South Korea: Lee vows national interest-focused diplomacy ahead of summits with Trump, Ishiba
Seoul: South Korea President Lee Jae Myung said Thursday that he will spare no effort to achieve mutually-beneficial diplomacy by putting national interests as the top priority, ahead of high-stakes summit talks with US President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. Lee made the remarks at a meeting with senior aides as he is set to depart for Tokyo for summit talks with Ishiba. Following the Tokyo summit, Lee will travel to Washington for summit talks with Trump on August 25. "In diplomacy, I think we must prioritise the lasting interests of the nation and all Korean people, rather than my personal position or the temporary standing of the current administration," Lee told the meeting, according to the presidential office. Amid a shifting international order and trade environment, Lee promised to work toward implementing a "mutually beneficial" diplomatic and security policy, with national interests as the top priority. "We will continue to seek practical solutions for peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula," he added, asking for the public's support. During the meeting, Lee called for measures to reduce the nation's suicide rates, which remain the highest among member countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). "The issue of suicide has become so serious that it can no longer be ignored," he said. "We must fundamentally shift the policy paradigm, treating suicide as a social disaster." Lee also directed the establishment of an intergovernmental body tasked with significantly reducing suicide rates, and developing comprehensive suicide prevention and mental health support programmes, Yonhap news agency reported. Earlier on Wednesday, South Korean Prime Minister Kim Min-seok had said relations with Japan are "very important" with many opportunities for mutual cooperation. Kim made the remarks during a meeting with Japanese delegates visiting Seoul to attend the Korea-Japan Forum, as President Lee Jae Myung was set to visit Tokyo later this week for summit talks with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. "With the launch of the new administration, South Korea and Japan are moving forward on a future-oriented path," Kim had said. "The two countries have a very important relationship with many areas of mutual cooperation, and the president's decision to visit Japan was made in that context."

Gadkari stresses on cutting cost of hydrogen production
Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday said India can transform from being an energy importer to a global exporter if it can bring down the cost of hydrogen production to $1 per kg from the present cost of around $5 per kg. " Solar energy is the 'Sanjeevani Booti' for our planet. And hydrogen is the fuel of the future. I drive a Toyota Mirai , which itself means 'future' in Japanese, because I believe hydrogen will transform mobility and energy," said Gadkari while delivering the 24th Darbari Seth Memorial Lecture at TERI . Noting that the biggest hurdle lies in setting up hydrogen filling stations and developing systems to transport the fuel, he said, "These areas need urgent and extensive work,". Explaining the potential of using waste for energy, Gadkari said municipal solid waste could be a game-changer. "If we segregate waste, extract organic matter and feed it into biodigesters , it produces methane. Instead of converting methane into CNG, if we use it to produce green hydrogen , the country's municipal waste alone could generate very cheap hydrogen," said the minister. tnn

India–Japan ties: Tokyo set to unveil 10 trillion yen investment plan; announcement expected during PM Modi's trip
Japan is planning to announce a decade-long investment target worth 10 trillion yen ($68 billion) for India during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit later this month. The plan is seen as an upgrade of the five-year investment target set three years back, aiming to deepen economic ties as Japan and India step up efforts to promote a 'free and open Indo-Pacific' amid China's growing assertiveness, Kyodo News reported on Thursday, citing government sources. According to sources, the new investment target could be highlighted in a joint statement following summit talks between Japanese PM Shigeru Ishiba and PM Modi. PM Modi will begin his three-day trip to Japan on 29 August, marking his first visit since May 2023, when he travelled to Hiroshima for the Group of Seven summit. The previous target, announced during then Japanese PM Fumio Kishida's visit to India in March 2022, had aimed for 5 trillion yen in public and private investment and financing over five years. Alongside the new investment goal, both governments are also working on a fresh framework to boost cooperation in economic security, focusing on securing stable supplies of critical goods. Major sectors under discussion include semiconductors, essential minerals, communications, clean energy, artificial intelligence and pharmaceutical products, Kyodo News reported. The two sides are also planning to launch an AI cooperation initiative to support the development of emerging technology and related startups. 'We hope promoting cooperation between Japanese companies (and their Indian counterparts) in fields where Indian firms have strengths would contribute to the growth of the Japanese economy,' a source told Kyodo News. During his stay, PM Modi may also travel to Sendai, in Miyagi Prefecture in northeastern Japan, to view an experimental shinkansen bullet train car and visit a leading Japanese manufacturer of chip-making equipment, the sources added.
