'Delta flight 446 returned to Los Angeles shortly after departure following an indication of an issue with the aircraft's left engine," a Delta spokesperson told the BBC. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. The aircraft is powered by two General Electric CF6 engines.
Flightradar24 tracking data shows that DL446 climbed out over the Pacific Ocean before turning back inland over the Downey and Paramount areas. This gave the pilots time to complete safety checks and prepare for the emergency landing.

Delta flight aborts takeoff in Mexico as Aeroméxico jet nearly lands on it, shocking video emerges

A Delta flight headed to the US had to abort take-off in Mexico after another plane nearly landed on top of it. Delta Flight 590 was beginning its takeoff roll on Monday at Benito Juárez International Airport in Mexico City when a regional AeroMéxico jet suddenly flew over it and landed directly in front of it, according to Flightradar24 data. CNN reported the two planes came within 200 feet of each other. The Delta pilots stopped the takeoff and returned the plane to the terminal after another plane nearly landed on top of it in Mexico. The flight was going to Atlanta and had around 150 people onboard, according to a New York Post report. The airline said, 'Delta will fully cooperate with authorities as the circumstances around this flight are investigated.' The Delta flight took off again later that day, several hours after the incident. The airline added, 'We appreciate the flight crew's actions to maintain situational awareness and act quickly – part of Delta's extensive training.' Aeromexico issued a statement, where they said, "At Aeromexico, the safety of our customers and employees is, and will always be, our highest priority." Amid probe, 'Aaviation experts say they will consider whether there was a communication failure.' Another Delta Air Lines case In a separate incident, a different Delta flight had to make an emergency landing after a fire broke out in one of it's engine. Delta Flight 446, a Boeing 767-400 bound to Atlanta, returned to the Los Angeles International Airport shortly after take off. No injuries were sustained. Airport fire crews located the aircraft on the runway and quickly extinguished the flames. Live footage of the emergency landing along with fire crew response to the fire in the engine was captured from the YouTube channel "LA Flights". When the Boeing 767-432(ER) landed at LAX, emergency response teams from Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) were already in position. Units 089, 0870, and ARFF2 responded to the scene. Ground crews did a visual inspection of the left engine to make sure the fire was completely out before the aircraft was towed away for a full inspection.

Planes Nearly Collide On Mexico City Runway In Frightening Close Call

Last Updated: Pilots halted Delta flight moments before takeoff in Mexico City as AeroMéxico jet unexpectedly touched down ahead. Two planes almost collided on the runway in Mexico City on Monday when an AeroMéxico regional jet about to land flew over and touched down in front of Delta Air Lines Boeing 737 jet that had begun taking off. The incident happened on the runway of the Aeropuerto Internacional Benito Juárez where Delta Flight 590 was starting to roll down with 144 customers and six crew members on board. The passengers and the crew suddenly spotted another plane land directly in front of it, the airlines said in a statement. Flightradar 24, the flight tracking website, showed in a rendering of the incident via a video shot on aviation radar view. It showed that the AeroMéxico Connect flight 1631, an Embraer 190 regional jet, flew less than 200 feet over the moving Delta plane then landed in front of them on runway 5R. The journey for the Delta passengers commenced three hours later as pilots immediately stopped the takeoff and returned to the terminal following the incident. Delta, in a statement, said that it reported the incident to Mexican aviation authorities, as well as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in the United States. 'Delta will fully cooperate with authorities as the circumstances around this flight are investigated," the airline said in a statement. 'We appreciate the flight crew's actions to maintain situational awareness and act quickly – part of Delta's extensive training." The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) downgraded Mexico's aviation safety rating in May 2021, citing its failure to meet minimum international safety standards. The top-tier Category 1 status was reinstated in September 2023, after the FAA provided technical assistance to help address and resolve the issues that led to the downgrade. Aviation incidents continue to make global headlines, with another close call emerging from US skies. Aviation regulators said Monday they are investigating a near-miss between a Delta flight operated by SkyWest and a US military B-52 bomber over Minot, North Dakota. The commercial pilot was forced to take emergency action, telling passengers, 'This is not normal at all," after spotting the bomber approach from the right. The FAA and SkyWest have launched probes into the July 18 incident. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Major plane tragedy averted! Aeromexico plane nearly lands on Delta Air Lines Boeing 737 flight at Mexico City airport

A major plane tragedy was averted at Mexico City airport, when an Aeromexico plane came dangerously close to a Delta Air Lines Boeing 737 jet during landing, on Wednesday, July 23. Aeromexico Flight 1631 swooped in over Delta Air Lines plane 590— already accelerating on its takeoff roll—before touching down on the very same runway, causing the flights to be just 200 ft away from each other, according to FlightRadar24 – a flight tracking website. The incident occurred on runway 5R at Benito Juarez International Airport. A video footage from the flight tracker shows the exact moment when the two flights narrowly averted what could have been a major tragedy. Delta Air Lines said the Atlanta-bound Boeing 737flight with 150 people onboard was on its takeoff roll when the crew aborted after observing 'another aircraft landing in front of their aircraft on the same runway,' reported ABC News. What pilot recordings revealed? The Delta Air Lines flight in question had already picked up a speed of 60 miles per hour before it's take-off roll was aborted. As per air traffic control recordings accessed by ABC News, the Delta pilot can be heard saying, "We are holding on the runway" followed by someone saying, "Wow" and "Increíble." (Spanish for "incredible.") It is unclear if that was said by a nearby pilot or a controller. The Delta jet returned to its gate before finally departing to its destination later that morning. What caused the close call? A former US-based fighter pilot, Steve Ganyard said that the issued might have happened due to failure in communication. "It seems pretty clear that there was a failure to communicate, either with the tower controllers clearing it to aircraft for takeoff at the same time they cleared one to land, or perhaps they weren't clear with a landing aircraft which runway — left or right — it should have been landing on," said Ganyard. "But somewhere it was a failure to communicate." Investigations into the alarming incident are currently underway. Air India; Bangladesh Air Force jet crash The Delta Air Lines flight and AeroMexico plane incident comes days after the deadly Air India plane crash in Gujarat's Ahmedabad, that killed 241 people onboard — into which investigations are still underway. On Monday, July 21, at least 20 people were killed and 171 others were injured after a Bangladesh Air Force training jet crashed into a school.
