Society maven's plea to court after she crashed her Range Rover into a Tesla - before SMILING, assaulting a cop and refusing to take a breath test

Daily Maila day ago
A Sydney socialite who assaulted a police officer after crashing her Range Rover into a parked Tesla has told a court her struggling mental health was to blame.
Waverley Local Court heard that Vanessa Jacobs Fennell is preparing a mental health application, likely under Section 14, which allows an accused to avoid punishment on mental health grounds.
Dressed in a tan-coloured suit and coat, and carrying a Hermès handbag, the 55-year-old smiled brightly as she arrived at court flanked by her lawyer.
Inside, she stared down journalists angrily in the courtroom, despite arriving as if she were walking down a catwalk.
A psychologist's report was among the submissions into the court hearing which said Fennell suffered from significant 'stresses' in her life, including the loss of two children.
According to her lawyer, on the day of the incident, Fennell had an adverse reaction to prescribed antidepressants which increased intoxication and caused dissociation.
She previously admitted negligent driving, assaulting police, refusing to submit to a breath test and failing to give her particulars to the owner of damaged property.
The mum-of-two, who was once in the running to appear on the reality TV show Real Housewives of Sydney, spent a night in a police cell following her run-in with the law.
Magistrate Kirk Dailly adjourned the matter for sentencing on August 25.
Video footage obtained by the Daily Mail showed Jacobs Fennell immediately after the incident in Bellevue Hill in Sydney's east on March 21 as bystanders tried to persuade her to get out of the car.
She smiled and appeared to laugh in the driver's seat as witnesses tried to undo her seatbelt and get her to leave the car for someone else to park.
The socialite had not yet been cuffed as police escorted her and, at one point, she appeared to try to free her arm from an officer's grip and then slap the officer.
The footage of her arrest then showed two officers frogmarching her from the scene.
Fennell was seen enjoying drinks at Double Bay restaurant Tanuki with a group of Scots College mums on the afternoon of the crash, before some of them headed across the road to martini bar Bobbie's.
Fennell has told friends the driving incident was brought about by drinking two glasses of rosé while she had the antidepressant Celapram in her system, triggering her 'out of character' behaviour.
She is understood to suffer from depression and recurring nightmares following the death of a baby daughter.
Ms Jacobs Fennell was married to private equity banker Tom Fennell, who lives very close to the crash site where she was arrested
Her recent break-up with prominent Melbourne businessman Nathan Sable has also reportedly added to her mental health issues.
The pair are believed to have been a couple until a few weeks before Valentine's Day when things suddenly cooled.
Before dating Mr Sable, Fennell was married to private equity banker Tom Fennell, who lives very close to the crash site where she was arrested.

Sandwich thrower who hurled sub at feds during DC crime crackdown is charged with FELONY by Jeanine Pirro

A man accused of chucking a sandwich at a federal agent in DC has been hit with a felony as the White House vows to 'restore law and order' in the nation's capital. Sean Charles Dunn, who was filmed as he allegedly berated and attacked an officer with his Subway order on August 11. No-nonsense US Attorney Jeanine Pirro tore into the suspect in a fiery video shared on Tuesday, denouncing crime and letting culprits know their reign of terror is over. 'He thought it was funny,' Pirro said of Dunn. 'Well, he doesn't think it's funny today cause we charged him with a felony - assault on a police officer. In the jaw-dropping video obtained by a bystander, Dunn was allegedly heard screaming at a group of US Border Patrol agents, calling them 'f*cking fascists.' After several moments of going ballistic from across the road, the culprit approaches the agents and gets in the face of Agent Gregory Lairmore. The sandwich hurler then took his footlong and forcefully threw at the officer's chest before attempting to sprint away. But his getaway was a failure, and he was arrested and processed at the Metropolitan Police Department's Third District. He allegedly told an officer: 'I did it. I threw a sandwich.'

Chilling new claim about what happened before alleged beheading horror in Melbourne: 'That's what spun me out'

