2026 Toyota RAV4: Rugged exterior teased just ahead of launch
We're just a day-and-a-half from the launch of the sixth-generation Toyota RAV4, and the automaker has provided some extra photos showing parts of the all-new mid-size SUV's exterior.
As we saw in an
earlier leak from China
, as well as last week's
interior teaser
, the new RAV4 is a gentle evolution of today's model that leans further into the its off-road capabilities, such as they are.
Like the current model, which was Toyota Australia's best-seller last year, the new RAV4 is full of edges and creases. If anything, the next generation seems even blockier and sharper-edged than before.

In lieu of a traditional upper grille there's now a black plastic strip joining the car's crab claw headlights. Below is a T-shaped lower grille with honeycomb inserts, and large gloss black side air intakes. A less overtly off-road oriented design was seen in the leak from China, and could be used on different model grades.
Along the side there are squared off wheel-arches with black or grey plastic protectors. The car pictured in the snow seems to be a US Adventure-spec model with chunky all-terrain tyres, and gloss black everything.
At the rear there's a full-width black strip housing a segmented tail-light display, underneath which is a thin area for the indicators and reversing lights. In the centre there's a tiny Toyota logo, similar to the one seen on the recently unveiled
bZ4X Touring
, with larger RAV4 text underneath.
Some variants, like the red car above, will also feature a large spoiler that protrudes out from the rear windscreen.
Last week Toyota revealed parts of the new RAV4's dashboard and centre tunnel. Like the exterior, it's chunkier than the current car's.
There's a binnacle-free digital instrument cluster and a steering wheel with squared-off spokes. The centre stack flows directly into the centre tunnel, which dispenses with a traditional gear shifter in favour of a tiny flick switch.
Following on from the
Camry
template, Toyota isn't messing too much with what's proven to be a very successful formula.
Up until the end of April, the RAV4 (17,610) is leading the Australian sales race, just ahead of the
Ford Ranger
(17,257) and
Toyota HiLux
(15,120).
In the US, the RAV4 has usurped the Camry to become the country's leading passenger car. According to
Good Car Bad Car
, after the first quarter of 2025 the RAV4 (115,402) currently sits in third spot behind the
Ford F-Series
(190,389) and
Chevrolet Silverado
(129,714).
The sixth-generation RAV4 will be unveiled on May 21 at 11:00am AEST.

Volkswagen Group's first Australian EV hatch says adios for now
The Cupra Born is no longer on the company's Australian website, and Volkswagen Australia has confirmed the electric hatch is no longer on sale in Australia now that local stocks of the car have run dry. That said, the Born may not be away for too long. In March this year, Cupra said it was pushing back the launch the Born VZ hot hatch from May to December 2025. A Cupra spokesperson told CarExpert, 'Planning for the next evolution of the Born – including the performance VZ — continues'. Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. Supplied Credit: CarExpert With the Born gone from the local range, Cupra's only pure electric offering right now is the Tavascan SUV. The Born made its global debut in 2021, and was launched in Australia at the end of 2022. While the Born is available in Europe with a variety of motor and battery options, local models all come equipped with a 77kWh battery and a 170kW motor driving rear wheels. A 240kW/545Nm motor drives the rear wheels in the Born VZ currently sold in Europe. Under the skin, the Born uses the Volkswagen Group's MEB all-electric architecture, which underpins all of the automaker's EVs apart from a few models from Audi and Porsche. The Born's closest relation is the Volkswagen ID.3. Both cars share drivetrains, overall silhouette, much of their underlying structure, and doors. Supplied Credit: CarExpert From its launch in December 2022 to the end of May 2025, 1654 Borns have been sold in Australia. The Born's best performance was in 2023, its first full year on sale, when 887 found new homes. For this calendar year until the end of May, the Born (301) is Cupra's second-best selling model behind the Formentor SUV (686). In the broader EV context, the Born is well behind the market leaders: Tesla Model Y (6974), Model 3 (2583), and Kia EV5 (2212). But if we look at just electric hatchbacks, its performance isn't too bad. It's behind the MG 4 (2017), BYD Dolphin (776), and Hyundai Ioniq 5 (364), but ahead of the Kia EV6 (228), GWM Ora (271), Renault Megane E-Tech (138), and Nissan Leaf (62). We know this list includes an eclectic range of models across a variety of sizes and price points, some of which are marketed as SUVs, but pinning down price points can a little tricky as EV pricing tends to move around quite a bit. Priced at $59,990 before on-road costs since its local launch, the Born had been available for the last few months for $47,090 drive-away. MORE: Everything Cupra Born

No Kia Sportage PHEV for Australia, at least for now
The facelifted Kia Sportage range won't be joined by a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) option to compete with Mitsubishi and an increasing number of Chinese brands, as well as the next-generation Toyota RAV4, says the brand's local product boss. Speaking with CarExpert at the Australian media launch of the upgraded mid-size SUV, Kia Australia general manager for product Roland Rivero said the Sportage PHEV hasn't been engineered for right-hand drive. 'As much as we'd love to throw [a PHEV] into say, a Sportage, we couldn't justify the business case from a volume and business case perspective [for RHD], and therefore this generation won't see a plug-in hybrid variant in Australia,' Mr Rivero said. Supplied Credit: CarExpert Supplied Credit: CarExpert Above: 2026 Kia Sportage facelift – Australian market For now, Kia's local division is 'expanding' its PHEV portfolio with additional variants of the larger Sorento PHEV beyond the current GT-Line flagship. However, it remains unclear how many new PHEV variants of the large SUV are coming. Like the Sorento PHEV, the Sportage PHEV is powered by a familiar 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine combined with an electric motor and lithium-ion battery back. Total system output is rated at 200kW for the facelifted model in North America, and while electric range hasn't been confirmed for the new version, the pre-update model in the US quoted around 50km of EV range from a 13.8kWh battery. Note that we've used the North American Sportage PHEV as a reference since it's the longer-body model similar to the vehicle sold in the Australian and Korean markets, as opposed to the shorter Slovakian-built version sold in Europe and the UK. Interestingly, the long-body Sportage PHEV is built in Korea for the US, despite Kia America producing petrol variants in Georgia. The Sportage PHEV also isn't sold in Korea, despite its local assembly. Supplied Credit: CarExpert Above: 2026 Kia Sportage facelift – Australian market An increasing number of mid-size SUV rivals are adding PHEV options, led by Chinese brands and Mitsubishi. The popular Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid EV was once a lone wolf in this space, but is now competing with everything from the BYD Sealion 6 and Mazda CX-60 to the Cupra Formentor and Jaecoo J7. Chery will soon launch a Tiggo 7 Pro 'SHS' PHEV, and Toyota has confirmed the next-generation RAV4 Hybrid will be joined by a PHEV version in 2026. Leapmotor also has the C10 REEV (Range Extended Electric Vehicle) in this space. PHEV sales continue to grow in Australia, outpacing those of all other powertrain types – albeit off a lower base. To May this year, 19,393 PHEVs have been registered – 208.1 per cent more than in the same January-May period in 2024. MORE: Everything Kia Sportage
