Matthew Goode says he didn't get a James Bond audition for this ‘dark' reason

New York Post27-06-2025
Matthew Goode knows exactly why he isn't a Martini-sipping 007.
The English actor, 47, recently revealed he didn't land the role of James Bond – much less receive an audition.
'I didn't audition. I went in and met Barbara [Broccoli],' Goode said while on Thursday's episode of the 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast.

Broccoli, 65, along with her brother Michael G. Wilson, 83, were the producers of the Bond franchise before they relinquished creative control of the films to Amazon MGM Studios for a reported $1 billion in February.
'I didn't get to the audition,' Goode explained, 'but it was quite a funny one because — and she's gorgeous and just a lovely, lovely person — she was like, 'So what's your idea for Bond?' And I was like, 'My idea for Bond. We've gotta take it back to the books, you know? Really, we absolutely have to make this guy an alcoholic, a drug addict. He hates himself. He hates women. He hates a lot of people. He's in deep pain. He's brilliant at killing people.''

That wasn't the idea Broccoli had in mind.
Goode reflected, 'I think by the end of the interview, she was like, 'Mhmm. Next.' I wanted to make it really dark.'
Looking back, the 'Leap Year' star knew the detail he was missing, adding that what 'I should have said was, 'But also incredibly charming.''

Although, Daniel Craig, who landed the role and portrayed Bond in five films from 2006 to 2021, was a bit darker than his predecessors.
'Ultimately, you know,' Goode stated, 'what they did get was Daniel Craig.'

Meanwhile, Bond was created in 1953 by writer Ian Fleming. The saga launched in 1962 with Sean Connery as Bond in the first film, 'Dr. No.'
Pierce Brosnan brought a debonair 007 to life in four films from 1995 to 2002. Other Bonds have been David Niven, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, and Timothy Dalton.
Rumors have swirled over who would portray the next 007 after Craig had his final adventure in 2021's 'No Time to Die.'

Amazon MGM Studios announced on Wednesday that the next film has found its new director, Denis Villeneuve.
The French-Canadian filmmaker, 57, said in a statement, 'I'm a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he's sacred territory.'
'I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor.'

'James Bond is in the hands of one of today's greatest filmmakers,' Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, added.
Spearheading the franchise is Amy Pascal — who helped bring Craig in as Bond — and David Heyman.
At Cannes in May, Harrison Dickinson addressed rumors that he was in the running to be the new spy.

'Jonathan Bailey is your first choice, so let's go with that,' quipped the star, 29, after the reporter stated Dickinson would be his third pick. 'That sounds like a good idea.'
That same month, Denise Richards, who starred as Dr. Christmas Jones alongside Brosnan, 72, in the 1999 action/thriller 'The World Is Not Enough' threw her idea for Bond into the hat.
'I really don't even know,' the 'Wild Things' vet, 54, exclusively told The Post, before her husband, Aaron Phypers, 52, chimed in, 'I would do it.'

'He would be an amazing Bond,' Richards concurred, to which the wellness coach added, 'I could do it. No problem.'
'I don't even know who is in the mix,' confessed the Bravo star. 'I know they will cast someone amazing.'
In March, Brosnan said it's a 'given' that the next man to suit up must be British. He added that it was also the 'right decision' for the franchise to be given to Amazon.
'It takes great courage for them to let go,' Brosnan expressed to the Telegraph. 'I hope that [Amazon] handles the work and the character with dignity and imagination and respect.'
'In this world that is moving so fast now, at the speed of light, [the takeover] does come with a certain lament,' Brosnan continued. 'I thought it was coming for some time, I guess, but I think it was the right decision for Barbara and Michael.'

Heavy metal legends Megadeth announce final album and farewell tour

Megadeth has announced the band's final album and world tour after entertaining fans for more than 40 years. But as the group says, 'Don't be mad, don't be sad, be happy for us all,' and get ready to rock out with them during their epic sendoff. On Aug. 14, the thrash metal band, founded in 1983 by vocalist and guitarist Dave Mustaine, uploaded a video to its website along with the message 'The End Is Near. It's Crystal Clear. Part of The Master Plan,' confirming that a final album and farewell tour are on the way. Above the video was a preorder countdown clock that will expire in 42 days. The words are lyrics from the 1990 song 'Holy Wars... The Punishment Due.' A quote from Mustaine, the group's only remaining founding member, was also included in the announcement on the website. 'It's our last studio album. We've made a lot of friends over the years and I hope to see all of you on our global farewell tour,' he said. The clip begins with multiple news anchors reporting that the 'end of times' is near. There are then shots of a massive flood, an erupting volcano and the world ablaze as people are seen fleeing cities in ruins. Vic Rattlehead, the band's mascot, appears seated behind a desk with an hourglass and a stack of papers that reads 'Confidential 2026.' 'For over four decades, I've been chained in silence,' the skeletal figure says. 'But the end demands my voice. It is confirmed the next Megadeth studio album will be the last.' He continues, '40 years of metal, forged in steel, ending in fire. And when the new year rises, the global farewell tour. You've heard the warning, now prepare yourselves, Cyber Army. Stay loud, stay tuned and meet me on the front lines.' The clip ends with an illustration of Vic Rattelead, with half his body lit on fire. The group, which currently consists of Mustaine, Teemu Mäntysaari, James Lomenzo and Dirk Verbeuren, did not share more details about the exact release date of the final album or when the tour kicks off. Megadeth fans expressed their mixed feelings in the comments beneath the message, which was also shared on YouTube. 'Megadeth you will always live on in our hearts. Thank you for everything Dave Mustaine,' one said. Another wrote, 'Make it a blast! One of the only bands i own all the albums to.' A third commented, 'It hurts my heart to see THE metal band that has got me into metal leave.' In a lengthier statement from Mustaine posted on the band's website, the 63-year-old frontman explained why now is the right time for the band to say goodbye, even though it will be difficult. 'There's so many musicians that have come to the end of their career, whether accidental or intentional. Most of them don't get to go out on their own terms on top, and that's where I'm at in my life right now,' he said. 'I have traveled the world and have made millions upon millions of fans and the hardest part of all of this is saying goodbye to them.' Mustaine added, 'Don't be mad, don't be sad, be happy for us all, come celebrate with me these next few years.' He celebrated Megadeth's achievements over the last 40 years, praising the band for accomplishing something that had never been done before. 'We started a musical style, we started a revolution, we changed the guitar world and how it's played, and we changed the world,' Mustaine said. 'The bands I played in have influenced the world. I love you all for it. Thank you for everything.'