Friends of a couple killed in a horrific double murder say the male victim may have been involved in a dispute with the alleged killer over the sale and ownership of dogs. Ross Judd, 34, is alleged to have killed pregnant woman Athena Georgopoulos, 39, and decapitated her partner Andrew Gunn, 50, before putting the father-to-be's head on a spike. Their bodies were found by a neighbour at a residence on Adrienne Crescent in Mount Waverley, Melbourne about 9.55pm on Monday. Judd was arrested at Westall train station in the city's south-east about 1.40am on Tuesday. Just a few hours earlier, shortly after 11pm, diners claimed to have seen a man matching his description walk into a McDonald's on Dandenong Rd in Clayton with two large German shepherds, who waited patiently at the door. It has now been suggested Judd and Mr Gunn may have entered a dispute over the ownership and sale of some dogs at the time of the murder. Friends of Mr Gunn told the Herald Sun he was often seen with his beloved German shepherd, Dragon. Elise Browne said Dragon was 'very protective' of Mr Gunn, adding: 'Morph was always with his dog.' 'That's what spun me out when I heard about (the deaths), because he and his dog went everywhere together and Dragon wouldn't let anyone near him,' she said. Pictures shared of Judd's dogs and their distinctives scarves at McDonald's prompted some people to comment they had seen the well-behaved dogs and the man around the area previously. A neighbour of the couple, who claimed to have heard arguing and barking dogs on the night of the alleged murders, spoke out on Wednesday. 'No one should have to come across what I saw down there,' said Ben Scott-Sandvik, who lives at the front unit in Mount Waverley block where the alleged double-murders took place. He told the Herald Sun 'nobody needs to live knowing that this sort of thing has happened to their families'. Judd appeared at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, winking after he tripped as he walked to the dock. He then smiled throughout the brief filing hearing over the two counts of murder. The prosecution asked the court for a ten-week extension because 'it's a complex crime scene with significant amounts of DNA evidence'. The prosecutor also said autopsies were expected to be delayed, as alleged murder victim Athena Georgopoulos, 39, was five months pregnant when she died. Daily Mail has previously revealed Ms Georgopoulos was set to face a plea hearing at Ringwood Magistrates' Court on September 1 for car theft and burglary charges. The alleged killer's legal aid lawyer did not oppose the unusually lengthy period to serve the brief, but told the court it was her client's first time in custody. Judd also faces charges regarding previous allegations of making threats, the Daily Mail can also reveal. The lawyer also said Judd needed to see the custody nurse for 'follow-up medication and physical health issues'. Ms Georgopoulos was allegedly killed alongside Mr Gunn in what police believe was a targeted attack at their Mount Waverley home, in Melbourne's south-east. On Wednesday, her mother Petty Georgopoulos paid tribute to her daughter in a heartbreaking post on social media. 'My little heart, you left life so unfairly that I still cannot believe it,' she said in the touching Facebook post. 'In recent days you were so happy - we made dreams together for our little granddaughter that you were going to bring into your life. 'And suddenly, everything was erased in one night, when an [alleged] murderer cut the thread of your life and of my little granddaughter's life that you were going to bring into the world in four months. 'No matter how much they separated us, I will never stop loving you. Forever. Until we meet again, my little girl, in the light of the angels.' Ms Georgopoulos worked as a customer service representative for several electricity and insurance companies, and had been Mr Gunn's partner for three years. The couple were found dead after police received calls from neighbours on Monday night about yelling coming from the property, and heavily armed police swarmed the Adrienne Crescent home at 9.55pm. Inside the small unit, officers allegedly found Mr Gunn's mutilated body next to the body of Ms Georgopoulos. Judd was arrested with two large dogs just hours later at nearby Westall Railway Station, about 6km from the crime scene, at around 1.40am on Tuesday. Police allege Judd was known to the couple and that one of the victims lived in the unit, but they are still trying to establish the connection and alleged motive.

Man who stepped in front of train with toddler jailed for ten years

A suicidal man who attempted to murder a two-year-old boy by walking in front of a train while carrying the child has been jailed for ten years. Frederick Danquah, 28, stepped in front of a train after being told that his former partner had entered into a new relationship. Both the child, who cannot be named for legal reasons, and Danquah were injured in the incident at Garrowhill railway station in Glasgow's east end in July 2023. Garrowhill railway station, in Glasgow, where the incident took place two years ago Danquah denied attempted murder and another charge of culpable and reckless conduct, regarding another incident on the same date, stating his mental condition as a defence, but he was convicted by a jury at the High Court in Glasgow last month. At the same court on Wednesday, the judge said the 'harm was of the greatest kind' and sentenced Danquah to ten years in prison. He also imposed a non-harassment order until the child is 18. The court heard that earlier that day, Danquah had tried to climb over a footbridge above the M8 in Glasgow with the child on his shoulders, after arguing with his former partner who told him she had 'moved on'. After posting a suicidal message on Facebook, he prepared a 'contingency plan' including a note with contact details, the court heard. Danquah collected the child from relatives and took him into Glasgow city centre and met his sister's partner, before he attempted to climb the bridge over the M8. He was spotted by police but 'reassured them', the court heard, before he travelled to Garrowhill station with the child and made an attempt on their lives. British Transport Police said Danquah sustained a broken jaw and fracture to his neck, while the child suffered cuts and bruises but no serious injuries, and the child was discharged from hospital two days later. Danquah sustained a broken jaw and fracture to his neck but the child escaped serious injury BRITISH TRANSPORT POLICE Sentencing, Judge Tony Kelly said: 'You went to the platform, picked up [the child] and walked into the path of a train. You suffered injuries and [the child] was injured. 'To seek to take the life … over some hours is great criminality. I have no doubt about your intentions. You were intent on taking your own life on July 2, 2023.' He said a train driver 'saw you step in the path of a train' and people involved in the rescue were in 'various stages of upset'. The court heard that Danquah had no previous convictions and was involved in a Ghanaian community group. Danquah made further suicide attempts, including in December 2023, the court heard. Gary Allan, for the defence, said it was a 'horrible miracle' and Danquah was receiving psychiatric help since a 'one-off horror story took place at his own hand'. Allan said Danquah had been 'beaten up by other prisoners', and jail 'will be a living nightmare for him'.
