West Bengal Police on Saturday lathi-charged protesters in central Kolkata during the 'Nabanna Chalo Abhiyan' march toward the state secretariat, held to demand justice for the junior doctor raped and killed at R G Kar Medical College Hospital on August 9, 2024.
The parents of the victim also participated in the 'Nabanna Abhiyan' rally.
Father of the RG Kar rape and murder victim said, 'The high court has given us permission to stage protests peacefully…Police used a lathi charge on us, that's why we got injured…On 9 August 2024, the police treated us very badly…We were allowed to see the body only after having a telephonic conversation with Mamata Banerjee. We had to stand out for 3 hours and 30 minutes…'

West Bengal Police has heightened the security in Howrah by deploying additional forces and riot control vehicles.
BJP leader Ashok Dinda, at the 'Nabanna Abhiyan' rally, said, '… That day is not far when we will have to beat up the police as well. They will be thoroughly thrashed. Once the BJP gives instructions from the top, we will beat up the police so much that they will have to hide behind Mamata Banerjee…'
A year after the RG Kar student's rape and murder in West Bengal, the students and Bharatiya Janata Party leaders hold a 'Nabanna Chalo Abhiyan' protest march on Saturday, demanding justice for the victim.
Earlier in a post on X, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said, 'On the anniversary of that cursed day when the young female doctor 'Abhaya', on duty at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, was raped and murdered, I offer my respectful tribute in memory of sister 'Abhaya' and pray for the peace of her soul. In response to the call of sister 'Abhaya's' parents, and in protest against the despicable attempt to cover up that horrific incident through collective administrative efforts, as well as the conspiracy to conceal evidence with the intent to shield the culprits, I will participate in the 'Nabanna Abhijan' today in the hope of justice.'
The RG Kar Medical College rape and murder incident occurred on August 9, 2024, when a 31-year-old female postgraduate trainee doctor was found dead in a seminar room on campus.
The case led to widespread protests and outrage across the country, with many demanding justice for the victim.
The investigation was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after the Calcutta High Court expressed dissatisfaction with the police's handling of the case. The CBI has since arrested several individuals.
On Wednesday, the father of the victim expressed disappointment with the CBI and Kolkata Police over the investigation.

He said, 'We have come to Delhi with hope. It has been a year now, and we have been roaming around for justice. We will try to put pressure on CBI. We will try to meet the CBI Director tomorrow. If we meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah, then he can persuade the CBI to do the task more efficiently. CBI and Kolkata Police have given the wrong perspective to the people. Our fight is to provide a safe environment for women in society. In the last year, CBI could not bring out any facts.'
He further alleged that such cases frequently occur in colleges in the state, as earlier, a similar incident had taken place in a law college.

Gujarat Confidential: Late Arrival Raises Eyebrows

As the Tiranga Yatra was flagged off in the presence of Minister of State for Home, Harsh Sanghavi, at Vadodara's Navlakhi grounds on Monday morning, Mayor Pinky Soni remained conspicuous by her absence even as elected representatives of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as well as members of the party's city unit were present at the venue. Soni later joined the yatra at Rajmahal Road, walking alongside Sanghavi until the end of the march at Gandhi Nagar Gruh. While the BJP decided to downplay the 'late arrival' of the Mayor, sources within the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) said that Soni's absence from the main flag-off 'could not be ignored' as some members of the elected wing of the VMC had 'raised objection' to the order in which their names were printed in the list of dignitaries on the invites issued last week by the civic body for the event.

Rahul Gandhi's 'Vote Chori' Campaign: Predictable Playbook, Says BJP As Oppn Finds Common Cause

