A guest on BBC's Antiques Roadshow was left speechless, when what was believed to be a piece of costume jewellery turned out to be a rare and valuable emerald ring, fetching far more than anticipated.
The stunning revelation unfolded in an episode that first aired in October 2022 and was rebroadcast on Sunday (June 15).
Filmed at Nottingham's historic Wollaton Hall, the episode featured an array of fascinating items, including Jack Nicholson's Batman mask, poignant poetry, and personal effects brought over by Ugandan Asians fleeing their country in 1972.
Yet, it was the jewellery appraisal by expert John Benjamin that truly astonished one family. Two cousins brought forward a collection of family heirlooms that had been passed down through the generations.
Their eclectic mix included a gold novelty pencil, a brooch with a fly perched on a flower, and the green stone ring that was the subject of much surprise, reports the Express.

The guests shared that many of the pieces came from their great-great-great grandmother, born in 1858, with one particularly interesting item being a pencil shaped like a mountaineer's ice pick, engraved with the names of French mountains.
"One assumes that the person who owned this originally was a mountaineer who went on this pioneering expedition," John explained. "And he climbed all these mountains and thought, right, when I get back to London, I'm going to commission a company - Hunt and Roskell - to make a gold novelty pencil fashioned as an ice pick."
He traced the origins of this distinctive item back to 1879 and estimated its value to be in the range of £1,500 to £2,000. Benjamin was equally captivated by the next article, a Victorian brooch featuring a fly perched on a blossom.
"You can see it's a fly and a flower that looks to me a little bit like, I don't know, it could be a crocus," he commented. The brooch, which was embellished with malachite, jaspers, and lapis lazuli, struck him as "really unusual".

He assigned a date of circa 1845 to the piece and valued it between £1,200 and £1,500. Yet, it was the last object - a green stone ring - that delivered the most astonishing revelation; a piece the family had long dismissed as mere costume jewellery.
Passed down from their great-great aunt and presented to the guest's mother as a birthday gift, one family member speculated when asked about its authenticity: "Um, I think so. Yeah. It doesn't have a lot of weight in it."
In an unanticipated twist, John announced: "It's an emerald! It is a splendid Colombian emerald. From South America, surrounded by old Victorian white brilliant-cut diamonds, set in 18 karat gold, crafted around approximately 1875 to 1880."
The ring was valuated at an impressive £4,000, hiking the overall projected auction worth of the collection to £7,000.
The revelation literally caused the guest's jaw to drop, as the prospective auction value was placed between £5,000 and £10,000. Overwhelmed with joy, the guest exclaimed: "Oh my God. Thank you. Thank you. I'm going to tell Granny now. She'll be eating her words."
Antiques Roadshow can be viewed on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Radio 2's Scott Mills reveals secret Liam Gallagher feud as he says Oasis star called him a 'c**t' - but he hopes they can reconcile

