Phoenix Suns trading 7-footer Jusuf Nurkic after short-lived run: Sources
The Phoenix Suns are trading Jusuf Nurkic to Charlotte to end a tumultuous, short-lived run, sources confirmed Thursday afternoon with the Arizona Republic right before Thursday's NBA trade deadline.
ESPN's Shams Charania reported late Thursday morning the Suns are trading Nurkic and a 2026 first-round pick to the Charlotte Hornets for 6-6 forward Cody Martin, 6-3 guard Vasilije Micic and a 2026 second-round pick.
run that began with landing him in a three-team deal that sent Deandre Ayton to Portland and Damian Lillard to Milwaukee right before training camp of the 2023-24 season.
The Suns have been trying to deal Nurkic for weeks, but were having a tough time having a team take on his four-year, $70-million contract that's in its third year.
The deal comes as Thursday's 1 p.m. (MST) trade deadline nears.
Nurkic came into this season optimistic about being more involved under new head coach Mike Budenholzer after playing for Frank Vogel last season. Dropping weight in the offseason, Nurkic looked to attempt more 3s, but he started the season 1-of-11 from deep. Add his struggles to finish around the basket and being a liability at times on defense, Nurkic fell out of the starting lineup starting Jan. 6 at Philadelphia. Mason Plumlee became the starter.
Budenholzer later didn't play him in two games before Nurkic missed four games with the flu.
The Suns traded Josh Okogie and three second-round picks to Charlotte for 7-footer Nick Richards and a second-round selection. Richards became the starting center in his second game with the Suns after posting 21 points and 11 rebounds in his Suns debut on Jan. 18 at Detroit.

Suns May Make Major Decision on Devin Booker This Offseason
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Phoenix Suns are among the handful of teams expected to make a significant roster moves. The Suns are coming off a season in which they failed to meet expectations, resulting in a disappointing season for Phoenix. However, the Suns are hoping that their future is bright. Phoenix hired its 23rd head coach in franchise history, Jordan Ott. Ott will try to lead Phoenix back to the heights they reached during the 2020-21 season, but it may take some time. The Suns are expected to make some huge moves this summer, but one of those may not include their superstar guard Devin Booker. According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Suns are expected to make a seismic contract offer to Booker this summer. Photo byREPORT: The Suns are expected to offer Devin Booker a 2-year, $150M extension, per @TheSteinLine. ( — Legion Hoops (@LegionHoops) June 8, 2025 The future of Booker in Phoenix was a bit unclear, but it appears that the Suns will do all they can to keep him in the Valley of the Sun for the foreseeable future. Booker becomes eligible for a two-year, $150 million extension on July 6, and all signs point to the 28-year-old locking in that massive deal once the window opens. Booker is coming off a season in which he was healthy and played like his All-Star self. In 75 games, the former Kentucky Wildcat averaged 25.3 points per game, 7.1 assists, 4.1 rebounds and 0.9 steals while shooting 46.1 percent from the field and 33.2 percent from beyond the arc. It's clear Phoenix still values Booker as a centerpiece, and they'll have the chance to show it in just a few weeks. This massive extension wouldn't just keep him under contract through the 2029-30 season — it would further cement his legacy as a Suns icon and long-term franchise pillar. Will Kevin Durant Remain in Phoenix? While this is good news for the Suns, it could spell trouble for Kevin Durant's time in Phoenix. The expectation for Durant and the Suns is that he will be traded as the offseason looms. Not only is Booker younger, but he is their first great, home-grown Sun in a long time. That is not the case with Durant, and that may be one of the many reasons why the front office will be willing to trade him this summer. Even at 36 years old, Durant will demand a massive package in return that the Suns could and should benefit from. Booker has played all 10 seasons with the Suns. In his career, he averages 24.4 points per game, 5.2 assists and 4.0 rebounds in 673 games. Chris Paul's Latest Comments Could Indicate He Wants to Return to Clippers
Chris Paul's Latest Comments Could Indicate He Wants to Return to Clippers originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Los Angeles Clippers are expected to be in the market for multiple guards to join their rotation for the 2025-26 offseason. Advertisement They need somebody they can reliably start alongside James Harden and also need some depth in the backcourt after being thin across their roster this past season. While it still isn't clear who the answer will be to join their starting lineup, there could be a very familiar face interested in being that depth option for them. Former Los Angeles Clippers guard Chris PaulKelvin Kuo-Imagn Images During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Chris Paul was asked about how he's going about making a decision on his NBA future. Paul told McAfee that the conversation is with his family more than anything and he wants to "be dad". Despite Paul having spent the recent seasons of his career with the Suns, Warriors, and Spurs, his family still lives in Los Angeles. Advertisement That could mean he would be interested in returning to the Clippers, who he previously spent six seasons with as a part of their "Lob City" squads. During that time, Paul averaged 18.8 points, 9.8 assists, and 2.2 steals per game. He earned All-Defensive honors in each of those six seasons, five All-Star spots, All-NBA honors five times, and finished third in the MVP voting once. One big caveat here is that there is also another relevant team in LA and Paul tried to join them before heading to the Clippers. However, the most of the Lakers' point guard minutes go to Luka Doncic and they already have Gabe Vincent coming off the bench. He's a better fit for the Clippers right now and if he wants to return to LA to finish his career, they'd probably be happy to have him back on the roster.