Jussie Smollett's 2019 Alleged Attack Gets Investigated in Upcoming Netflix Documentary: Watch the Trailer

Netflix has released a trailer for the streaming giant's The Truth About Jussie Smollett? documentary, which is set to uncover all angles of the alleged January 2019 attack against the Empire actor in Chicago. Jussie Smollett has maintained his innocence in the case, as the debate of whether or not the incident was a hoax or a hate crime has continued in the more than six years since the incident. 'We're living in a world where the higher-ups, their main mission, in order to do all of the underhanded things that they're doing, is to distract us with the shiny object.' The doc invites various members of law enforcement, journalists, lawyers and investigators to uncover every angle of the case with one goal in mind: to find the truth about what happened on Jan. 29, 2019. Smollett claimed he was the victim of a hate crime executed by two men who tied a noose around his neck and poured bleach on him while screaming things like 'MAGA' and hurling racial and homophobic slurs at him. 'Some things kind of struck me as a little odd,' said former Chicago Police Department superintendent Eddie Johnson in the trailer. 'We were going through the polar vortex at the time. Who is out in the street with it being cold out there?' Smollett is then shown sitting down for an interview, but the clip ends without revealing what he has to say. The actor was found guilty by a jury in 2021 on five felony counts of disorderly conduct for a false police report. He was sentenced to 150 days in jail but served only six days before being released on bail. Smollett also reached a settlement with the city of Chicago to pay $50,000 to the Building Brighter Futures Center for the Arts in May. His conviction was ultimately overturned by the Illinois Supreme Court in November. Watch The Truth About Jussie Smollett? trailer below. Meghan Markle's Netflix Series Faces Backlash Over Chrissy Teigen Guest Spot

Though the second season of Meghan Markle's lifestyle series doesn't debut until later this month, one of the Duchess of Sussex's upcoming guest stars is already drawing a heated reaction. On Tuesday, Netflix unveiled the Season 2 trailer for 'With Love, Meghan,' which hits the streaming platform Aug. 26. In it, Markle can be seen with a number of celebrity pals, including chef David Chang and 'Queer Eye' fashion expert Tan France. Related: Among those also set to appear on the series is Chrissy Teigen. The model and TV personality, who is married to musician John Legend, can be spotted in the trailer joining Markle for what looks like a crafting session. 'Oh my gosh, I could do this every day,' she proclaims. Related: By Thursday, Teigen's appearance in the 'With Love, Meghan' trailer had been met with a fair amount of backlash online, with some calling Markle's decision to include the 'Cravings' author in her lineup of guests 'despicable' and 'a grotesque miscalculation.' 'Netflix should cancel the episode with Chrissy Teigen as she is the ultimate cyber bully,' one person wrote in the comments on Netflix's official YouTube page. 'Netflix is now promoting a cyber bully.' Wrote Jezebel: 'The purported anti-bullying advocate opened the doors of her rich friend's Montecito mansion to one of the internet's most prolific bullies.' Watch the trailer for Season 2 of 'With Love, Meghan' below. Much of the criticism stems from Teigen's previous online exchanges with fellow model and TV personality Courtney Stodden. In 2021, Stodden ― who is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns ― gave a lengthy interview to The Daily Beast in which they called out Teigen for routinely harassing them on X, then known as Twitter, while they were still a teenager. 'She wouldn't just publicly tweet about wanting me to take 'a dirt nap' but would privately DM me and tell me to kill myself,' Stodden, who was 26 at the time of the interview, told the outlet. 'Things like, 'I can't wait for you to die.'' Shortly after Stodden's interview was published, Teigen issued a lengthy apology. 'I'm mortified and sad at who I used to be. I was an insecure, attention-seeking troll,' she wrote. 'I am ashamed and completely embarrassed at my behavior but that is nothing compared to how I made Courtney feel.' Markle has not yet responded publicly to the criticism. HuffPost has reached out to a representative for Teigen seeking comment, but did not immediately hear back. The trailer for 'With Love, Meghan' was released just days after Netflix announced it had extended its partnership with Markle and her husband, Prince Harry. As some outlets pointed out, however, the new contract wasn't nearly as extensive as the overall deal the Duke and Duchess of Sussex initially struck with the streaming platform in 2020. When the first season of 'With Love, Meghan' premiered earlier this year, reviews were mixed to negative, with some comparing it unfavorably to 'Pamela's Cooking With Love,' a cooking show hosted by actor Pamela Anderson. A particularly stinging review by New York Magazine's Vulture blog suggested the main problem with the series was Markle herself. 'She comes off, in short, like a member of the British royal family: afraid of showing vulnerability, obsessed with appearances, and seeking affirmation from a public she cannot be part of,' the outlet noted. 'Nothing could be weirder or more depressing.'