Scott Mills has revealed how he has secretly been feuding with Liam Gallagher for years - although he hopes they can reconcile. The BBC Radio 2 DJ came clean about his relationship with the Oasis frontman in his memoir, Love You Bye. Scott, 51, revealed he had a falling out with Liam in the late Nineties, when he felt the full force of Liam's wrath whilst backstage at Top Of The Pops. With the Gallagher brothers going on tour in two weeks, it doesn't look like they'll be invited for an interview on Radio 2. Writing in his memoir, Scott shared: 'I'd met them before and chatted to them briefly, so I thought that might be a bit of an in. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'They were absolutely huge at the time and renowned for being outspoken. Their radio plugger took me over to Liam and said, "You remember Scott, don't you? You've met him before." Liam looked me up and down and went, "Yeah, he's a c**t."' Speaking about the situation today, Scott told The Sun: 'I think he's completely changed. I actually think I am completely changed, but I think he's probably a nicer man now. 'In the Nineties, it was the thing to be mean. All pop stars now are pretty nice. When I joined Radio 1 in '98, a lot were horrible as that was the thing to do. It doesn't happen any more.' The iconic Manchester band are set to reunite in July for their first tour in 16 years, dubbed Oasis Live '25, after finally burying the hatchet last year. The band have been busy rehearsing the past few days and frontman Liam said it's a shame they've missed out on so much because he feuded with his brother Noel as he hailed their practice sessions as 'spiritual'. Oasis split following a backstage disagreement between the Gallagher brothers at the Rock en Seine festival in Paris in 2009. Their return to the stage has been one of the most anticipated music events over the past decade and rehearsals are now well and truly underway. A new book titled Live Forever by John Robb has detailed just how bitter the bands split was at the time. However, fans and friends are hoping that nothing happens on tour, like the row they had backstage in 2009, which took them more than a decade to move on from. One witness said: 'Liam was goading Noel constantly and then the two snapped.' Another witness remembered: 'There were proper punches and Liam smashed up one of Noel's guitars. Liam was like a man possessed. They continued: 'He was swearing constantly and really angry. Medical staff were called along with security. Noel got out as quickly as he could. This was a truly vicious fight - quite horrible.' In his statement confirming he had quit the band at the time, Noel wrote: 'The level of verbal and violent intimidation towards me, my family, friends and comrades has become intolerable.'

Meghan Markle honours Harry in heartfelt Father's Day message

Meghan Markle has shared a heartfelt message on social media to mark Father's Day. Shortly before midnight Meghan shared a video on Instagram showing Harry alongside Archie and Lilibet, set to the song Have It All by Jason Mraz with the caption: "The best. Happy Father's Day to our favorite guy." The compilation showed photos and videos of Harry laughing, dancing and spending quality time with his children through the years. The new Father's Day post comes as Meghan has been sharing more and more of her life at home with Harry and their two children on social media. Just last week, she shared an intimate video of the family celebrating Princess Lilibet's fourth birthday at Disneyland. The post on Instagram showed the family enjoying rides at the California attraction, drawing comparisons with Harry's childhood trip to Florida's Walt Disney World with Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1993. The montage also features a clip of Archie, six, and Lili meeting Disney princess Elsa, from the film Frozen. Meghan wears a Minnie Mouse hat in some of the snaps featured in the video, while another image shows a two-tier Little Mermaid-themed birthday cake for Lili. It came just days after posted a video of herself twerking in a bid to bring on labour while pregnant with Lilibet. In the clip, a heavily pregnant Meghan is shown dancing in a hospital room to the Starrkeisha song Baby Momma, alongside the Duke of Sussex. She posted on her Instagram to celebrate Lili's fourth birthday last week, writing: 'Four years ago today, this also happened. 'Both of our children were a week past their due dates… so when spicy food, all that walking, and acupuncture didn't work – there was only one thing left to do!' The candid video, which runs for more than a minute, also features Harry, who is seen dancing in and out of the frame. He is beckoned in by Meghan as the pair dance together, with the duke appearing at the end with the hood of his grey hoodie up as he continues his dance moves. Meghan is wearing a black maternity dress and cradles her large bump as she dances, as well as lifting her skirt above her knees, raising her hands in the air and wiggling low with her hands on her hips and legs. The release of the footage is one of the more unusual ways a member of the royal family has marked a royal birthday. Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond previously told the Mirror: "I suppose Meghan is showing the children more on Instagram because she knows there is a public appetite for photos of them. But she's being very coy about allowing us to see what they really look like. "That's fair enough, if she wants to protect their privacy - though you could certainly argue that there's a very fine line between using them to publicise her Instagram account and her determination to keep their family life private. "With both children at school, she and Harry will obviously have a bit more time to pursue their various activities. Meghan seems to be ramping up her projects more and more, but I think they will both continue to put their family first - just like William and Catherine. And there's nothing wrong with that if you are lucky enough to be able to do so." Be first to get the biggest royal bombshells and exclusives to your phone by joining our .
