Efforts underway to formally establish Media Council
PUTRAJAYA: Efforts to formally establish the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) are currently underway, with an official announcement expected by the National Journalists Day (HAWANA) 2025 celebration on June 14.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the process will commence once the Malaysian Media Council Bill that was passed by the Dewan Rakyat on Feb 26 and the Dewan Negara on March 19 receives the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's consent and is officially gazetted.
'We expect to begin the process of officially establishing the Malaysian Media Council within the next few weeks, once the bill receives the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and is gazetted.
'It will take some time due to both administrative and financial aspects, which involve waiting for allocations from the Finance Ministry. Insya-Allah, we hope to have good news about the MMC by HAWANA,' he told reporters after the Communications Ministry's monthly assembly here today.
Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching and ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa were also in attendance.
Also present were Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin.
Fahmi previously said the establishment of the MMC, which has been approved by Parliament, is expected to begin functioning by mid-year.
The council will serve as a self-regulatory body to safeguard media freedom and uphold journalistic ethics, while also empowering the media industry in Malaysia.
In his speech earlier, Fahmi said HAWANA 2025 is not just a celebration but a platform to strengthen the media ecosystem and recognise the vital role played by journalists.
'It also aims to reinforce professionalism and responsible freedom of expression among media practitioners. As a curtain-raiser, a pre-launch for HAWANA will take place on June 3 at Wisma Bernama,' he said.
The highlight of HAWANA 2025 will take place on June 14 at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim being the guest of honour. The event is expected to gather around 1,000 journalists from Malaysia and abroad.
Organised by the Communications Ministry with Bernama as the implementing agency, HAWANA 2025 will feature a variety of activities, including a Pesta Pantun on May 31, a pre-launch event with strategic partners at Wisma Bernama on June 3, and a media forum jointly hosted with the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) on June 14.

In a statement posted on his social media, Fahmi recounted arriving at KLIA2 at around 7.30am to catch a 9.35am flight for a short two-day trip to attend a concert featuring South Korean band Slant and Singaporean act Sial. 'I was asked to wait while they checked with TCO (Travel Control Office/Order). Then they took my passport and IC for photocopying. They also wanted printed copies of my boarding pass and e-ticket, even though I had them on my phone,' he wrote, adding that with only 10 minutes left before boarding, an airport staff member helped him get the documents printed at a hotel nearby. When he returned to Immigration with the documents, Fahmi said an officer told him, 'Bukit Aman has not given clearance for you to leave the country.' He said no explanation was provided and he was escorted out of the departure area. He believes the ban is linked to his artwork criticising the recent appointment of former Sabah chief minister Tun Musa Aman as the state's new Yang di-Pertua Negeri. Just weeks earlier, on May 29, the Sabah Immigration Department had denied Fahmi entry into the state under Section 65(1)(a) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. He said he was flown back to Kuala Lumpur the same day without further explanation. That incident followed his earlier arrest by Sabah police in February this year over another satirical post. Authorities had opened investigations under the Sedition Act for allegedly insulting the royal institution. 'Last week I was blacklisted from entering Sabah. This week, I'm blacklisted from leaving the country,' he wrote. In conjunction with National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) 2025, Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) journalist Marfika Adnan Haris Fadzilah, 34, shared her experience participating in the 2024 China International Media Exchange Programme, organised by the China International Press Communication Centre in Beijing. Marfika, a journalist with Bernama's Lifestyle Desk, said that during her four-month stint in China, she saw how deeply AI was woven into daily life and how it proved useful to her as well. 'AI became a part of my daily routine in China, not just as a work tool, but as a personal assistant that just made life easier,' she said. Among the AI applications she found indispensable were Baidu Translate and WeChat Translate, which let her instantly convert Chinese documents into Malay or English using just her phone. She acknowledged that she relied heavily on ChatGPT throughout her four-month assignment, using it to craft interview questions, write photo captions and translate Chinese texts into Malay or English. Reflecting on the challenges she faced in China, Marfika said the language barrier was the most difficult, as most locals had limited proficiency in English.

MCMC keeping a close watch on online e-cigarette sales
PUTRAJAYA: The sale of e-cigarette products, including vapes, on social media platforms is being closely monitored by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil (pic). Fahmi revealed that many of these transactions are occurring on platforms such as Facebook and WhatsApp. 'Through the MCMC, the Communications Ministry is actively monitoring the online sale of e-cigarette products, especially on social media platforms,' he said during a post-Cabinet press conference yesterday. 'God willing, the MCMC will prepare a report which my ministry will present to the Cabinet for further discussion,' he said when asked whether the Federal Government intends to ban the sale of e-cigarettes, including vapes. As for a review of existing laws governing the sale of such products, Fahmi said: 'This matter comes under the Health Ministry, but from the Communications Ministry's perspective, MCMC continues to monitor the situation online.' Several states, including Johor, Kelantan and Terengganu, have already banned the sale of e-cigarettes. Meanwhile, Fahmi confirmed that neither the position of Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz in the Cabinet nor Umno's request to retain all seven of its ministerial posts was discussed in the Cabinet meeting. Tengku Zafrul recently submitted his resignation from Umno and expressed his intention to join PKR. Following Tengku Zafrul's departure, Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the party is requesting to retain its seven Cabinet positions, as Umno would otherwise be left with only six ministers. On another matter, Fahmi said the proposed move to make it mandatory for parents to monitor their children's online activity under the Online Safety Act will be further detailed by a dedicated committee. He said the formation of the Online Safety Committee, under the purview of the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, is a key step in enforcing the legislation. 'It will play a crucial role in determining what constitutes 'online harm' and how it should be addressed under the law,' he said. On June 2, Azalina had said the government was reviewing existing legal provisions to introduce clearer responsibilities for parents and guardians to prevent child abuse and neglect.
