81 iconic heritage sites form backfor International Yoga Day celebrations
Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Union Minister of Culture and Tourism embraced yoga at Mehrangarh Fort in Rajasthan's Jodhpur, while Manohar Lal Khattar, Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, participated at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. Likewise, Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution participated in IYD at Group of Temples at Pattadakal, in Karnataka, while other key dignitaries were spotted performing yoga asanas at various locations across the country.
In fact, as part of the celebrations, several Union Ministers joined yoga sessions at various iconic ASI-protected monuments, reinforcing the significance of yoga as a national movement which was led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Andhra Pradesh's Visakhapatnam, said a statement from the Union Culture Ministry here.
It said that in a nationwide grand celebration of International Day of Yoga, 81 heritage sites under the aegis of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) hosted yoga sessions, organised in collaboration with the Union Ministry of Ayush on the D Day. The entry was free of cost to visitors to encourage their participation.
This year's theme, 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health', aims to promote the importance of holistic health and well-being globally. The celebrations were marked by the participation of people from all walks of life, including students, professionals, and families, all coming together to practice yoga and experience its health benefits.

In a recent development, the Union health secretary wrote to Haryana's chief secretary Anurag Rastogi, asking him to ensure facilities by the Haryana govt at the under-construction AIIMS in Majra, Rewari. The health secretary also highlighted that there is currently no structure for rainwater drainage within the campus. A drain passing through the campus has been identified by the district administration as a route for rainwater drainage from AIIMS. It is essential to prepare a comprehensive plan to prevent waterlogging in the campus area and ensure adequate development of external drainage systems. Referring to the quality of water, sources in Rao Inderjit's office also added that the TDS level in the groundwater at the AIIMS site is found to be 1,800 PPM, which is excessively high and unsuitable for drinking and general use. Apple watch gets redesigned blood oxygen detection tech with pairing system
New Delhi, Aug 16 (UNI) Apple revealed a redesigned feature in its Watch Series 9, Series 10, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 related to blood oxygen detection, as per the company's statement. The official statement on Apple's website said, 'Apple will introduce a redesigned Blood Oxygen feature for some Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 users through an iPhone and Apple Watch software update.' ' Users with these models in the US who currently do not have the Blood Oxygen feature will have access to the redesigned Blood Oxygen feature by updating their paired iPhone to iOS 18.6.1 and their Apple Watch to watchOS 11.6.1,' the official statement added. Moreover, Apple Watch's oxygen monitoring feature was controversial in the past, as a medical technology company named 'Masimo' sued Apple for infringing its patents related to blood-oxygen sensing technology. After that, the US International Trade Commission (ITC) banned the import of certain Apple watches with this blood oxygen monitoring feature in 2023. Now, the tech giant is again coming with the new feature, as the US customs ruling gives a green signal to a redesigned technology that processes raw sensor data on the iPhone instead of the Watch. The official statement on Apple's website also noted the crux of the redesigned feature: ' Following this update, sensor data from the Blood Oxygen app on Apple Watch will be measured and calculated on the paired iPhone, and the results can be viewed in the Respiratory section of the Health App.' ' There will be no impact to Apple Watch units previously purchased that include the original Blood Oxygen feature, nor to Apple Watch units purchased outside of the US,' the statement added. Telangana records over 900% rise in abortions in 5 years, highest among all states
1 2 Hyderabad: Telangana recorded an over 900% rise in abortions (medically terminated pregnancies) over the past five years, shows data tabled in the Rajya Sabha recently. This is the highest increase that any state has witnessed in India during this period — with abortion numbers increasing from 1,578 in 2020-21 to 16,059 in 2024-25. During the intervening years, the count rose from 4,071 in 2022-23 to a staggering 12,365 in 2023-24. The records were presented by Union minister of state for health and family welfare, Anupriya Patel. Doctors from Telangana attributed this sharp rise to a host of reasons ranging from medical conditions, unplanned pregnancies, higher living costs to more women wanting to delay motherhood. There were spontaneous abortions because of genetics, chromosomal and congenital abnormalities — detected in the developing fetus. These natural pregnancy losses represented a significant portion of the overall figures," said Dr VK Sumithra, programme joint director, state's maternal health and nutrition department. She said, in some cases, failure to comply with use of contraceptives — including missing trimesterly injections — led to MTPs. "Economic reasons too are reshaping family planning choices, particularly in urban areas, with couples choosing to delay or limit childbirth," she added. Dr Hem Lata, senior gynaecologist and additional deputy district medical and health officer (DMHO), Hyderabad, reiterated the changing family planning patterns in Telangana. "Till a few years ago, people would undergo family planning operations after having two children, but now they are getting it done after one child only due to high living costs and other expenses," she said, adding, "This shows how economic pressures are driving reproductive decisions. " Improved data collection and increased awareness are also factors that have added to this surge, say doctors. Earlier, many MTP cases went unreported due to lack of streamlined systems. "Now, with the integration of the Health Management Information System (HMIS) reporting mechanisms have significantly improved. This, along with greater awareness around the provisions of the MTP Act, 2017, has led to more accurate and consistent documentation of medical terminations across the state," said Dr Sumithra. "To add to that is the age of abortion being increased from 20 weeks to 24 weeks, and in special circumstances abortion above 24 weeks," she added. Some also pegged it to changing demographic patterns, particularly post Covid-19. "More women are part of the workforce and prioritise career growth, stability, and family planning," said Dr Rupa Banu, a gynaecologist from a private hospital.
