tesla
is the Model 3 Long Range AWD, priced at $44,130 (or about £33,182), including destination fees.
The starting price for the Model Y is at least $50,380 (or about £37,880).
Tesla
has faced significant challenges in recent months, with its stock plunging across
Europe
due to backlash against Musk's drastic measures at the Department for Government Efficiency (Doge).
Tesla
cars
have also been vandalized across
Europe
and the US as a form of protest against Musk's actions.
The Tesla CEO has become an increasingly controversial figure both globally and particularly in the US.
He has been accused of making a Nazi salute during Trump's inauguration, getting involved in the UK's
immigration
debate, and openly mocking and marginalizing the
transgender
community.

These controversies have had a ripple effect on his Tesla sales, which dropped by 45 per cent in
Europe
in January.
Following the major decline in profit and sales, Musk has said he intends to "substantially" reduce his involvement in the US government.

Tesla parts ways with top executive and fixer for Elon Musk
One of Elon Musk's top lieutenants has left his job at Tesla amid plunging sales and a pivot to autonomous driving, artificial intelligence and robotics. Omead Afshar, who was promoted to run sales and operations in North America and Europe last year, has left his role, according to two people familiar with the decision. Jenna Ferrua, director of North American human resources, has also departed from the company, they said. Tesla, Mr Afshar and Ms Ferrua did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Bloomberg first reported the moves. Mr Afshar's departure comes at a difficult time for Tesla as its sales and earnings decline. It has suffered from a lack of new models, increased competition — in particular in China — and a consumer backlash against Mr Musk's right-wing political activism in Europe and support of US President Donald Trump. Tesla's robotaxis had multiple driving mistakes in first test, videos show
A first public test of robotaxis by Tesla in Texas led to multiple traffic problems and driving issues, videos from company-selected riders showed over the first few days. Chief executive Elon Musk has tied Tesla's financial future to self-driving technology, and with Tesla sales down, the stakes are high. He said Tesla would roll out the service to other US cities later this year and predicted "millions of Teslas" operating "fully autonomously" by the second half of next year. The Tesla fans invited to the trial were strongly supportive and posted videos of hours of trouble-free driving, but issues drew questions from federal road safety regulators and auto safety experts. Issues included Tesla robotaxis entering the wrong lane, dropping passengers off in the middle of multiple-lane roads or at intersections, sudden braking, speeding and driving over a curb. In one instance, a robotaxi drove into a lane meant for oncoming traffic for about six seconds. It had pulled into an intersection in its left-turn lane with its indicator on. Then the steering wheel wobbled momentarily, and instead of turning, it proceeded straight into the lane meant for oncoming traffic, prompting a honk from a car behind it. In another incident, the car suddenly braked with no obstruction apparent in the video. The passenger jerked forward and their belongings were thrown to the floor. In a third video, taken from another vehicle, a robotaxi abruptly stopped twice in the middle of the road while passing police vehicles with flashing lights. "This is awfully early to have a bunch of videos of erratic and poor driving," said Philip Koopman, a Carnegie Mellon University computer-engineering professor and autonomous-technology expert. I was not expecting as many videos of problematic driving on the very first day. Tesla is testing about 10 to 20 robotaxis, which are standard Model Ys with advanced software, and has been operating since Sunday afternoon. Reuters was able to independently verify the locations of at least 11 videos showing issues. Tesla did not respond to a request for comment. The incidents caught on camera did not involve accidents, and one expert said some reflected a decision to focus on safety. "So far so good. It handled the situations very well and likely better than even good drivers," Alain Kornhauser, Princeton University professor of operations research and financial engineering, said by email.
