Upcoming summer blood drives in the Southern Tier
SOUTHERN TIER, N.Y. (WETM) — If people around the Southern Tier are looking to support a good cause and potentially save lives, a blood drive on Tuesday in both Elmira and Corning may be a good place to start.
The Red Cross and WETM 'Summer Blood Drive' is set to take place on Tuesday, June 17, from 1:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at two locations in the Southern Tier.
USW Local 1000, located at 100 Nasser Civic Center Plaza in the City of Corning
Clarion Inn Elmira, located at 1760 East Water Street in the City of Elmira

Red Cross calling for more blood donations ahead of slow summer months
PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – The Red Cross is calling for blood donations amid a challenging time of year for the organization. Jonathan McNamara, the communications director for the Red Cross of Virginia, explained that the need for blood is always there, but during the summer months that need becomes even greater. 'There's a shortage of donors and an increase in demand,' McNamara said. He added that it doesn't matter what type of blood you have, you have a chance to make a difference. 'When you're dealing with a situation where it's challenging to collect blood, if you're somebody who's watching this and has an interest in donating blood, your blood type is one that we need,' McNamara said. McNamara revealed that collecting blood becomes challenging for the Red Cross two times a year. It's usually just after the holidays and during the summer. 'Summer travel, people who are now on summer break till colleges and high schools are not able to fill drives on campus. And then just the things that pull all of our attention during the summer months, where we understand blood donation is not top of mind,' McNamara said. Not only can you donate at the Red Cross donation center in Norfolk, but you can also look out for Red Cross local partners out in the community. For example, the Norfolk Sheriff's Office just held a drive on Wednesday and is giving out 15-dollar gift cards until the end of the month for those who donate. 'If there's an area in the community where you're watching this story, chances are there's going to be a blood drive near you,' McNamara said. He added that if you can't donate blood, you can always volunteer. 'Whether you want to help check in people at blood drives, whether you're willing to actually help drive blood to area hospitals, many different opportunities for you to support the Red Cross,' McNamara said. TYLER / WACO, Texas (FOX 44) — There's only a couple of days until your opportunity to save a life with the FOX 44/Carter BloodCare Blood Drive! This event will take place this Friday at FOX 44's parking lot, located at 8803 Woodway Drive. Let's take a look at some of the questions surrounding donating blood. For some, donating blood brings a smile and a sense of satisfaction. 'It's a win-win for the donor and the patient, mainly because you're helping save someone's life,' said Clinton McCoy, Director of Mobile Recruitment & Regional Operations for Carter BloodCare. This doesn't mean there aren't still questions and myths which might hold some people back from donating blood. One of the most common surrounds tattoos. 'One of the big ones is that I have a tattoo – I can't donate blood. That used to be true,' McCoy said. 'It used to be if you got a tattoo there was a risk for hepatitis, infection and things of that nature. The FDA has gone through it. The cleanliness and the testing that we have now is very precise, and there is no deferral for a tattoo as long as you got it in a state licensed facility. So again, the state is licensing you to say that this facility is clean and the risk is low, so it is now considered a low-risk behavior for infectious disease.' McCoy says the biggest barrier involves just saying a few words that few people say. 'Nobody asks,' McCoy stressed. 'That's the number one reason. You ask somebody, 'Why haven't you donated blood?,' and most people will tell you, 'Nobody asked me to.' So that's our job today – to ask people to come out to donate blood.'
