Broncos legend Lionel Taylor dies at 89
Via Chris Tomasson of the Denver Gazette, Taylor died on August 6. He would have turned 90 on Friday, August 15.
Taylor joined the Bears as an undrafted free agent in 1959. He played linebacker in Chicago.
In 1960, he joined the Broncos in the first year of the AFL, switching to receiver.
He caught 92 passes in 12 games during the AFL's first season, and 100 in 14 games during the 1961 campaign.
Taylor played for the Broncos through 1966. He finished his career with the Oilers, in 1967 and 1968.
He caught 567 passes for 7,195 yards and 45 touchdowns.
Following retirement, Taylor worked as receivers coach with the Steelers from 1970 through 1976, winning a pair of Super Bowls. He served as receivers coach for the Rams from 1977 through 1979, adding the title of offensive coordinator in 1980 and 1981.
Taylor coached at the college level from 1982 through 1988. He coached the Browns' tight ends in 1990.
Five years later, Taylor joined the staff of the London Monarchs of NFL Europe. He was promoted to head coach in 1998.
Taylor is a member of the Broncos' Ring of Fame.

Sure, we realize some of these theories come from the national media as well, but fortunately, Hurts "had a purpose before anyone had an opinion". Yes... Take that, haters! All the while, he remains humble while 'keeping the main thing the main thing'. This is a guy who was chosen by the greatest NBA player of all time, Michael Jordan, to be the NFL's ambassador of one of the world's top athletic brands. Most guys would do anything to play at one of college football's most iconic programs. Jalen Hurts has played for two of them. Kudos to this guy for remaining level-headed. We've never been part of a Super Bowl-winning roster, but we imagine it's pretty cool. On whether that has led to a confidence boost, Hurts offered the following response. Hurts may sound like someone with 40 years of life experiences to share, but he is still 27 years old. Think about that for a second. His story is still being written. The session marks the third consecutive year Arizona has scheduled joint work ahead of a preseason road game. Terrell Davis likes 'significant upgrade' Broncos made at running back
Denver Broncos legend Terrell Davis knows a thing or two about toting the football; he earned a gold jacket from it. And he's excited about the Broncos' 2025 running back room. "I like it so far," said Davis, who spoke with Broncos Wire at Bank of America's 'Golf With Us' event on Monday. "J.K. Dobbins -- watching him last year and then knowing what he brings -- he's a physical running back; he's a guy that breaks a lot of tackles, gets a lot of yards after contact. So bringing him into the fold was, already in my opinion, an upgrade. "Then you go in and you draft (RJ) Harvey. The potential that he has, he reminds me a little of Darren Sproles; everybody says that, but he's kind of a scatback or you can use him not only in the backfield, but anytime you have a back that has flexibility, you could put them out and run routes, that's a win." Davis went on to say that the 2025 running backs remind him of what head coach Sean Payton did in New Orleans. "We're kind of seeing this team in the image of Sean Payton; and you can look back at Darren Sproles, think back to Reggie Bush, think back to Mark Ingram," said Davis. "You kind of see that starting to re-emerge, or at least the characteristics of those kind of backs. Again, the proof is in the pudding, but I'm pretty bullish on this backfield and I think what it did too was not only bringing those guys (Dobbins and Harvey), just even watching the preseason game. "I know it's a small sample size, but I just felt the energy was different from that room. You see guys now trying to break tackles, trying to get extra yards which we didn't see last year. So pretty encouraged by that, excited to see what happens. I think that room has had a significant upgrade." The Broncos were middle of the pack (16th in the NFL) in rushing yards in 2024, and the team has not had a 100-yard rusher in a game since the 2022 season. If anyone knows what it takes to have success on the ground in the NFL, it's Davis. It's a good sign for Denver's backfield that the Hall of Famer likes what he's seen from the group so far. Davis, who won two Super Bowls in Denver, spoke to Broncos Wire while promoting an initiative to make golf more accessible for kids through Bank of America's "Golf With Us" campaign.
