Phoenix Suns trading 7-footer Jusuf Nurkic after short-lived run: Sources
The Phoenix Suns are trading Jusuf Nurkic to Charlotte to end a tumultuous, short-lived run, sources confirmed Thursday afternoon with the Arizona Republic right before Thursday's NBA trade deadline.
ESPN's Shams Charania reported late Thursday morning the Suns are trading Nurkic and a 2026 first-round pick to the Charlotte Hornets for 6-6 forward Cody Martin, 6-3 guard Vasilije Micic and a 2026 second-round pick.
run that began with landing him in a three-team deal that sent Deandre Ayton to Portland and Damian Lillard to Milwaukee right before training camp of the 2023-24 season.
The Suns have been trying to deal Nurkic for weeks, but were having a tough time having a team take on his four-year, $70-million contract that's in its third year.
The deal comes as Thursday's 1 p.m. (MST) trade deadline nears.
Nurkic came into this season optimistic about being more involved under new head coach Mike Budenholzer after playing for Frank Vogel last season. Dropping weight in the offseason, Nurkic looked to attempt more 3s, but he started the season 1-of-11 from deep. Add his struggles to finish around the basket and being a liability at times on defense, Nurkic fell out of the starting lineup starting Jan. 6 at Philadelphia. Mason Plumlee became the starter.
Budenholzer later didn't play him in two games before Nurkic missed four games with the flu.
The Suns traded Josh Okogie and three second-round picks to Charlotte for 7-footer Nick Richards and a second-round selection. Richards became the starting center in his second game with the Suns after posting 21 points and 11 rebounds in his Suns debut on Jan. 18 at Detroit.

Blockbuster NBA Trade Idea Has 76ers Land $220 Million Superstar for Paul George
Blockbuster NBA Trade Idea Has 76ers Land $220 Million Superstar for Paul George originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Paul George's first season with the Philadelphia 76ers didn't turn out the way the franchise thought it would. Due to injuries to George, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, the Sixers missed the playoffs. The outcome was far from being title contenders, the reason why the star forward joined the organization. Advertisement On the bright side, Philly secured the No. 3 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. They could either use it to draft a promising prospect or put it in a trade package and acquire another All-Star player. There have been speculations on what the Sixers should do with the draft pick. If the team decides to strike a deal with another franchise and trade the pick, Bleacher Report's Andy Bailey has a suggestion. Philadelphia 76ers forward Paul George controls the ball against Phoenix Suns forward Ryan Streicher-Imagn Images According to Bailey's trade proposal, the Sixers could consider making a deal with the Phoenix Suns. Using the No. 3 pick, packaged with George and a few other future draft picks, they could convince the Western Conference team to trade All-Star guard Devin Booker. Advertisement "Adding that pick to two more firsts and a far-future pick swap would give the Suns a good batch of draft assets to tip off a rebuild. And trading George somewhere down the line for more assets wouldn't be out of the question either," Bailey wrote. With Booker, the 76ers are secure over the next three seasons. The former Kentucky guard has three years left in his four-year, $220 million contract. Also, the Sixers could be a better team for the 6-foot-6 guard, since they are aiming to contend for the title. It will also be an easier situation for Philly to dump George's four-year, $212 million maximum contract. The veteran forward will be 36 years old by the time he finishes the third year of his deal. Additionally, the nine-time All-Star's recent injury woes won't be helpful for the Sixers in the future. Bill Simmons Has Suns, Spurs Kevin Durant Hypothesis Before NBA Offseason
Bill Simmons Has Suns, Spurs Kevin Durant Hypothesis Before NBA Offseason originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As the NBA Finals continue between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacers, the rest of the league is preparing for a pivotal offseason. Advertisement Among those teams are the Phoenix Suns who are expected to make some major changes to their roster after finishing 11th in the Western Conference and missing the playoffs for the first time since the 2019-20 season. Of course, many expect the Suns to move on from both Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal this offseason as they try to rebuild their roster around Devin Booker. Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant (35)Kirby Lee-Imagn Images Because of this, Durant is now one of the headliners entering the offseason as it appears likely that the future Hall of Famer will be on the move. There have been many teams linked to a potential Durant trade including the Houston Rockets, New York Knicks and Minnesota Timberwolves but recent reports have made the San Antonio Spurs one of the favorites to land him. Advertisement Due to this, Bill Simmons made a clear hypothesis on Monday regarding a potential trade between the Spurs and Suns for Durant. 'I wouldn't be surprised if KD to the Spurs is done already… like they've agreed on the specifics and they'll just announce it the week of the draft,' Simmons said on his podcast on Monday. This is a bold take by Simmons, especially with the number of teams interested in Durant, but it is not entirely out of the question. There have been multiple reports about the Spurs and Durant having mutual interest as well as San Antonio looking to make a major move this offseason to pair another star next to Victory Wembanyama, despite landing De'Aaron Fox at the trade deadline. Advertisement Either way, it looks as though Durant's time in Phoenix is quickly coming to an end as it is likely a trade gets done before the NBA Draft. Bill Simmons thinks a Kevin Durant blockbuster trade could be ‘done already'
Could Kevin Durant's next basketball home already be a done deal? Bill Simmons thinks so. 'I wouldn't be surprised if KD to the Spurs is done already and they just haven't announced it,' Simmons said on Monday's episode of his self-titled podcast. 'Like they've agreed on the specifics and they'll just announce it the week of the draft.' 4 Bill Simmons believes that a Kevin Durant trade could already be a done deal. The Bill Simmons Podcast While Simmons said he doesn't have any real 'inside info,' Durant and the Suns have been working together to find a landing spot for next season — and the Spurs have been one of the teams atop the list of those interested. San Antonio has also been rumored to be pursuing Giannis Antetokounmpo, though the soon-to-be 37-year-old Durant entering the final year of his contract would certainly be a less steep price for the Spurs to pay in a trade. 4 Kevin Durant is more than likely heading out of Phoenix this offseason. Rick Scuteri-Imagn Images 'It goes back to the Giannis thing, I think they're just gonna trade for KD,' Simmons added. 'It'll cost a lot less, they'll be able to be really competitive, go a couple rounds in the playoffs but they're also gonna keep the No. 2 pick and do it that way.' The Spurs' top assets in a trade (aside from the untouchable Victor Wembanyama) would widely be considered to be this 2024-25 Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle and the No. 2 overall draft pick — which is likely to be Rutgers guard Dylan Harper. 4 Victor Wembanyama missed most of last season with a blood clot. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post San Antonio also owns the No. 14 pick and plenty of other young pieces. While trading for Antetokounmpo would mean certainly parting ways with most of the assets the Spurs own aside from Wembanyama, acquiring Durant could look like a package of Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson and the 14th pick. Durant is entering the final year of his contract and will make about $55 million this season. With his age and no guarantee of him re-signing, a Vassell/Johnson/No. 14 deal could very well do the trick. The Washington D.C. native played his college basketball at Texas — so a move to San Antonio would be a bit of a reunion. 4 Keldon Johnson, Stephon Castle and Devin Vassell could all be potential targets for teams trading with the Spurs. NBAE via Getty Images If the Spurs are truly set to land Durant, they'd be pairing him with an already strong core of Wembanyama, Castle, De'Aaron Fox and (likely) Harper. The Rockets and Timberwolves are the other main teams to keep an eye out for in the Durant sweepstakes.
