Malaysia ready to lead partnerships to address supply chain disruptions: Tengku Zafrul

KLANG: Malaysia is ready to foster and lead regional partnerships to tackle the challenges posed by supply chain disruptions stemming from geopolitical tensions, said Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz.
Malaysia recently concluded the Asean-GCC-China Summit, which highlighted Asean's unity and ability to address global challenges effectively, Tengku Zafrul said.
"This summit sent a clear message to the world: Asean is open for business, and we are ready to lead in building a more resilient and interconnected global economy," he said at the groundbreaking ceremony of YCH Group's Supply Chain City Malaysia (SCC MY) today.
He added that Asean, guided by Malaysia's leadership, is ready to tackle critical issues including supply chain disruptions, digital transformation and climate change.
"We are working closely with our Asean partners to implement the Asean Comprehensive Recovery Framework (ACRF), which aims to ensure a robust and sustainable recovery from the economic impacts of recent global crises.
"One of our key priorities is to enhance the Asean Single Window (ASW), a digital platform that streamlines trade processes across member states," he added.
Tengku Zafrul said by reducing bureaucracy and enhancing trade efficiency, the ASW will be instrumental in reinforcing regional supply chains and increasing intra-Asean trade, which presently makes up nearly 25 per cent of total Asean trade.
He added that Malaysia is leading the development of the Asean Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA), aimed at harmonising digital trade regulations and encouraging cross-border e-commerce.
"This initiative will not only enhance digital connectivity but also create new opportunities for businesses and consumers across the region," Tengku Zafrul said.
Singapore-based YCH held a groundbreaking ceremony today for its largest supply chain facility in Bandar Bukit Raja, Selangor.
Situated within Sime Darby Property Bhd's Bukit Raja township, the RM500 million project demonstrates YCH's strong long-term commitment to advancing Malaysia's role in regional supply chain development.

Saudi Arabia invites Malaysia to collaborate on Riyadh Expo 2030

OSAKA: Malaysia has received an offer from the Saudi Arabian government to assist in organising Riyadh Expo 2030, says Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. The Deputy Prime Minister said the offer was made by Saudi Arabia's Ambassador to Japan Dr Ghazi Faisal Binzagr during a visit to the Saudi Arabia Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka. "This is a significant opportunity for Malaysia to strengthen ties with Saudi Arabia and demonstrate its standing on the world stage. "I will discuss with the Cabinet to explore the areas in which we can collaborate with them," he said after a dinner with Malaysian diaspora and students here Sunday (June 1). Also present were Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu; Deputy Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Liew Chin Tong; Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and Malaysian Ambassador to Japan Datuk Shahril Effendi Abd Ghany. Fadillah explained that Malaysia has been invited to participate in the preparatory work, including technical and infrastructure aspects. He said Shahril Effendi will hold discussions with Binzagr soon on the matter. Fadillah is in Osaka to open the Malaysia Pavilion at Expo 2025 on Saturday. During his three-day visit, Fadillah emphasised the importance of long-term strategic partnerships between Malaysia and Japan, while highlighting new areas of cooperation aligned with regional sustainability, innovation and integration. According to him, Malaysia's participation in the expo also aligns with its role as Chair of Asean, positioning the Malaysia Pavilion as a key hub for regional engagement throughout the six-month global event. Fadillah's visit underscores Malaysia's commitment to strengthening mutually beneficial relations with Japan and the global community, particularly in sectors that drive resilience, innovation and shared prosperity. - Bernama

Myanmar junta extends ceasefire again after quake

YANGON: Myanmar's junta has extended a post-earthquake truce, after the expiry of a previous humanitarian ceasefire it was accused of flouting with a continued campaign of air strikes. The junta initially declared a truce in the many-sided civil war after a huge quake in late March killed nearly 3,800 people and left tens of thousands homeless. The truce has been extended before, although conflict monitors say fighting has continued, including regular air strikes. A statement from the junta information team on Saturday said there would be an extension of the armistice – which expired May 31 – until June 30. This would "facilitate rehabilitation and reconstruction activities in earthquake-affected areas", it said in the statement. It added that the state was "intensively engaging in reconstruction of damaged government offices and departments, public residences and transport facilities." The ceasefire would also allow the country to hold "a free and fair multi-party democracy general election", according to the statement. The country's junta chief said earlier this year that a long-promised election will be held by January, the first in the war-torn nation since the military staged a coup in 2021. In the statement, the military also warned it would still strike back against any offensives by the array of ethnic armed groups and anti-coup fighters. The announcement comes after Malaysian foreign minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan used a regional meeting last week to call for the extension and expansion of a ceasefire "beyond the currently affected zones." Malaysia currently holds the rotating chairmanship of the 10-country Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean). The bloc has led so far fruitless diplomatic efforts to end Myanmar's conflict since the junta deposed civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021.--AFP

Umno legal bureau examining anti-party hopping laws in Zafrul's case, says Azalina

PETALING JAYA: Umno's legal bureau is checking if anti-party hopping laws apply to Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, says Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said. "Umno's legal bureau has been asked to study the implications of anti-party hopping laws – including the position of senator – to ensure that the next course of action complies with the legal framework. "Each minister is appointed as a representative of their respective party. Umno remains committed towards serving the nation in the unity government setting and will continue to fulfil the people's mandate," said the Umno information chief on Sunday(June 1). Azalina, who is also a Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), said she and Umno respect the Investment, Trade and Industry Minister's decision but stressed that Cabinet positions are given based on party mandate and not in a personal capacity. Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani and Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan had said that Tengku Zafrul was not bound by anti-party hopping laws because he is not an elected representative. Bernama reported Mohamad as saying that the pledge signed by Tengku Zafrul as a Barisan Nasional candidate in the 15th General Election could not be enforced as well because he did not win the seat he contested. "That (the pledge) is not included within the scope of the agreement because Tengku Zafrul did not win the election. That is a pledge made by an elected representative, a state assemblyman or a Member of Parliament. "If they win, the seat belongs to the party, not the individual. If the candidate wins, they sign many agreements, including reimbursing costs incurred by the party. "Tengku Zafrul did not win. He became a minister on the basis of being a senator," he told reporters after a luncheon on Saturday (May 31).
