KUCHING (Aug 12): A fundraising appeal has been launched to raise RM60,000 to cover the cost of a pacemaker battery replacement that six-year-old Muhammad Faris Habibullah Mohd Abdul Sahat recently underwent due to the urgency of his condition.
Born with a congenital heart condition, Faris has relied on a pacemaker since 2020.
According to CCEP Foundation chief executive officer Yvonne Yee, pacemaker batteries typically last around 10 years, but those used in children tend to deplete more quickly due to their higher activity levels.
In Faris case, she said the battery was already fully depleted and doctors had warned that the pacemaker could stop at any time, putting his life at risk.
Given the critical nature of his condition, the hospital proceeded with the surgery upon receiving a guarantee letter from CCEP. Faris was successfully discharged on Aug 8.
CCEP and the hospital have agreed that payment will be made once the fundraising target is met.
Medical records show Faris has undergone four major surgeries, including repairs for Coarctation of the Aorta (Co-Ao) and Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), as well as pulmonary artery banding and pacemaker implantation.
His father, Mohd Abdul Sahat Bujang, who is from Sadong Jaya, recalled that Faris was only 10 days old when a routine jaundice check led to the discovery of a hole in his heart.
'He was admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for over a month. Doctors recommended a Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) surgery and hoped the hole would close naturally within five months.
However, following a second surgery, Faris developed complete heart block, prompting doctors to implant a pacemaker to regulate his heartbeat.
The device has allowed Faris to live a relatively normal life, just like other children. To ensure it works properly, he must undergo annual check-ups to monitor the battery's condition.
Donations can be made to CCEP Foundation via RHB Bank (Account No: 26219300009342). For enquiries, contact 03-7955 9999 or 010-2798849.
Donors are advised to indicate the patient's name and they may request tax-exempt receipts via https://forms.gle/jtBWVNUgxxWZJgzp6. CCEP Foundation fundraising lead Muhammad Faris Habibullah Mohd Abdul Sahat

307 permanent medical officers deployed to Sabah under e-Placement initiative

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 307 permanent medical officers will be stationed across healthcare facilities in Sabah under Phase One of the e-Placement initiative. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said this move aims to strengthen services and reduce existing workloads. He noted that 10 officers will serve at Duchess of Kent Hospital (HDOK), the main referral hospital for Sabah's east coast. 'HDOK offers 19 in-house specialties and serves Sandakan, Kinabatangan, Beluran, Telupid, and Tongod districts,' he said in a Facebook post. The hospital, with 414 beds, handles high workloads including outpatient care, surgery, emergencies, and maternity services. 'The new staff will improve service quality for the public,' Dzulkefly added. His visit to HDOK also addressed facility upgrades, such as a new block and a larger water tank for uninterrupted operations. In a separate post, Dzulkefly reviewed the Measles-Rubella Immunisation Program at Karamunting Rural Clinic with Sandakan MP Vivian Wong Shir Yee. The program targets over 95% immunisation coverage to achieve herd immunity and stop infection chains. 'Rural clinics like Karamunting are frontline health hubs, providing treatment, immunisation, and health education,' he said. The minister later inspected Kinabatangan Hospital, noting challenges like the lack of isolation rooms and critical equipment. He also inaugurated Ulu Dusun Health Clinic's new building and reviewed Bukit Garam Health Clinic's reconstruction. 'These upgrades improve patient comfort and service capacity for outpatient care and immunisation,' Dzulkefly said. The RM600,000 Ulu Dusun clinic is operational, while the RM1 million Bukit Garam clinic is under construction. – Bernama

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said that of this number, 10 officers will serve at the Duchess of Kent Hospital (HDOK), which is the main referral hospital for the east coast of Sabah, covering the districts of Sandakan, Kinabatangan, Beluran, Telupid, and Tongod. 'HDOK offers 19 in-house specialties and is the heart of health services in these five districts. With 414 beds, HDOK faces a high workload covering outpatient treatment, surgery, emergency cases, and maternity services. 'The arrival of this new staff will help improve the quality of service for the public,' he said in a Facebook post about his working visit to Sabah Tuesday. He added that his visit to HDOK also focused on development issues and the need for facility upgrades, such as the construction of a new block, the temporary relocation of old, at-risk wards, and the addition of a large-capacity water tank to ensure the hospital's operations run smoothly, even during water supply disruptions. In a separate post, Dzulkefly also reviewed the implementation of the Measles-Rubella (MR) Immunisation Program at Karamunting Rural Clinic (KD) alongside Sandakan Member of Parliament Vivian Wong Shir Yee. This effort aims to increase immunisation coverage to over 95 percent to achieve herd immunity and break the chain of infection. 'Rural clinics like KD Karamunting play a crucial role as the frontline of rural health services, not only providing basic treatment but also serving as a key center for immunization, maternal and child care, and community health education,' he said. The Health Minister later reviewed the operations of Kinabatangan Hospital, which is the hub for health services in its area, including the maternal and child health clinic and the dental clinic. Challenges identified during the visit included the lack of a negative-pressure isolation room, limited space for the pharmacy and rehabilitation, and the need for critical equipment like ventilators and baby warmers. In addition, he also inaugurated the new building of the Ulu Dusun Health Clinic in Sandakan and reviewed the progress of the reconstruction of the Bukit Garam Health Clinic (KK) in Kinabatangan under the 12th Malaysia Plan's dilapidated clinic project. 'These new facilities not only provide a more comfortable space for patients but also increase service capacity, including for outpatient treatment, maternal and child care, immunisation, and health promotion,' he said. The upgrade work for KK Ulu Dusun, valued at RM600,000, is complete and operational for the local community, while the reconstruction of KK Bukit Garam, valued at RM1 million, is ongoing and includes the construction of a new building complete with basic and support facilities. – Bernama

New TVET Programme to Boost Career Prospects for PUSPEN Clients

DENGKIL: The Narcotics Addiction Rehabilitation Centres (PUSPEN) will introduce a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) module to improve career opportunities for its clients. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi emphasised the need for updated educational approaches to help clients reintegrate as productive community members. 'As Chairman of the National TVET Council, I will support the National Anti-Drugs Agency and all PUSPEN centres nationwide,' he said during a visit to PUSPEN Dengkil. He added that the new module would ensure clients secure professional employment after completing rehabilitation. Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh and AADK director-general Datuk Ruslin Jusoh were also present at the event. Ahmad Zahid stressed the importance of high-value training to prepare clients for quality jobs matching their chosen courses. For those interested in entrepreneurship, he pledged to collaborate with SME Corp Malaysia and KUSKOP to provide relevant courses. 'Insya Allah, I will also seek allocations to fund these courses,' he said. The government has spent over RM60 billion on drug rehabilitation, prevention, and treatment efforts. 'That's a huge sum — just imagine if it had been used for building schools, hospitals, or sports activities,' he remarked. Ahmad Zahid urged public support for PUSPEN clients in rebuilding family and community ties, viewing the centre as a rehabilitation facility rather than a punitive one. 'We cannot allow them to drift aimlessly. The MADANI government's vision ensures no one is left behind, including PUSPEN clients,' he said. Earlier, he witnessed the handover of the 'Transform GYM' from the Youth and Sports Ministry to the Home Ministry for use by PUSPEN Dengkil clients and staff. The initiative reflects inter-ministerial collaboration in drug rehabilitation and community well-being. – Bernama