Last Updated: A top BJP source said Gandhi's real aim is not to prove his claims by judicial scrutiny but undermine public trust in institutions Rahul Gandhi has found a new political war cry in 'Vote Chori', but for the BJP, it is the same, painfully predictable political playbook that does not find any fault in his party's election wins in Karnataka or Telangana, but blames it on 'fraud' when the party crashes in Maharashtra or Haryana. For BJP, Gandhi's rhetoric is merely a media campaign with no legal recourse towards courts. A top party source said Gandhi's real aim is to not prove his claims by judicial scrutiny but undermine public trust in institutions. The SIR protest march in Parliament on Monday served another purpose for Gandhi—him bringing together the INDIA bloc for the first time on an issue after the Lok Sabha elections. Gandhi led the march with SP's Akhilesh Yadav, DMK's Kanimozhi, TMC MPs, RJD and the Left in tow. After over a year, the Opposition is finally uniting for a common cause. But, apart from that, Gandhi's strategy fails to look within, say top BJP sources. Like the party's inconsistent organisation or dwindling political cadre footprint across the country that had led to election setbacks. Or the party's weak leadership. The approach towards ECI, instead, gives a new insurance to the party's future losses—that it is just not our fault. Another top BJP source points to other gross inconsistencies in Gandhi's claims. One, narrow wins being termed by him as instances of election fraud. According to the source, narrow wins are part of India's electoral history and there have been two instances of politicians winning by just one vote and umpteen examples of margins below a 1,000 votes or lesser. Phased polling in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls was also nothing out of the ordinary when it comes to Indian elections, the second BJP source mentioned above said. Congress also banks on exit polls to say the real results are quite the opposite (like in Haryana) and hence, cries fraud. But BJP points out how exit polls have been consistently proven wrong. It is also a fact that India's electorate is growing like its population. A 4.4 per cent voter growth in Maharashtra in 2024, which Congress has cited as suspicious, in fact was lower than under UPA in 2004 when it stood at 4.7 per cent, the first BJP source said. In 2024, Karnataka's voter rolls were managed under a Congress state government, which now cries fraud. The top BJP sources, in fact, point to duplicate voters in Congress bastions in Karnataka and claim that BJP has been at the receiving end of such a phenomenon in Malegaon Central, Kerala, Wayanad, Rae Bareli, as well as Diamond Harbour. BJP sources say it was the Bihar SIR exercise which eliminated 'electoral fraud' carrying on in the state for years. Gandhi may not be able to prove his claims of 'vote chori', but for now, his campaign is proving to be the glue for the Opposition which sees the impending cross-country SIR as a 'common enemy". BJP hopes the Bihar result will prove to be the perfect answer to Gandhi's narrative, as the LoP moves from EVMs to 'Vote Chori', hoping desperately that something sticks. Delhi High Court Orders Retrial In 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots Case

New Delhi: While dealing with five petitions connected to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots' case, initiated suo moto, the Delhi High Court on Monday highlighted lacunae in the investigation as well as in the conduct of the trial of three cases. The High Court has directed the trial court to reconstruct the records of three cases. "Efforts are required to be made on a best endeavour basis to secure such records from any sources to enable this court to finally adjudicate the present Criminal Revision Petitions," the High Court said. The trial court had acquitted all accused persons in 1986. These cases are connected with the anti sikh riots that took place in Raj Nagar area of Delhi Cantt in November 1984. These five cases came into light during an appeal of the CBI against the acquittal of former MP Sajjan Kumar in another case of Raj Nagar. The Division bench of Justices Subramonium Prasad and Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar highlighted, "Material on record further prima facie reveals several lacunae in the investigation as also the conduct of trials." "A prima facie reading of the Judgment passed by the Trial Court indicates that the Judgments are not well considered," the bench said in the judgment passed on August 11. The bench pointed out, "However, this court is not inclined to make any further comments on the tenability of the impugned Judgments at this juncture without having the benefit of perusing the records of the Sessions Cases." The High Court has directed the trial court to make efforts to construct the records of those cases. "Since the entire records are not available and without lacks vital documents, such as witnesses depositions, documents presented before the Learned Additional Sessions Judges and statements recorded under Section 161 of the CrPC, it would be impossible for this Court to proceed with further consideration of the present cases," the bench said. While dealing with these petitions, the High Court expressed its concerns for those killed 1984 violence. The High Court noted that several crucial witnesses were not examined. "Valuable lives were lost in the incidents which form the subject matter of the present cases. Several crucial witnesses, including eyewitnesses were not examined in Sessions Cases 31 and 32 of 1986 due to insufficient efforts to serve summons at addresses damaged or abandoned by witnesses in the aftermath of the incident," the bench noted in its judgements. The High Court also pointed a finger at the manner in which the investigation was carried out by the investigation agency. It also emphasised the need to look into the matters. It said, "A composite challan has been filed for several cases, prima facie reflecting a perfunctory investigation. Therefore, this court thinks that the matter cannot be left to rest at this juncture." "The valuable rights of victims and the society at large to a free and fair investigation as well as a real trial cannot be allowed to be compromised as a result of 'fait accompli" (an accomplished fact), the High Court said. It also said that it is inclined to follow the course as suggested by the top court in Abhai Raj Singh. It has directed the jurisdictional trial court for reconstruction of the records of Sessions Case 10 of 1986, Sessions Case 31 of 1986 86 and Sessions Case 32/86. The High Court said in the judgement that Several Commissions had been constituted to look into various aspects of the Sikh riots in 1984. The court also referred to the CBI probe into the murders of five Sikh persons, namely Kehar Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Raghuvinder Singh, Narender Pal Singh and Kuldeep Singh, leading to the conviction of six accused persons named in that case. Appeals are pending before the Supreme Court in this case. The high court further said that it is hopeful that records of Sessions Case 10/86, Sessions Case 31/86 and Sessions Case 32/86 may be available with the CBI, having been taken into consideration by it during the course of investigation. The high court also said that the records of these three cases may also be available as part of the Trial Court Record in the said appeals, which may be available with the Registry of the top court, having been collected during investigation by the CBI. Such records may also be available in the archives of the various Committees and commissions appointed from time to time, the high court said. The high court has listed the matter for further hearing on September 1.
